MechEng87 Posted April 18, 2017 Share Posted April 18, 2017 Hi everyone, I am using an orange pi one to run a table top CNC machine I built and using it to run bCNC to send the g-code to an Arduino. I had downloaded and flashed an image of the Debian Jessie Desktop V5.20 a while ago and it has been working great for other things along the way as well as this project. I had some issues with the bCNC program and decided to uninstall the OS and restart from new. When I did, everything seems normal until I get to the login screen in the terminal area where I have to create a new user account and password and enter my information, then it asks if I want to change the display settings from what I already have which I don't because they are correct. Then, nothing. it jumps down to the next line and is just displaying the command line " xxxx@orangepione~$: . It used to just simply boot the GUI and I would be in the desktop environment after that. I don't understand what is happening, if it's a problem with the install, a problem with writing the desktop image to the SD card, something silly I am doing or not doing.... I have tried 3 different boards including a fresh one out of the package just to see if it was a RAM problem or something. I have tried a different image Debian Jessie 5.25 new SD cards, few power supplies, new HDMI cables, different monitor, different keyboard and mouse. I am at a loss and am asking for some assistance. I am very new to linux so if it's my own ignorance or stupidity that has led me down the path to frustration then I would appreciate a push in the right direction. If there's something I should try next please let me know. I have also tried the "start X" command which doesn't seem to work also the "chvt N" which does not help me either. i dont get why it was working before but doesn't work now, especially on 3 different boards... Igor Posted April 18, 2017 Share Posted April 18, 2017 What about Ubuntu Xenial, which is the only desktop build that we offer for this board at download page? I know you probably want Debian, but we choose to support only Ubuntu version of desktop, since it's troublesome to support both versions and we choose Ubuntu Xenial because it currently use newer package base than Debian Jessie. I assume you use legacy kernel? In case of troubles it's always fine to provide logs (armbianmonitor -u). Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
MechEng87 Posted April 18, 2017 Author Share Posted April 18, 2017 I will try the Ubuntu Xenial, I did not try it yet even though I noticed you had taken Debian Jessie off the orange pi one page for download options I like the Jessie environment and since I also have an Orange PI PC 2 that i was running Ubuntu on and the bCNC program did not work properly, or at all ( granted that's not your problem) I decided to go back to the Debian Jessie that I knew had worked. I would love to provide logs but as I stated I'm pretty new to Linux and don't know much of my way around especially in the command promt. I've typed in "armbianmonitor -u" once it boots up and even tried "sudo armbianmonitor -u" I don't know that it really has given up any information but I have attached a screenshot of that the result was. I should add that I had the ethernet cable unplugged then I plugged it in just in case. Sorry if the picture is crummy hope its legible. All I can add at the moment is that the green light on the board is staying on and after I create the login account and it goes to the "prizig@orangepi~$" the red light starts to blink. Here's what I have done, I have a brand new SD card, I wrote the image of the debian jessie desktop and it did not work so i formatted it and wrote the "Armbian 5.25 Orangeorangepione Ubuntu xenial desktop 3.4.113.zip" unzipped it with 7zip, and used win32 disk imager to do the writing. as soon as I get past the orange pi login screen it still does not start the GUI. I am using a windows machine to do the writing and downloading of the images then putting the SD card into the OP one. It is the image that is on the Orange pi one page on this website. I'm sorry for not knowing anything about needing a working network, I'm plugged into my home's internet via the ethernet cable I assumed that would be able to do it. on a footnote, i think it was just me being impatient with the connection. tried the same command line entry a few minutes later and got the above posted or similar, here it is. /var/log/armhwinfo.log has been uploaded to http://sprunge.CNCUS Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If your SD card is failed which is possible, 2. If you failed to read instructions and break the first login with CTRL-C BTW. You haven't provide a proper link to your logs. I have not done much for trying again today at getting the boards up and running as i am out of ideas. They all used to be working boards and all of the sudden they dropped like flies even using the same image. Thank you again for your support.. Igor Posted April 19, 2017 Share Posted April 19, 2017 Logs are o.k. now and there are no obvious reasons. Does your USB hub has it's own power? If not, disconnect it, find powered one, try boot without ... HDMI is not running if your power supply is degraded. If you power via some USB, than it's normal that you face problems. MechEng87 Posted April 19, 2017 Author Share Posted April 19, 2017 ok, i can admit its could be a power supply issue even though I had an OP PC2 working on the same power supply just fine. I will try a different power supply later in the week as i wont be able to get to it today. i do actually have that exact power supply you posted,just with the american plugs on it but I also have some Samsung fast chargers i can try, or another one that I know does at least 2.5 amps and maintains rail voltage. I disconnected the USB hub and was using one USB dongle at the time for a wireless keyboard with a trackpad for a mouse. it was plugged into ethernet, HDMI power and the one USB dongle. i will try with another power supply soon and let you know. MechEng87 Posted June 1, 2017 Author Share Posted June 1, 2017 Ok, sorry about not posting anything for a while. I did end up getting the ubuntu xenial image working on the orange pi one. I thing it was ultimately a car reader issue, I got a new usb to micro sd adapter and it is now working. I do have a follow up question though and it may be a moot point but the desktop boots up and it seems that it is cut of all four edges of the screen? I'm using a different monitor that I have used before as I was planning on using the OP1 for a different purpose since I got it working. tried changing the resolution from 720p to other things, 1080p, 1080i, 720i, different refresh rates (60hz to 50hz) and it didn't make a difference. Still cut of at the edges. Anything I can do about that or is it possibly a monitor incompitability problem? the monitor I'm using is stated for 720p with HDMI input.
