I don't agree with desktop horrible performance. I already use an s912 board as a small dev computer and it's a bit slow because of mali performance with a browser, but otherwise it works well.
rk3399 is better on all point. I just bought a khadas edge-v and I plan to use it instead my s912 box. thanks to JMCC script, I expect enough performance for a smooth desktop usage:
 

I haven't this board, but here is my opinion about your questions:
0) 2G RAM may be enough since zram can increase it and it's activated by default in recent images.
1) I don't see real hardware differences between your current config and the new one, but I can't give you any guarantee it'll work.
2) It mainly depends on your use case and the loads you expect on the board. But it'll be much more powerful than your existing hardwares. I'll recommend the aluminium heatsink to avoid too much throttling.
3) A quick search on google gave me a like to thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3313324, but you have to print it. The main problem is the sata hat, and the way to integrate your external drive.

With this budget, any well supported board with rk3399 and a good sata2usb3 converter will make the job.
The NanoPi M4 with its big heatsink can be nice for less than 72$ without shipping fees. For similar price you've got also the rockpro64.
The Odroid N2 (or Khadas Vim3 launching soon) could be nice also, but amlogic S922x is a recent soc and current boards are not officially supported event if there are good progress.
 
If you absolutely want a sata port, an odroid hc1 is cheap and interesting but there is no hdmi output. For both sata and hdmi, you can look at the Odroid H2 (based on intel J4105) but it's out of stock and you have to add ddr4 ram. The main advantage of this last one, is that you are on an x86 soc, so any "standard" linux distribution may work quite out of the box.

Hi, I also noticed this issue with other debian images since 2 months. You have to edit manually /etc/environment to set you locales and LC_ALL settings.
It seems to be a debian issue, not armbian specific.

You have to run "sudo apt upgrade" and not only update.
If no kernel upgrade is proposed, you may have to download the deb file from Oleg's yandex repository: https://yadi.sk/d/pHxaRAs-tZiei/5.77/deb
But be careful, you may have to check that the new kernel support is as good as your current one. You can try just to burn latest image and if everything works as you expect, you can then come back to your current version and install the deb files.

S905X was released three years ago. The main WiFi is rtl8189. 9082C WiFi is an alternative. Now most S905X/S905W are using SSV6051WiFi.

Since I upgrade frequently, I think there is not too much difference. Armbian tools and firmware are updated as other packages. Of course there should be some specific modifications of Balbes after each update he made.
If 5.41 has mali, it is useless for me since I use my box as a server.

I just made upgrades and got armbian-config 5.64 with an uptime of 70 days.

I saw you tested your Up board based on atom z8300, so I tested my x5 based on z8350: http://ix.io/1lwg
However, I have only manjaro installed on it and cpufreq is not reported, nor the soc temperature, so maybe this numbers are not relevant for you.

In my case I only test successfully debian stretch server image.
 
@Didi, don't forget to use aml_autoscript.zip to update your bootloader (see 1rst post of s905 topic) so that it tries first to boot to sd card. If your dtb file isn't good, you'll not be able to boot even in android if your sdcard is plugged in.

To summarize the discussion because it was difficult for me to follow all the answers. The initial objective was to identify a software to manage and process the documentation:
- current input format is markdown
- 2 output formats are expected: html and pdf

Identified solutions:
- mkdocs seems interesting (simple and configurable) to generate static html pages
- pandoc can generate pdf with toc from many document formats
- github wiki is based on markdown and offers a simple way to generate html doc as we can see with current redirection.

Personnally, I used Sphinx for a previous project to generate from the same input files an html documentation and a pdf report (in fact generate latex and then pdf). The input format is restructured text, but markdown can be easily translated to that close language (e.g. with pandoc) more especially if there are already files for each section of the doc. I'm not sure this is the best solution for current case.

One major issue is to define how people can contribute while keeping documentation structure with valid permalink:
- public wiki solutions don't fit this requirement even if it is easy to rollback when problem occurs.
- pull requests on a git repository for the documentation can be chosen, it requires that admins of this repo validate and integrate contributions, but it may offer more guarantee about structure preservation.

The content of the documentation and its structure should also be addressed, but perhaps in another topic.
