NicoD got a reaction from Werner in Station P1 - unboxing
I've got the NVMe hat on the way. I asked the people of Firefly. I only needed to pay for the hat, so I'm happy. The extra $30 for shipping was a bit too much for me. It's more than the device is worth.
I don't know if I mentioned it already. I replaced the thick thermal pad with copper shims. It doesn't overheat anymore. I'll show it in my review video. I needed 2 copper shims on top of each other to reach the height of the thermal pad. With copper shims of double the height would probably perform a bit better.
Now the case does get very hot when used maxed out.
The CPU used to go over 85C and start throttling. Now maximum temperature is 79C and no throttling. Tho this is with 1.5Ghz/2Ghz overclock. With default clocks it didn't overheat.

I had the same.
They explained after a few days that it had some outgoing customs issues and asked me to place the order again.
Yesterday I opened a dispute which was resolved by Aliexpress within an hour in my favour and today I got the money back.
Seeing how well it went with the dispute I ordered it again - it was 0.25EUR more expensive now. Let's see how it fares this time ;-)

NicoD reacted to balbes150 in What is your network transfer speed? Any tips to increase it?
Devices that you connect in the same room ? Wifi is an evil that can only be used for mobile devices, which in principle cannot use a cable (LAN). You ruin your health and the health of others. Now there are a lot of idiots who are too lazy to lay a cable and they stupidly use WiFi shit.

NicoD got a reaction from Werner in Is Odroid HC4 Focal 5.9 image ok?
Good news.
SATA works on mainline focal 5.10.6.
Also my 5Ghz wifi dongle works out of the box. I've got everything I could want. After that ordeal I'm so happy to have things working as should

NicoD got a reaction from pschasch in Testing kali-apps with katoolin on Armbian 20.11.3 Buster
All the Kali tools should work on Armbian Buster. Kali is debian with many network tools pre-installed.

There was actually an attempt to bring Armbian and Kali together and release it as images for SBCs. However the project is not very active. I guess they underestimated the effort needed to put in for maintenance

If it was a cheaper board I'd do that. This is one of the most expensive I've bought. PSU is also a 15V 60W brick. Adds to the cost.
I rather save my money to buy an Odroid Go Super next month. I never wanted a handheld so much, except when the Gameboy came out maybe.
HC4 also suddenly became a gaming rig with 500GB of retro games on HDD. Too many games, I can't find the ones I want since thousands to browse thru.

NicoD reacted to pschasch in Testing kali-apps with katoolin on Armbian 20.11.3 Buster
Hello,
I was looking for Kali on BPi and tried the "Kali Linux BananaPi offensive-securityDOTcom-2020.04"-image without success.
Unfortunately the image does not boot and no support from there (Domain-contact nor forum[...][...]).
Some message about "mount: mounting /dev/mmcblk0p1 on /root failed: No such device", even if kernel was started from this 'No such device"'-SD-card.
So Igor wrote me about katoolin which I tested on BPi with Armbian 20.11.3 Busterarmbian.
For anyone who is interested here is my way:
install "Armbian 20.11.3 Buster \l"
install "katoolin see https://github.com/LionSec/katoolin"
sudo python2.7 katoolin/katoolin.py
-> Add Kali repositories & Update by the menu
katoolin.py adds "deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free" to /etc/apt-sources
apt-get install armitage to get msfconsole,
first test with vsftpd_234_backdoor-exploit on testdevice was successfull, meterpreter not tested yet.
apt-get install burpsuite did not work, I had to add "deb http://old.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib" manually.
after this burpsuite could be started.
For all who will look for this one day :-D

