  2. Thanks a lot for your ample answers. 

    I must tell you what it the "secret" of my project.

    The task is seemingly simple - streaming video from the camera, but with "real time" control of "sureness" of that video. I mean to deliver a preview from the camera to the end point, shifted in the time as low as possible (<1 sec), with showing that time shift value on-line, and showing other parameters of streamed video, like dropped frames count etc.

    So, I don't want to use streaming applications like gstreamer, v4l2, motion, etc. because of:

    1. (With all due respect to OpenSource) not supported, rarely updated, different behaviour on different devices (sometimes it is a hard way to force application to work at all)

    2. Difficult to achieve control of stream (as I need) - they use to use just web browser to see the movie at the endpoint

     

    So, then, the idea is to make as many pictures as possible and send it immediately to the endpoint, together with some metadata which will give the option to that endpoint to check how the "stream" goes.

     

    I'm a little surprised because I did not know that dedicated camera module (I will use GC2035 because they sell it with OrangePi Lite) does not compress photos. I must say that 25-30 pictures per second would be great for me (the minimum is 10-15), but if I add compressing time (YUV to jpeg) there will be a little more delay added. I am also not sure if cheap usb  webcams, like webcam will give a jpeg pictures, maybe I would need something like Logitech C270 what multiplies costs : -(

     

    I know, that proper video streaming gives a possibility to make better compressing of moving pictures, but because of that two points I described, I am looking for other solution.

    The OrangePi Lite + GC2035 (or webcam) seems to be the cheapest set (NanoPi has more expensive CAM module). Other sets are much more expensive (RPi), or too weak (Omega2), or difficult to buy here (C.H.I.P.)

     

    Please, let me ask one more time - it is possible to take pictures directly to RAM, not to flash memory - to save time, because pictures will be transmitted immediately (no need to store them).

    I am going to make a project using OrangePi (most likely OrangePi Lite, but could be other model) with a camera. So, there is my supplication, for someone to make a test and check 

    HOW MANY pictures (let's say 640x480) can the camera take PER ONE SECOND (working continuously, in a loop)?

    I am interested in both types of cameras:  a USB webcam and OrangePi CAM module. And it's about taking pictures, not a movie.

     

    By the way - it is possible to take pictures into RAM? I mean not writing it to SD card. It would improve performance :-)

    My project for Orange Pi Lite will be used in a car. To make the installation easy for everyone I would like to supply it from car lighter socket. Of course, this solution is not perfect (frequent insert/pull the plug by the user, current decays etc.).

    I mean problems with switching off without shutdown. I also mean how uSD will stand it.

    For now, I thing to attach an 18650 cell with booster/charger which will work as a "buffer" to keep current when the lighter socket is off. But I am afraid that it can keep power only for 1-2 hour. Is there a possibility to check the power level of the connected cell and shut down the system when the power is low? Probably a connection will be needed for that booster to send signal to OPiLite? Or maybe there is any other solution?

    My second question is about to put OPiLite to use less power when it has nothing to do? I mean automatically or forced by a script (first to go low when there is nothing to do and then to go high, when job should be done).

    That's it! Product names should give customer knowledge about products line (eventually a "knowledge" he to buy more expensive model). Naming from Xunlongs gives only one - mess and confusion :-)

    There is H5 in recently released nanoPi NEO 2 - I wonder if they worked out a solution for the problem of you are writing.

  7. Yes, please enrich this SBC :-) 

    I can see two advantages. First, that dedicated camera for this Orange is about half price than camera dedicated for Nano Pi Neo, so making project with this SBC and camera will be more advantageous.

    Second - EMMC, what is - if I correctly understand all I have red - more durable than uSD. For example in my project there is relatively frequent switching on and off (a car installation - works only when car goes) and I'm afraid how long it will work before uSD die or Linux break up... a battery connection would be useful (a wish only).

    And more of it - it is cheaper than NanoPi Neo Air (don't know how does it translate into performance).

    Sorry if my question is inopportune - would be possible to change all that appropriate parameters on-line, when system is working?

    I mean my Orange Pi is working on very low gears, waiting for a signal (from smartphone via WiFi or BT). When the signal comes, Orange Pi switch gear up and performs important tasks (that need more power). Then a signal again and lower gear :-)

    Could be very good way to make boards smarter :-)

  9. Camera 'works' even with video on various Allwinner boards with legacy kernel. Custom google powered search for '@lex camera' is maybe the best way to explore the various supported devices (@abramq: various Allwinner boards featuring different SoCs all features a 24 pin FPC CSI connector but pinouts are different between vendors)

    I have seen, that CSI could NOT be seen as a standard, every board needs it's own camera module. Worst - there could be two diffrent models V500A and V500B for the same board and you have to know which to buy;-) )

    The set of OrangePi Lite + it's camera module is most cheap, thats why I was decided, camera module for NanoPi is double price, similar camera module for Raspberry Pi.

    Though an absolutely stupid move but if we would support the CHIP and add a legacy variant to Armbian's build system, CSI cameras could be used with the CHIP. But who is stupid enough to do unpaid work on the CHIP? And NextThing isn't stupid enough to pay more than absolutely necessary to get some good press and basic support for some missing R8/A13 features. Could this be also called an Chicken-egg problem? ;)

    Maybe one day...:-) But I/m affraid even if it will work - it will work only with one model of camera module - I wonder which one ;-)

    By the way - I ask out of curiosity - what would it be an order of magnitude to finance such work?

  10. Hardware is dirt cheap while "free" software can cost you some money. Luckily, if you start with Armbian, your basic things are covered - you already saved yourself hundreds of hours and dollars. That's our main advantage - you don't need to start from a pile of junk (Allwinner stock SDK) or spaghetti tutorials.

    Why? You are wasting time. Forum is more or less inactive and their official support, just not worth the trouble creating forum username.

    Good to know. You think NanoPi is good choice? I was wondering about all options, even Raspberry Pi 3 with camera module (and BT is built-in), but I realy not need so many features as it has.
  11. Nevertheless, at present you should be able to do wifi in ad hoc mode and use obex with bt ? I never tried wifi ad hoc and obex since bluez4. What are the problems ?

    To make real test I need some units, Now I am on "research" stage. I have not so much money to buy many diffrent models of SBC and test which is most suitable, so I only read specs and forums, to find out what is wortwhile.

  12. Exactly, which one? I need my board to send files. The easiest way is to use WiFi network, but I have an enviroment without router (those are requirements of my product - sending files even if there is no internet). First way was Bluetooth, then WiFi-Direct. Both have problems to implement. If there will be other way - you will save my life :-) By the way - InfraRed is to slow for me.

  13. Ok, thanks for your voice. The C.H.I.P. is good sample - they put camera connector on its board but there is no one camera you can connect, even on their forum they are silent when people asking 'what with this camera?'

    I know, that I can not demand to much for that money, but I don't understand - if they want to cut costs why they mount that connector on the board? It makes people irritated.

     

    I am really impressed about SBC boards, they makes a little revolution on IoT market, but producers should know that if they will not care about system, about drivers - their boards will die on the market. The open source socials may care about it but also may not. And please don't forget we are talking about standard features of such boards - Bluetooth exists for years, this is basic technology everybody expect to use, similarly WiFi. Communication is the base today, Realtek chips exists for years too but when you buy new board what you have to do is read n posts to force your board to comunicate. Would be better they make price  $ 1 more expensive - on every board would be $ "zilions" - and invest it into software. In my humble opinion of course.

     

    I have ordered some OrangePi Lite with camera and NanoPi Neo Air with camera. I am not giving up - hope there will be a way to succesfully run my project :-)
