• Before reporting problems with your board running Armbian, check the following:

    • 1. Check power supply, check SD card and check other people experiences   06/23/17

      Power supply issues are one of the three biggest issues you'll face when starting with Single Board Computers (SBCs). SD card issues, whether fake or faulty, are another and issues resulting from poor board design is the other common issues you can encounter.   Power supply issues can be tricky. You might have a noisy power supply that works with one board because it has extra filtering, but won't work with another. Or you're using that cheap phone charger because your board has a microUSB connector, and it is either erratic, or doesn't start up, or even becomes the cause of some SD card issues.    Some tips to avoid the most common causes of problems reported:   Don't power via micro USB  - unless you have optimised your setup for low power requirements. Micro USB is great for mobile phones because they are simply charging a battery. It's bad for SBCs. Yes, it does work for a lot of people, but it also causes more problems and headaches over time than it is worth, unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you have a barrel jack power connector on your SBC, use it instead! If there is an option for powering via header connections, use that option!
        Don't use mobile phone chargers. They might be convenient and cheap, but this is because they are meant for charging phones, not powering your SBC which has particular power requirements.
        When you are evaluating a power supply, make sure you run some stress tests on your system to ensure that it will not cause issues down the path.   (Micro) SD card issues can be sneaky. They might appear right at the start causing strange boot and login errors, or they might cause problems over time. It is best to run a test on any new SD card you use, to ensure that it really is what it is, and to ensure that isn't faulty. Armbian provides you a simple way to do this   --   armbianmonitor -c /path/to/device/to/test

      We can only help if you provide quality information for us to work with. All stable images from the download section are tested, most stable upgrades are tested and we have tens of thousands of users. Even with regular and extensive testings, bugs sometimes do slip through. This is a voluntary support service and is unrelated to board makers, and is not obligated to provide you any answers. Repeated asking the same questions because you're not happy with the answers will result in you being ignored.

      Before you post a question, use the forum search as someone else might have already had the same problem and resolved it. And make sure you've read the Armbian documentation. If you still haven't found an answer, make sure you include the following in your post:   1. Logs when you can boot the board: armbianmonitor -u (paste URL to your forum post)   2. If your board does not boot, provide a log from serial console or at least make a picture, where it stops.   3. Describe the problem the best you can and provide all necessary info that we can reproduce the problem. We are not clairvoyant or mind readers. Please describe your setup as best as possible so we know what your operating environment is like.     We will not help in cases you are not using stable official Armbian builds, you have a problem with 3rd party hardware or reported problem would not be able to reproduced.

My third Orange Pi Zero came last week, yesterday I plugged it and had heating issues... So I started reading, learning and testing....

 

Setup:

  • OPiZ-1: 256 MB, no SPI flash - Has extension board plugged - for comparison
  • OPiZ-2: 512 MB, with SPI flash
  • OPiZ-3: 256 MB, with SPI flash (new one with problem)

 

Test conditions:

  • All with (newish) Sandisk Ultra 16 GB Class 10
  • All new formatted (SD Formatter) and burned/validated (Etcher v1.0.0) with Armbian_5.25_Orangepizero_Debian_jessie_default_3.4.113.img
  • All on my desk - side by side, ambient temperature 25.0-25.1 C (20 cm from boards, no air flow)
  • No case, no passive/active cooling
  • Power supply 7 port 5V 36W total, 2.4A per port (wait, wait, I tried others, separated etc - I'm testing them with USB V/A/W tester - 5.2-5.3V / 0.260-0.350 A)
  • First install done, rebooted,   apt-get update && apt-get upgrade'd, rebooted, tested

 

The results are given below...

 

I switched (i.e. reformatted/reinstalled) the SD Card of OPiZ-3, no change...

I plugged OPiZ-3 alone, no change...

I used 3 other power sources, no change...

 

Is the new OPiZ-3 a faultly board? What else can I test/check?

Thumb test please: let 'armbianmonitor -m' run, then press your thumb for 15 seconds on H2+ and provide output from OPiZ-1 and OPiZ-3 (for both also 'armbianmonitor -u' output, at least '### cpuinfo' section!)

OK, will do... They are disconnected now...

 

I examined the boards. Old ones are v1.1 the new ones are v1.4... Also the layout (and circuitry) did change !

 

It seems that (if I'm not mistaken) in VCCIO 3.3V/1A circuitry Q11 is gone and there are changes in U55, U7, U4 voltage regulators...

Here are test point voltages in OPiZ-3. USB power meter shows 5.305 on the supply side. 3.3V seems off...

I will try with another supply later...

Hmm... I fail to understand somehow. On OPiZ-3 temperature with thumb pressed on seems to decrease by 5°C from 63°C to 58°C (if it has been +60°C in reality the drop should be larger and it might hurt a bit). And on OPiZ-1 temp decreases from 44°C to 42°C while 'finger burns'?

 

This 'thumb test' is always my first try to detect whether we're looking at numbers without meaning or not (over a year ago we had a situation with A20 boards reporting temperatures even below 0°C at an ambient temperature of ~25°C and when pressing the thumb on A20 temperature further decreased below 0°C which is a clear sign that these numbers are simply way off). So do OPiZ-2 and OPiZ-3 feel any different when you press your thumb on H3 there?

The thumb on #3 belonged to my son :D It also burned, my son could just say "15 Mississippi" before shouting... 

On #1 I used my little finger, there the skin is thinner :P

 

I'll try all 3 later after by burns heal ;)

OPiZ-3 (this time also tried with legacy Ubuntu image with same results): Drops from 65 C (cooling mode) to 58-59 C by 6-7 degrees. I had to cool my thumb by one second and press again, thus the fluctuation.

