Orange pi PC / Allwinner H3

Orange Pi PC and all other boards containing H3 chip are not supported by Armbian. I can add that this is true for any other distribution. Nevertheless there are few ROMs based on buggy 3.4.39 Android kernel which is not supported by Allwinner nor community.

I recently looked upon the one and only kernel and u-boot source. All I can say is that we need a lot of work & I haven seen much motivation doing this. Not by myself nor others. Factory image build procedure is dirty and with help of some AW binaries. Building really sucks and results are also very poor.

I won't say never but dunno when.

This would be a particularly interesting board because of its price (below tax limits here, making the price that much better).

I'm not surprised if the factory docs and images are useless, though. That kind of boards is where Armbian would really shine :)

I don't have resources to cover nor motivation to invest into clearly deprecated kernel development. The only thing what can be done is to build yet another image with the one and only kernel. With small fixes at most. Not really worth doing it.

You can see how much was done on a new AW generation in about one year to get a better picture of what's going on. New chips are already out, not to mention that there are other vendors out there ...

Hi guys,

the Allwinner H3 boards are cheap but there is lack of support from the manufacturer side. I bought this board on Mar. 23 2015 and I do not see major improvement. They released more linux distro's but everything contain basically same kernel in bad condition. Developing of good kernel should be on shoulders of the manufacturer not community like lot of "east" manufacturers trying to do. Compare to other boards the OrangePi on H3 is wasting of time and I thing everybody can pay $10 more and get lot of time.

The orange pi mini is shown prominently on the downloads page, yet this thread suggests it's not supported.

Nope, Xunlong designed a few A20 boards (Banana Pi, Lamobo R1, Orange Pi and Orange Pi Mini). These are fully supported by Armbian due to its SoC and the state of software support for the SoC.

Then they started with H3 boards that are all more or less the same, the OPi PC being the first interesting one (since the H3 is made for dirt-cheap systems without that much additional components on the PCB and the OPi PC being the 1st such a design -- all other H3 based Orange Pi are bloated with additional components). We won't have Armbian support for H3 designs anytime soon. Unless mainline kernel support for H3 improves it's just a waste of efforts.

In case you own already a H3 board beware that the root cause of all stability issues is most likely not the old Allwinner 3.4.39 kernel used now but insane overvolting/overclocking by the manufacturer (see post #26 here) instead. That also applies to thermal problems, that can be easily fixed the same way.

Trying to follow the news about Mainline Kernel for H3, I've seen a lot activites from MRipard and Hans de Goede recently.

Hoping this will happen soon !

Anybody know in more details what remain to be done ?

You could grab the latest available Jessie image for the Plus (untested since Igor's not in the lab this week) from here http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/617-wip-orange-pi-one-support-for-the-upcoming-orange-pi-one/?p=5476 and if's not already coming up with a desktop then follow the steps outlined in our  documentation to add a normal user and upgrade to a desktop environement:

apt-get -y install xorg lightdm xfce4 tango-icon-theme gnome-icon-theme
reboot

and report then back in the aforementioned thread. Please also have a look in our new H3 Mini FAQ in the meantime. I would also suspect that you have to adjust /boot/boot.cmd so that it reads

setenv bootargs "console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootwait rootfstype=ext4 cgroup-enable=memory swapaccount=1 sunxi_fb_mem_reserve=32 hdmi.audio=EDID:0 panic=10 consoleblank=0 enforcing=0 loglevel=1"

(use mkimage afterwards as outlined in the documentation -- link above)

Smart move since they get superiour software support out of the box since Armbian's H3 image for Orange Pi Plus should work already or just needs minor modifications. But at least they managed to use a crappy DC-IN solution so customers will suffer from problems (the so called 'SinoVoip experience' ;) )

GBit Ethernet using RTL8211, AP6212 for WiFi/BT. Hmm... if they would use a barrel plug for DC-IN (already prepared on the PCB), would drop AP6212 and eMMC and sell this for a competitive price this would be the most interesting H3 board so far for me. Even if one USB host port isn't exposed.
