You can just write the image to the SD card and boot.

For SSH, as long as you know what IP address the Helios64 gets than you can just use that to connect.

The serial terminal is just to check if things booted correctly or in case of an error that needs to be diagnosed.

You should be fine with your usual process.

Thank you Sir!  I thought that was the case, but needed confirmation.

  2. I finally assembled my Helios 64 today.  Went well, just took a while.

I'm reading the Kobol Wiki page for installing the OS on the internal EMMC and am a bit confused.  Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I usually boot a SBC the first time from an SD card to do some testing.  Then I'll use Armbian config to install the OS onto the EMMC when I am ready.  The Kobol Wiki talks about first installing uboot from an SD card. Is that actually needed?  Also, do I really need to set up a serial terminal session?  I usually just SSH into the box (I know find the IP address via my DHCP server) and configure everything from there.

  3. Trying to understand this issue.

If I ONLY need the 1Gbs (LAN1) ethernet connection and DO NOT need the 2.5Gbs (LAN2) connection, do I need to perform the "Fix" for this issue?  I'll be using Armbian Buster for this device.

    Please stick around!

YES, please don't leave. We are going to have to determine how this is going to work.

Igor is the owner of all of this so his opinion matters most. Being a moderator is a tough job, we are ALWAYS the bad cop.

Let's work as a team to make the Armbian community better. Yes, it'll take a long time, but our support lets the developers do their magic.

  5. Igor,

I would be happy to assist as a moderator.  I've been a moderator on a number of forums in the past and would love to help out the Armbian community.  I tried to apply through the link bit do not have enough posts.

I am on the east coast of the US (GMT-5).  Please let me know if I can assist.

    Thanks!

  6. I ordered a second PBP wth the ANSI keyboard. Should be here shortly. I am happy to send my ISO keyboard version to the Armbian developers.

Just let me know where to ship it. It'll be coming from the United States.

    Read more carefully:

    1. Armbian Bionic
      legacy kernel 4.4.y
    2. Armbian Bionic
      desktop legacy kernel 4.4.y
    3. Armbian Stretch
      legacy kernel 4.4.y
    4. Armbian Stretch
      desktop legacy kernel 4.4.y

Server is the one without a desktop in name. (I agree it's not very clear and we have to fix this UX)

Ahhhh, I TOTALLY missed the "check other download options" on the Rock64 Page.

Thank you Igor!  Appreciate all the work you do for us.

  8. I see the latest images for the Rock64 are marked as desktop.  I am looking for a lightweight server only version.  I still have an older server version that I downloaded a while ago, specifically 5.59.  If I install 5.59, can I do and apt-get update/apt-get upgrade to get to the latest version?  Any issues with that approach?

    Thanks!

  9. Thanks for that response TonyMac.  Great information.  The Armbian team does some GREAT work, and I really appreciate what they do. I am FAR from a programmer or developer so cannot assist there. Once I get all my RPi's replaced with Rock64's and Armbian, I shall try to assist as you recommend.

  10. Can someone please help me understand how Armbian for Rock64 is developed?

In the past, there was an image for the Rock64 that was a server image, not a desktop image.  Now, I see  Ubuntu and a Debian Stretch desktop images, no server image.  Is there a plan to build a server image going forward?

Also, will a newer kernel be built at some point?

Not trying to stir the pot or cause trouble, just trying to understand where the Rock64 support is going in the future.

Thank you for all the spectacular work the Armbian team does.

  11. Thanks @tkaiser, appreciate you feedback.  I'll review all the links you sent and educate myself.

Luckily, other than Pi-hole, none of my use cases need to store data or logs on the flash/eMMC.  I'll move everything to the hard disks.  I only purchase brand name flash drives from reputable sellers like Amazon.  So far, I've had NO issues with the devices I've purchased.

Thank you for all the work you do for the Armbian and SBC communities.

  12. Trying to choose between an eMMC module or a USB Flash drive for the boot volume on a Rock64.  I have a few Rock64's that I'm building as various services (Nextcloud, Pi-Hole, VPN, OMV, and/or Netatalk Backup).  None of these devices will need large boot volumes as the data will be in secondary (Hard or SSD) Drives or will require VERY little data storage.

On the RPi's that the Rock64's are replacing, I've been using USB Flash drives for booting.  I get the feeling that an eMMC module is a better choice, but do have any real knowledge.  Are the eMMC modules more reliable and less prone to corruption that USB Flash Drives?

I do have some 32GB and 64GB eMMC models from Pine64 and am going to try them out shortly.  Any thoughts and advice?

Thank you all in advance.  Armbian ROCKS!

None. This is first preview version and only a few things works. IMO at least 6-12months or even more to match the legacy kernel and be ready for some production. deployment  This estimation is pure speculation so don't hold it.

    Fair enough..  Had to ask!

  14. I just downloaded the March 26th nightly of Stretch for Rock64.  Getting the following error running apt-get update/apt-get upgrade:

E: The repository 'http://beta.armbian.com stretch Release' does no longer have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
    root@rock64:~#

Re-imaged with a new Flash drive and still getting the same issue. Is there a problem with beta.armbian.com tonight?

    Thanks!

  15. Armbian noob here.  I am looking for some guidance from the Armbian experts.

I am familier with Debian 8 and 9 on x86/adm64 architectures as well as Raspbian on RPi's.  Been using Linux off and on for 15 years.  Just purchased some Rock64 boards and plan on using them for NextcloudPi, PiVPN, and PiHole.

I just saw that Armbian has released a nightly of Debian Stretch for the Rock64.  I have downloaded it and gotten it installed.  Ran apt-get upgrade/apt-get update and all went well.  Does this Armbian image have all the "standard" packages and utilities installed?  Are their any other general packages/app that I need for a general server image? Any other recommendations or suggestions for using Armbian as a general purpose linux server OS?

I understand that Armbian Stretch for the Rock64 os still in testing, so I realize I am taking my life in my own hands if I use this as a production OS.

    Thank you!

Last time I was installing PiVPN it was installing fine ... Which build have you used? It doesn't seem that it's a board specifics problem.

    Armbian_5.34.171121_Rock64_Ubuntu_xenial_default_4.4.77.img

May have been User (me) error...

Also the day before, PiVPN was having problems resolving.  Maybe something was hosed.  The reinstall worked, so I may just go with it and not waste any more time troubleshooting.

    Thanks!

  17. Has anyone tried to install PiVPN or EasyRSA on a Rock64?  I tried this and had some issues where EasyRSA did not install.  No errors were shown on the install or captured in the install log.  Took me a while to figure out that EasyRSA was not installed.  It even created .opvn files for clients...

I finally figured out what happened.  Did some research and found a suggestion to manually install some packages BEFORE installing PiVPN.  That seems to work, so now I have a working VPN.

I just wanted to see if anyone else is having an issue.  I will also post on the PiVPN Github site to get their input.

    Thanks!

  18. I have successfully gotten Armbian to boot from a USB flash drive on the Rock64 board.  Followed ayufan's instructions on how to update SPI Flash with his boot code and then wrote the Armbian Rock64 image to a USB flash drive.  All worked as expected.

Thanks to everyone at Armbian for all the great work!
