Werner got a reaction from balbes150 in Running around in circles trying to choose an SBC?
Stay away from M5. It is basically a clone of the C4 but worse: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/15228-banana-pi-bpi-m5-with-amlogic-s905x3-chip-design/?do=findComment&comment=109756

@JMCCI don't know what the new things should improve. But everything seems perfect. Youtube playback is great with a display resolution of 1440p.
4k even works for the first time I've known on RK3399. Also in Kodi 4k works great.
I watched Southpark's Pandemic special in 4k at 4k. I didn't know Southpark could look that good
The only thing I didn't like about Bionic with the media script was the dragging of windows that was buggy. No problem here with that. So I'd not know why I shouldn't switch now.
I can't wait for my Station P1 NVMe hat to arrive. I've already gotten a Samsung EVO 970 500GB from my mailman yesterday for it.
This setup is going on it.

Yeah had the same issues and ended up using one of @balbes150 images which worked oob.

That means it is working
Let me explain: last update did not change any binaries. It was instead a deep change in how the package installed the libraries, since the "old simple method" that used to work in Stretch and Bionic, was not working correctly with Buster's ldconfig. So I had to do things "the complicated way", as prescribed by recent Debian packaging rules.
So, before, you were simply not having any acceleration. Hence the errors that some of you posted. Now, you are getting Glamor "acceleration", which gives you the possibility of having GPU accelerated layers (for video play, 3D apps, WebGL, etc.), in exchange for a loss in 2D performance.
Rockchip is now working on a new version of their X server, supporting EXA acceleration, which *should* be better . But I am not sure even how well it works, it would require some investigation.

Yeah we held back the opi3 to kernel 5.8 but it looks like the download page was accidentally update to 5.9
You can find stable images with 5.8 kernel here

Werner reacted to NicoD in Video : New at Armbian! Build your own Armbian image on your ARM SBC!
Hi all.
I've just finished a new video where I show how to build Armbian images on your ARM SBC.
Here is the video.
All have a jolly good Christmas or other holiday or normal day.

Werner reacted to JMCC in HDMI-CEC won't work on Buster Legacy (4.4.213-rockchip64)
It's OK, nanopct4 has rk3399 kernel. It is good to know that it only needs kernel configs to be enabled, unlike the rockpi and rockpro64 that needed DT patches in the rockchip64 kernel

I planned to create a simple DEB package with these files for easy installation as a dependency of the build environment, but so far there is not enough free time for this (after creating the package, it still needs to be placed in a network repository and check how it will work on different versions of distributions). So for now, I limit myself to "simple dumb copying" and including these files in all my images.
p.s. Unfortunately, those who want to help, at least in such simple operations, are not observed. Everyone wants to get everything for free, beautiful and that everything would work out of the box ....

dist-upgrade does not work either. I had to "force" by issuing code { font-family: Consolas,"courier new"; color: crimson; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2); padding: 2px; font-size: 105%; } apt-get install media-buster-legacy-rk3399
This also removed mpv and installed mpv classic.

I did create my user before installing the desktop. Was logged in with my user when installing the desktop. It doesn't seem to perform very good. So nothing here to see for me.

New packages uploaded to the repos (it may take some hours to synchronize).
Bug fixes: X Desktop no longer restarted on package install, so it can be installed from a desktop session (NOTE: Since the old package is still going to restart X when uninstalled, it is recommended to do this update from console). MPV now is not failing when it cannot create EGL surface (it will just default to standard x11). CEC is now working on several boards (tested in RockPro64 and Rockpi 4B). New features: MPV is now RKMPP accelerated, and allows 4K YouTube Playback (see instructions here). -

Werner reacted to NicoD in Improving thermals on your SBC
Hi all.
I've just finished a new video where I polish the heatsink of my Rock Pi X with sandpaper. This because there's a rather thick powdercoating on the heatsink in the spot where it makes contact with the SoC.
This caused a lot of thermal resistance. The SoC would get hot and overheat, while the heatsink didn't warm up. And the top of the board was the hottest spot.
Here my video.
On the NanoPi M4 and M4V2 there was a thermal pad included. This also was pretty bad.
I raplaced those with a copper shim and some thermal paste and improved the thermals by about 10C.
If you like to use your board passively cooled it can be important to look for the details to improve things. This method might also be possible on the Rock Pi 4. I don't have it anymore to test.
Greetings.

I don't know if and how popular this will be. I hope it will, but I don't know. If you do the shipping no problem.
I once almost convinced my nephew to start an SBC web shop. I'd give advice and he do sales and shipping. But too bad. He got distracted

That's a lot. Can't pay that for a hat. I could ask them for it. Might be handy to review it.

I had not found that. I didn't know of any PCIe hats for it. I had searched since I also noticed the PCIe gpios.
I might buy it, I like the P1 a lot. I am using a good 5Ghz wifi antenna since on-board wifi is way too slow.
NVMe hat would be great. I'll also look to improve the thermals. Just got the RockPiX to run 20C cooler passively. This must also be able to run passively cooled without throttling.

Werner reacted to jeanrhum in Implement Device Tree Editor
Testers needed. More especially, people with samsung, nexell or even marvell are expected.
The main issue for now is the way the dtb is named and located in the boot folder. I tried to infer it using the comptible property of the device tree, but I don't own all supported hardware .
I already tested sucessfully on several kernels (aml 4.20, rk and aw on 5.8, 5.9).

Werner reacted to NicoD in RK3399 Legacy Multimedia Framework
Works now. Boy I'm happy. I rarely use console. Never had issue's with the terminal. Only when I've got crashes I use console to reboot.
Now I'm going to relax and watch a movie with this
Already done something else today, sandpapered the contact surface of the heatsink of the RockPiX. It was bubbled and painted black. Overheated to 80C and throttle above 75C. Blender was 40m
Now with sandpapered heatsink 60C max no throttle and blender in less than 35m. Now I start my M4V2 and easy fix.
This is a way better day than yesterday Thank you!

Werner reacted to crosser in The board does not even try to boot on power-on
Thanks!
I could not respond earlier because forum allows to make only one post in the first day.
It is embarrassing, I am actually quite certain that I tried to boot with SD card and without it several times, and the result was the same (no signs of life). And I even wrote the image to the card again and tried again. But when I tried to boot yet again with the same card the next day, after reading @SIGSEGV's answer, it booted! I can only suspect lousy contact on the card or something?..
@gprovost yes, of course I did. And believe that I explained clear enough at "which step".
Anyway all is well now, thank you for your help!

I see. I normally do install and upgrades "the safe way", from console or ssh. But many people will do it from the desktop. I will release a fix for that and other bugs, G.w.

Same but fix is easy. Run the script from console, not from terminal.

Werner got a reaction from TRS-80 in Apache/Nextcloud issue
I split the topic at this point because its getting offtopic and has most likely nothing more to do with the Helios64.
You may want to ask at nextcloud forums/irc/whatever but they probably will tell you the same: check your logs and if there is nothing enable debug modes where available