I also got my Odroid HC4. Doing my first tests. USB seems very buggy with the Ubuntu Mate 20.04 from Odroid.
This seems better with Armbian focal legacy desktop. Tho there no sata is found, while that does work with the Odroid HC4 Mate image.
I'll try a lot more images to see if/what difference there is.
Haven't checked any mainline yet.
It does seem to have performance issue's when overclocked(2Ghz/2.1Ghz). It sometimes performs worse than with default clocks. Weird.
I'm a bit surprised about how good it is for gaming.
I like it a lot, but it did cost me a lot. Tho also bit my own fault.
I first bought it from AmeriDroid. It was stuck in transit for a +month. So I got my money back and bought another at a Belgian seller. A lot more expensive. A day after I got my HC4 from the Belgian seller the one from AmeriDroid arrived. If only I had waited a few more days I'd have saved about 40euro. Buying from Hardkernel would have been even more cheap I'd guess.
I may send it back to AmeriDroid without fees. Luckily. I really wanted a HC4, but 2 is too much

NicoD reacted to rob2021 in A few things needed to make the N2/N2+ the perfect desktop SBC
Thanks Nico - that worked! Much appreciated.
For the record, I installed as per your instruction, re-set consoleblank back to 0 (as this was making the console blank even when trying to actually use it!), rebooted, configured the timers via the GUI and all is well.
thanks again!

NicoD got a reaction from balbes150 in Buster image - unable to boot RockPi 4 B (1GB) board
@IgorI can confirm that freshly build Buster Legacy on the M4V2 is working. I love the native ARM build, so much faster than the RockPiX And that's RK3399, haven't gotten N2+ to work yet.
I do not know what the problem with the RockPi4 image is.
It can't have been the same issue as M4V2. The discription makes me think it's also hdmi not working as with P1.

NicoD reacted to JMCC in RK3399 Legacy Multimedia Framework
New release in the repos:
Fixed Chromium showing images in indexed color, and other limitations. Fixed OpenCL broken in last update Improved X performance under glamor (by 100%, in gtkperf tests) Fixed rkcamsrc plugin for using the ISP MIPI-CSI camera (ov5647 still needs some kernel work for rk3399). Added the Rockchip RGA library (also enabled in the kernel). -

I finished the video about the media script.
I had a lot of troubles with youtube because I used a few seconds of southpark and I got age restriction 18 years. Youtube doesn't like Southpark clearly.
Tried 3 times with different clips. In the end I cut it all out.. Thanks @JMCC for the awsome work. Without your scripts I wouldn't think of using an SBC as main desktop.

Here how to use the media packages from JMCC on Armbian Buster Legacy for the RK3399. This gives Chromium hardware acceleration, and installs Kodi.
This also works for the Tinker Board and Rock64.

NicoD reacted to JMCC in Buster image - unable to boot RockPi 4 B (1GB) board
Good. I am also working on some multimedia kernel-related stuff for legacy RK3399's, I am planning to push the changes very soon too. BTW, I understnad it is conveninet to make a Jira issue for it, because that way it is easier to incorporate it into the changelog, correct?

That is expected. We don't support P1.

@JMCCI don't know what the new things should improve. But everything seems perfect. Youtube playback is great with a display resolution of 1440p.
4k even works for the first time I've known on RK3399. Also in Kodi 4k works great.
I watched Southpark's Pandemic special in 4k at 4k. I didn't know Southpark could look that good
The only thing I didn't like about Bionic with the media script was the dragging of windows that was buggy. No problem here with that. So I'd not know why I shouldn't switch now.
I can't wait for my Station P1 NVMe hat to arrive. I've already gotten a Samsung EVO 970 500GB from my mailman yesterday for it.
This setup is going on it.

@Werner @NicoD
OK, I could not resist, and compiled a test version of the latest RK Xserver. I tested it, and gave me good impression in terms of performance, and also seemed to correct some old bugs that appeared when you enabled desktop compositing. However, I cannot tell too well about the performance, because I am using the board connected to a cheap HDMI-USB capture device, on my laptop's screen
If you want to give it a try, and give some feedback, you can download the packages from here (you need to install these two with "dpkg -i *.deb", and then do "apt -f install" just in case there is some missing dep).
