I think I am close but some detail still missing

@locki, can you install WiringOP and attach the output of
gpio readall  ?

For start, you might need to install kernel headers. 
 
armbian-config -> software -> install headers
 
Then try again. Regarding display connection or if the method is proper - no idea.
