  1. I feel like I have been here before..... I'm trying to get Netatalk working on my OrangePiOne and OrangePiPC. No luck again

I have build a custom kernel with only appletalk extra as a module ( appletalk.ko) and used the then created package:

    linux-image-dev-sun8i_5.24_armhf.deb

to install this over an image of the beta images site for an orangepizero.

    Armbian_5.24.161226_Orangepizero_Ubuntu_xenial_4.9.0.img

The OrangePi boots perfect and I see the new kernel active:

    Linux orangepizero 4.9.0macippi-sun8i-g21ddf78-dirty #2 SMP Fri Jan 6 20:08:41 UTC 2017 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

Installed Netatalk after this and it is running fine...only no appletalk or AFP over DDP... very frustrating!!

I can aecho to its own address, but not to other Macintosh

    root@orangepizero:~# nbplkup
                       orangepizero:netatalk 65280.235:4

Wit tcpdump I see a lot of tuncated packages / errors:

On my older image with adjusted kernel 4.6.0 and appletalk  everything is working fine. At nbplkup looks like this:

Nothing to see from my Basilisk II emulator too. Should be....

I hoped that with a newer kernel the Ethernet problems of the Orange Pi where solved,

See my armbianmonitor -u output on:

I love to have a working ethernet card WITH Apple talk for my project "The MacIPpi". See all about it on:

    https://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/932-appletalk-on-an-orange-pi-one/

  2. Time to update my MacIPpi project!

It is made better over the time and is in use now by old Macintosh users. See this excellent post in the Swedish Dator Museum (Computer Museum) about the actual use.

    http://www.datormuseum.se/computers/apple/macintosh-plus

One bad thing about the MacIPpi is that it is still running on kernel 4.6.0 with many RX errors.

I hoped that this is fixed in Armbian 5,24 and kernel 4.9.0

I’m afraid that eth0 is working fine….no more RX errors…but NO APPLETALK!

And yes..I compiled appletalk as a module and installed Netatalk.

Is this driver for the Ethernet card now capable of running appletalk or not?

I have again the same errors as you see in this same posting.

See the errors....truncated npb is not OK.... It seems to recieve data from an other Macintsoh, but it is not understoot...

The OrangePi is also not visible for other Macintosh.

  3. I use the IP information provided by motd to find my IP address. I is useful when I reboot from the serial connection and like to SSH to the machine. I only look at the screen and see the IP address. I fixed /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo like this:

    #ip_address=$((ifconfig -a) | sed -n '/inet addr/s/.*addr.\([^ ]*\) .*/\1/p' | head -1)
    ip_address=$((ifconfig eth0) | awk '/inet / {gsub("addr:", "", $2); print $2}')

now it displays its IP address nicely!
  4. I had the same problem on my Orange Pi One. I compiled a 3.4.110 kernel as you would need to do it. With appletalk.ko module. But no way I got it going. I was also seeing the device itself. I could see the AppleTalk packages coming in (with tcpdump) but netatalk could see anything, tkaiser idea that maybe the Allwinner employees don't know what AppleTalk is and totally forgot to add it in their driver.

Only, with the help of tkaiser I could use the newly mainline kernel 4.6.0 it worked (BTW I used the promisc tric on my NTC C.H.I.P.).

The problem with the 4.6.0 kernel is that there are lots of RX errors. So much that after two days you will be out of network do you need to reboot.. My hope is that this will be fixed. Then I will have a perfect SoC as AppleTalk router and network server! A quad core for $9.95

I already claimed a name for this device; MacPi :-)

  5. Running 4.6.0 on a Orange Pi PC and also getting lost of errors on ethernet. Rebooting is the only thing I can do.

Anyone knows if there is some progress in this? Otherwise a great board for low price!

  6. If someone could make the correct files I can test uploading it to the C.H.I.P.

The firmware update script want these files:

    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${ROOTFS_URL} rootfs.ubi
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} sun5i-r8-chip.dtb
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} sunxi-spl.bin
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} sunxi-spl-with-ecc.bin
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} uboot-env.bin
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} zImage
    cache_download "${FW_IMAGE_DIR}" ${BR_URL} u-boot-dtb.bin

Maybe I can "recycle" some of the files listed here and use only zImage and rootfs for getting Armbian running? Not sure...because this is new to me.

  7. If you want to buy a C.H.I.P. it costs $9. Shipping to the Netherlands $6.22, so in total: $15.22 USD

    See: http://getchip.com/pages/chip

If you want to connect a descend screen, so no TV or analog monitor, you have to buy an addon, like a VGA or HDMI board.

VGA is $10, HDMI is $15. So yes... if you need normal screen output or stay headless an Orange Pi One could be a better choice.

Best use...Good question.I guess that people like the WIFI and Bluetooth on board. Maybe also the 4GB storage which is on board.

