  1. Ok, got it! I've moved finally to Ubuntu Focal server: make SSD from disk image make eMMC from the same disk image edit /boot/ on eMMC to my needs make SSD via USB 3.0 as root file system in kernel parameters Kernel upgrade is hard but possible.
  2. There was unneeded line in /etc/samba/smb.conf: ; socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_KEEPALIVE SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
  3. I am observing huge difference in samba speed (both ways to/from PC on Gigabit Ethernet) with Rock Pi 4B. Earlier I had Debian and Ubuntu provided by Radxa and recently speed has gone from 115 MB/s to ~12 MB/s. I moved to Armbian which is currently available for download. Before any updates I had 115 MB/s transfer speed. When I updated to Armbian 20.08.11 Focal with Linux 5.8.15-rockchip64 the speed has go down to ~15 MB/s. The bigger change that happened was kernel upgrade. I exclude problems like: PSU (it is over enough), home network (nothing has changed) and SSD speed (checked - 330 MB/s). Has anyone else also observed limited speed recently?
  4. Hi All! I've recently moved to Armbian (Debian buster server) on my Rock Pi 4B - from Ubuntu provided by Radxa (some way failed upgrade). However system is booting from eMMC which has Radxa kernel and then directly to Armbian file system on SSD connected via USB 3.0. Great is that Armbian is working with Radxa kernel, which I want to change to 5.8.14-rockchip64. My question is how should I prepare /boot folder on eMMC (which is FAT file system) to boot Armbian kernel? Is there any other way (reformat eMMC for ext4@32768 sector for /boot folder) to achieve this? Thanks.

I bought here https://pishop.at/index.php/single-board-computer/rock-pi-4-model-b-4gb-detail with overall price (with shipment) €114.78 (504.44 PLN). I've seen the same model €105 from Spain without shipment...

@martinayotte I am not asking about Armbian. I am asking about the mentioned OSes. I have Armbian on armv7l and it is 32-bit. At least provided binaries are 32-bit. I ask about bitness of the provided OSes for Rock Pi 4. There is no Armbian for this board.

    RK3399 Orange Pi

Well, guys, I am just letting you know that: I will get my money back for Orange Pi RK3399 or just sell it as it does not meet my standards, that is it has USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0 and following the unresolved by support problems (Wi-Fi, Ethernet) I am rejecting this board as it does not comply with my needs I was interested in Firefly RK3399 which has no bugs like OPi RK3399 but will not currently invest money in it, however it seems like a great board Move my RPi 3 B+ in-house hosting to Virtual Private Server as I need more performance power So this is how ends my adventure with single-board computers. From now on I will be using them just for testing purposes. Anyway thank you all very much for help and comments. I appreciate your effort and wish you good luck in your battles with these quite fun parts of electronics.

Well, not 90 days, but 30. Yes, for future I need to test the hardware in a shorter period of time and send it ASAP to get refund. In this case seller should act like a good EU company and just make a refund, not making any problems as they just did.
  19. pbies

    RK3399 Orange Pi

@Igor that is another one reason to make the seller refund me. Nobody needs a hardware, when there is no proper software for it. If company wants to make hardware omitting software, then it should take responsibility for its actions. No more theory needed for that.

@chwe @NicoD thank you guys, I really appreciate your effort. Board is in China so I have no possibility to move on. I'll let you know what will happen next. Maybe some Skype in night hours would be good for that, I'll let you know in a private message. I have CEST time here but willing to go over night to make the things work, as you will have time to help me. However support from seller is ready to help me giving ready solution, which I cannot accept. I was asking them for instructions, as I will reflash the board few times so their solution is not acceptable.

@chwe OPi is at this moment at seller's place (China) awaiting AliExpress decision to make me a refund. If that will not work, I'll get the board from them and then I will have time to mess with it. Research that I have done tells me, that there are some files needed to run Wi-Fi and Ethernet as I expect, and they are files in the below folders: /system/etc/firmware/ /system/vendor/firmware/ I know that I've put some files in these folders and everything with Wi-Fi and Ethernet has began to work. However Wi-Fi was holding up the device after few hours of beign used and there was no possibility to run Ethernet at 1Gbps. I am not exactly interested in Armbian in that case, but I can flash it, if all the hardware will be working properly with it (CPU cores, eMMC speed, Wi-Fi, Ethernet). I can build the software, I have Windows and Linux on my PC, but I have no certainty that at 16.04 like version of ARM OS the Ethernet will work at 1Gbps which is crucial here for my appliance.

    RK3399 Orange Pi

@NicoD yes, you are right. I was convinced that in case of boards like RK3399 it will be the same as for RPi3B+ and previous - that the provided boards and software will be functioning properly out-of-the-box.

@chwe you didn't understood what I've written here. You catch parts of my posts and complain about each one taken separately. Do understand the whole problem, not only parts of it! Then, after understanding the whole situation you are allowed to comply about the whole problem, not only parts of it. I won't be explaining further as normally thinking person would agree with me 100 times about the above and even didn't negotiate my undeniable right to get my money back. I understand that most of you here are engineers that like to mess with such hardware, but there are also rules of normal people trying to do sth with properly provided hardware and software - and this is what I am complaining here about - the provided software and specs of the hardware. Ask yourself these questions: provided software lacks properly working Wi-Fi and Ethernet - how long and how much effort will you give before you give up trying to make it work if you will be able to make it work (which is still unsure)? would you buy pendrive which lacks controller, because it is made for creating your own one? I've written that I need instructions for making Wi-Fi and Ethernet work on any provided OS, but I am not interested in on-board ready solution - did you read this part correclty and fully understood or are you just trolling me? It is still about points 3: a+b+c. There is such law which I was talking about, make a research, then comply about my right to get refund. About u-boot: I don't have time to mess with such low-level software, I need a board with given in specs functionalities and expect them to work. If the board does not comply with the specs - it is returned back and should be refunded - that's how EU world works and this is covered by international agreements. Users come with lower or higher levels of advancement in technology, with my 30-years experience I expect that provided hardware and software are using whole hardware abilities, and if they don't - there is no place for such hardware and software on the market - simple as that.

@chwe My intention was not to rant the company, but warn potential buyers from making the same mistake. Yes, it is AliExpress and it is far after dispute possibility as the board I've bought about 3 months ago. I was fighting 2 months with the board and with the support to make things work as expected. Two weeks ago I've sent the board to support as they suspected hardware problem. It wasn't hardware problem. They offered me their own OS for the board - flashed by them - what destroys my expectation for this board to be applicable to my needs and violates the given 3 bullets list. There was no warranty given at the moment of order - that destroys all the trust to them and is first reason to not buy anything from them. If someone is selling sth, especially in computer engineering branch - he needs to take responsibility for it. Here we have "sold, money earned, GTFO client!". If company does not give any warranty and does not comply with EU regulations about international purchasing - then the company violates the law and should be prosecuted. I gave them my trust buying the hardware with specific parameters but they violated it by: 1. offering different specs - AliExpress is sensitive about that and I am fighting with company through them 2. having horrible support 3. not complying with normal market behaviors. I am not guilty here: I've ordered the hardware, it does not work as in specs, so I return the hardware and await for refund. I've not done anything wrong to be treated like that by this company.
