Thank you very much for the kind and timely response. Guess I'll look into http://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparation/ first. Previously I've had some experiences with cross-compiling kernels and hacking some sunxi-based TV boxes. So I guess I would be able to make my own image. Thanks for explaining the situation and hopefully Armbian will get better and better.

    Regards,

We stop to provide Debian Jessie image because it was a complex job to fix all upstream problems when making a desktop. You can make both Debian versions (Jessie and Stretch) on your own with build tools, but there is no support. Jessie might be broken, while on Stretch there are still some issues to fix - wireless networking is possible broken.

I can make you a Debian Stretch desktop test image with a modern kernel if you don't have gears to do it on your own?

I've been hitting similar issues trying new builds on various boards. I find it much less stressful to just use a USB wifi dongle when doing these kinds of tests. I'm running Armbian with a 4.13 kernel built for the Orange Pi Zero on my NanoPi Duo and with a USB wifi dongle, it works fine:

The Linux build provided by FriendlyElec has a super slow SPI driver, so I went in search of a way to see if it was a hardware or software bug. Running the OPZ build of Armbian on the Duo shows that it's purely a software bug.

Ah, yes, I can see how that happened.  I've always been impressed by the system you guys created.  Not only do you support a kajillion different devices, you have a build ready to use by the time a brand new board has had the time to be delivered to my house.  And even though it was clear that mainline was not supported, I was guilty of coming to the forum to seek solutions for mainline issues.  I'm sorry I contributed to the problem.

I may look into building my own, or at least look into it since I'm interested in learning the process, but I'm mostly thrilled to hear that a mainline kernel release is in the forecast.  One month is not long, and I realize that will probably slip out more than a month, but just knowing that it's coming soon makes me happy.

    Thank you for the explanation.

Nightly builds were removed because people started to use them for real and keep asking why this and that is not working. That is only killing our precious time and doesn't help anything since most of the issues are known and waiting to be fixed. Sometimes it takes months before some issues are resolved.

Mainline kernel for H3/H5/A64 is close to being released but it is not yet fully done and it is not tested. We are about 1 month away from releasing it. What can you do now? Build on your own and be ready for some issues and upgrade to stable later ... or wait.

@TonyMac32 Thanks for looking into this. In the mean time, is there some instruction for me to enable sound over HDMI in the mainline nightly build? I really only need sound in Chromium.

I'm quite impressed by the Armbian. x2goclient runs so much smoother in Armbian than TinkerOS 2.01. I recorded a screencast to show this:

NEXT stable. Made from a recent mainline stable base. We have currently 100+ patches on top and few more are expected to make those little boards usable with a modern kernel. Just hundreds of working hours and we are done

Open hardware won't exists since Bluetooth is a closed protocol. Check download page. On the bottom, there are links to tested equipment.

I just made self-build image with those fixes https://github.com/armbian/build/commit/ad3e331cef5374941c6317412470d5e145607d73 and Bluetooth is up and ready by default with such dongle. Opi PC+ legacy Ubuntu desktop http://sprunge.us/aJAc

Just to be clear, I'm just getting used to the environment I'm not trying to put anything into production. If I break it, I get to keep both pieces.
I am a BIG fan of Armbian and I hope I can at least feedback information.

    Thanks, Steve

We plan to put them into stable repository after in deep testing. https://forum.armbian.com/index.php?/topic/5149-upcoming-release-date-feature-freeze/ Simply contact @Tido to put you on a list and he will note you when we are ready for a final round of testing. ... if you want to help us out and make this happen sooner.

Yes, after almost a year I decided to look again and finally find the answer.
This time I tried with UART4, change the pins and everything as I posted, and then, only one more step was needed to make it work.

first, you have to read the file /boot/dtb/overlay/README.sun7i-a20-overlays
in there you will find all the information about the overlays.

then go to /boot/armbianEvn.txt and put this at the end of the file:

    overlays=uart4
    param_uart4_pins=a

then restart and Bingo!! UART4 now works like a charm!!!

    Hope this helps.

It's not our decision to put this chip on board, we don't sell boards, we only try to make them usable. We already wasted an enormous amount of our extremely scarce time on this piece of crap and got nowhere. We decided to drop support - you can find the reason on this forum if you do some search.

Forget about that there is a WiFi chip on board.

As I already told you - just about any other chip works O.K. also in AP mode. RPi has very similar Wifi chip which you can find in Opi Zero 2+, Neo Air, Banana PRO, ... it works just fine, more than 1mbit at a distance of 10m.

Time from people who are willing to help you might cost way more.
  20. willmore liked a post in a topic by Igor in orange pi zero, upgraded kernel permanently broken wifi

Just about any board has better wireless chip than Orange Pi Zero but don't expect router class experiences on any other since you won't find them. Get something with RT5572, RT3572, RT3070, AR9271, ... first two will go up to 300mbps at 5Ghz, while last two up to 150mbps at 2.4. Access point mode of course.

With something like this: http://www.ebay.de/itm/ALFA-Networks-AWUS052NH-2-4-5-GHz-USB-WLAN-Adapter-300-MBit-Ralink-RT3572- you could have (very good) router class experience. Long range and presumably a lot more clients than on those on board el cheapo wifi chips.

I think all Armbian supported boards that have wifi chip can operate in access point mode. The question is a quality/speed/distance and max. client count. All this is fairly limited.

Stretch is possible, but kernel for this board is not quite ready. We are working round the clock to finish this in planned due in 1-2 months.

    Current status:
HDMI DRM driver, CEC, HDMI audio, I2S (requires overlays)
Missing features: DVFS, THS U-boot is most likely broken

I updated u-boot and now even mPCI works, but not the most interesting one Atheros AC WiFi. I tried few others and updated compatibility list on the download page: https://www.armbian.com/espressobin/ There are also quick instructions with links to u-boot download that one can update his Espresso. It's a progress.

Do we have/know where are temperature readings?