If you want to know what are people doing with their C.H.I.P have a look at this page:

    https://chip.hackster.io/

  8. @toast
I think that the OS provided with CHIP is very basic. There are not modules on board. So you would like to change that in an easy way. From my experience Armbian has an excellent way in developing a custom build OS with an easy way of adding kernel modules. That why it would be nice to offers this to the people who will get there CHIP in June.

    @tkaiser point 1

I don't think it is wise to buy a board for you personal. This is clearly definitely not what you want from a Soc.

Fact is that many people have done so and that this is their first experience with a Soc. Or people who are tempted to find a use because of its low price. I agree with you that if you look close to CHIP there is a downside, like CPU, Power problems, shipping costs. I have also the feeling that the longs term bringing it to the market is now a disadvantage. When it hits the market it is already one year old and not evolved. A version 2.0 is not yet announced.

Still I think it is better for Armbian to embrace CHIP then to ignore it.

    @kaiser point 2

What is at the moment your favorite Soc? Price compared to performance?

Great story about your work with the PowerMac and Sun SparcStations. The world has really changed!

On my desk you see besides the PowerBook 100 an old Apple Lisa. This one has a 68000 5Mhz processor, 2 MB of Ram and a 10 MB harddisk. It has costed around € 15000,-

So yes also for this one. An Orange Pi One is better and cheaper!

  11. @zador.blood.stained

    YES!!!! That does the trick!

    console=ttyS0,115200

I made a mistake by not thing from the perspective from the Orange Pi One. On my laptop is is ttyUSB0. On my Orange Pi One it is ttyS0.

Thank you very much. I have no monitor so I'm stuck to serail. I love this output!

  12. Both Darko and Igor reactions made me think how to solve this issue.

Darko advised me to use a serail connection. But... I'm using one from my Ubuntu laptop!

    screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200

So I checked boot.cmd Igor advised me. I'm using that one!

I thought I was clever and changed env   console=tty1 to console=ttyUSB0,115200 in boot.cmd and did a mkimage

Now my boot.scr will have this on board:

    root@orangepione:/boot# diff boot.cmd boot.igor
    7c7
    < setenv bootargs "console=ttyUSB0,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootwait rootfstype=ext4 cgroup_enable=memory swapaccount=1 sunxi_ve_mem_reserve=0 sunxi_g2d_mem_reserve=0 sunxi_no_mali_mem_reserve sunxi_fb_mem_reserve=16 hdmi.audio=EDID:0 disp.screen0_output_mode=1920x1080p60 panic=10 consoleblank=0 enforcing=0 loglevel=${verbosity}"
    ---
    > setenv bootargs "console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootwait rootfstype=ext4 cgroup_enable=memory swapaccount=1 sunxi_ve_mem_reserve=0 sunxi_g2d_mem_reserve=0 sunxi_no_mali_mem_reserve sunxi_fb_mem_reserve=16 hdmi.audio=EDID:0 disp.screen0_output_mode=1920x1080p60 panic=10 consoleblank=0 enforcing=0 loglevel=${verbosity}"

    reboot again and....nothing cahnged.

Again no print out from my linux boot to my serail connection. see my boot:

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0
    switch to partitions #0, OK
    mmc0 is current device

    Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid orangepione ttyS0

    orangepione login:

Special if I have an error in my kernel I won't see anything.

    Any ideas?

  13. Good question. To be sure I checked my afpd configuration:

"OrangePiOne" -ddp -notcp -uamlist uams_guest.so,uams_clrtxt.so,uams_dhx.so -defaultvol /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default -systemvol /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.system -nouservol -guestname "nobody" -setuplog "default log_maxdebug /var/log/afpd.log"

    So no TCP afp possible.

The speed is acceptable. I clocked a transfer of a 7 MB file in about 2 minutes. With my PowerBook 100 with its 40 MB harddisk perfectly workable.

With TCP over AppleTalk it is different. That is not fast but perfectly acceptable. If you want to browse the Internet with Netacape 1.1 not many sites are available. But some telneting is perfect.

See some pictures of my setup. I use NSCA Telnet to login my Orange Pi One.

  14. Somehow I don't get it.

If I boot Armbian it never has a verbose startup.

I I check the script it looks like at startup there should be a /boot/.verbose file. There is....

I don't see a env variable to get this done... So I need some help.

Could anyone tell me how to get this done?

  15. BIG SUCCESS!!!!!!!

Orange Pi One is now working as a MacIPgw, a Linux MacIP gateway.

It is able to encapsulate IP in AppleTalk.

I'm now able to connect all my old Macintosh computers to the Internet with the help of one Orange Pi One.

Unbelievable....... A $9,95 computer with full blown Linux OS.... Armbian!!!

Thanks everybody for helping me to get this far so quickly!

Look at the picture below. I'm surfing the Internet with Netscape 1.1 (1994/1995).

To show I'm not cheating I show the TCP/IP control panel.