 

There is definitely something wrong with this board...

I'm a noob on these things but can it be related to voltage regulator changes and Armbian kernel parameters? Should I try to underclock / undervolt etc?

I'm a noob too here (everything hardware related). On the Zero as well as all the other 'smaller' H3/H2+ boards there is just a simple voltage regulation active. With a GPIO switch VDD_CPUX can be adjusted between 1.1V and 1.3V. So all you can do is to try to let the board run all the at the 1.1V setting (which should be the case with cpufreqs below 912 MHz so... 'does not work') and check the voltage on 1V2S testpoint.

Yes, I read a lot about it in these forums, mostly with your input... I already measured the reference voltages and posted above.

It is not the 7 USD I care about but this tiny board seemed to be nice for some applications (with its nice box). If the problem is design related, ordering new ones is not meaningful.

Here is the explanation of the engineer. Active cooling seems to be a must, especially if it is boxed...

That's just weird and the opposite of an explanation. All common OS images for the Zero with default throttling settings will show worse performance and it's easy (for you) to test through. It's just an 'armbianmonitor -p' and then running 'minerd --benchmark' on PCB rev 1.1 and 1.4 to spot the difference.

 

And wrt Wi-Fi: Are you able to test with both PCB revisions in an otherwise identical setup using iperf3 over a clear sight distance of 2 or 3 meters? You need a third host (ideally with Ethernet connected to your router/AP) running 'iperf3 -s' and then you can check from both Zero with 'iperf3 -c $host' (add a '-R' to test the opposite direction too). Yes, that is what I wrote to OPi forums. I think the point they have is "we boosted it, cool it - or underclock it to reverse". The Zero's were already hot and they made them hotter. Not suitable for summer projects :) 

 

I never used WiFi on these boards yet as I read about the performance in your tests.

I'll test them whenever possible with similar setup like your tests. I'm working with OPi One's now and I have to finish them first.

Hi Everyone,

 

I'm attempting to use a bunch of OrangePi Zeros for a low power sensing application.

I have an OrangePi Zero 512M which I started developing on. It works extremely well and with the GPU/ethernet off and CPU/Ram underclocked it operates at about 30-34 degrees C, using only a tiny amount of power.

 

I recently got a bunch of OrangePi Zero 256M models, I've tried three of them now and (either a fresh install of the same version of Armbian or the exact same SD card as the 512M is running on) they all run around 55-60C at idle and overheat/freeze when attempting to install packages or compile.

 

Any ideas? Is there some setting I could have changed that lives on the SoC or flash rather than SD card that accounts for the lower power use?

30-34 degrees C seems surprisingly low to me. My opi zero idles @55-60 degree C (opi zero 512mb, we have summer in europe so my room is around 27-30 C). Do you use the newest Armbian? If I had it right in mind, that before optimization of clock speed was done, armbian on H3 boards had thermal issues (I'm not sure if this was still the case when support for h2+ started - that's before I got in touch with armbian). Maybe thinking about a small heatsink, I ran mine the first couple of days without but hat never problems freezing (never stressed it with more than apt-upgrade during this time).

 

Edit: You can lower the max cpu freq. But it should work with the armbian settings.)

Do you ever thought about alternatives (Maybe C.H.I.P or Omega 2 are better for battery powered IoT devices. This is a little bit out of my knowledge, not sure if these two are good proposals)? From my experience, the opi 0 is a little bit bitchy as soon as it runs into a undervoltage situation. I realized that the SoC (OPi 0, rev. 1.4) gets really hot (finger test) as soon as there's not enough power to start up the board. I'll investigate this as soon as I have more time and my second OPi 0 arrives (I would be annoyed, if I grill the only one which I have at the moment).

Doing some reading, it looks like CHIP just had a very similar issue a little while ago. The alpha version could idle or do a small amount of work at around 80mA, but the newer versions are >200mA.

 

We've started using raspberry pis as they will work on 80-100mA if you turn the ethernet and gpu off.

 

Ideally I'd be using a microcontroller as I'm not actually using the CPU resources (although having heaps of memory is really nice), but my country is about to have no 2G network, and all of the 3G options I have found that do not talk over USB add at least $100 to the unit price.

No idea where you live but could something like an Arduino MKRFOX1200 be something for you (only if you live in europe, south africa or the middle east)? 3G USB sticks are cheap as hell, but as soon as it gets to dev boards the situation becomes shitty (U-Blox dev boards ~100$, module only gets cheaper when you buy more than 10). Maybe hijack of a cheap mobile phone is the easyiest way...

I've recently received my OrangePi Zero v1.4 and have experienced the same heat issue. After some experimentation I noticed that while the chip idles really, really hot (65C or so even with heatsink and thermal paste) when under load it barely budges (rises to about 75-80C a delta of 10-15C), this suggests that the DVFS may be broken on the new  board revision. Maybe with the regulator changes it has affected how you set the resistor network? Just a wild guess. 

 

BTW on mainline kernel it idles around a reasonable 45C or so at room temp.

In the OP armbianmonitor -m output of the v1.4 board (OPiZ-3) states that the frequency on idle is 240 MHz which is very low, and actually not usable for real applications. The FEX file is:

 

LV6_freq = 240000000
LV6_volt = 1100
 

So, do you think one should lower the voltage? We don't have the schematics, so I cannot look at it either.

Can the SoC run under that voltage?

So I've measured the VDD_CPUX rail when idle and I got 1.1V, which is the lowest the "dumb" regulator on the Zero can go. Honestly I'm at a loss as to why it's putting out almost as much heat at 240MHz as at 1200MHz.
