I am very confused. I don't know where the problem is. Have you ever encountered the same problem?

Kernel 4.19.80-sunxi  Debian Stretch

armbian version 5.98

Orange Pi R1

No third-party hardware was added. Pure R1 bare board

Did you try those images: https

Thank you very much for your reply. In fact, I had an idea last night and I want to try your image file. Not implemented yet.
This morning, I downloaded Armbian_5.90_Orangepi-r1_Debian_buster_next_4.19.57

It works fine the first time it starts up. But the problem still exists after the reboot.

Sorry, because the last edit lost the debug information. Waiting for my next capture. In fact, the error message is the same.

The following just got the attachment information of armbianmonitor

Very strange, when the first time the system was started, it was normal. Then restart the problem again. When I link to wifi, I try to restart it no less than 8 times. The problem did not reappear. I began to wonder if it was a wifi problem, once again re-burning the system, constantly testing the startup, shutting down and restarting. No problems have been found yet.

At this point I did not link wifi

Just installed Armbian_5.90_Orangepi-r1_Debian_buster_next_4.19.57.img on my new R1 too yesterday.

I have the NAS-Board attached to it with an 256 Transcend msata SSD

Was working fine, could partition, format and mount the SSD.

Then started to install Nextcloud from armbian-config software menu.

Started fine first, but then showed kernel messages popping up until it completely froze.

Rebooted by powering up and rerun the installation leaving me with a non-functional Nextcloud installation.

Just resetet it now  by burning the image again on the SD card -  maybe I wanted too much from that little board with only 256 MB.

thank you for your reply. I don't have access to third-party hardware. First, make sure that the software system is stable and try to access other hardware and drivers. My current position is Debian_stretch

I tried it again and again today.

Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img    Armbian_5.90_Orangepi-r1_Debian_buster_next_4.19.57.img

Stability is still said in the past.

But I need to build the system myself. The current build script is the latest Armbian_5.98_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.79.img

This image is very unstable. I am thinking of ways to roll back the kernel version or something else.

@Igor

You can always give the dev branch a shot. Maybe it runs reliable on Linux 5.3.x

thank you very much for your suggestion. But at the moment I don't need a very high working kernel. The kernel program used by Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img is 4.19.38. The image kernel version of the new build problem is 4.19.79 or 4.19.80
Today, two identical Orange Pi-r1s have been used to perform an uninterrupted power-off test on the Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img image. As a result, there is very little kernel crash.

In fact, my job is very simple, using the "customize-image.sh" script when building. Then install the required customization software in the chroot.

Now I want to use the 4.19.38 kernel program when I build it, so I will try it if you have this information. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Did you try those images:
https://www.armbian.com/orange-pi-r1/

After countless attempts, the final conclusion is reached.

Use Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img
It has been basically stable. And installing the software I use is also normal.

Also tried installing Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img system

My ultimate goal is to build my own system using the "customize-image.sh" script to install my software for packaging.

The problem now is that the build script builds the latest version of armbian 5.98 or higher. How will I build with the old kernel 4.19.38? Or is it that I need to wait for a while? I am expecting this problem will be fixed?

Just installed Armbian_5.90_Orangepi-r1_Debian_buster_next_4.19.57.img on my new R1 too yesterday.

I have the NAS-Board attached to it with an 256 Transcend msata SSD

Just resetet it now  by burning the image again on the SD card -  maybe I wanted too much from that little board with only 256 MB.

I woud like to see a picture of your NAS-board installation on the OPi R1, because - I think - I was (one of) the first who did attach

the NAS-board to the OPi R1 ;)

After countless attempts, the final conclusion is reached.

Use Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img
It has been basically stable. And installing the software I use is also normal.

Also tried installing Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img system
Upgrade linux-image-next-sunxi to 4.19.79 or higher 4.19.80  Kernel crash

Upgrade process:

root@orangepi:~# dpkg -r linux-image-next-sunxi
(Reading database ... 33468 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing linux-image-next-sunxi (5.83) ...
update-initramfs: Deleting /boot/initrd.img-4.19.38-sunxi

root@orangepi:~# dpkg -i linux-image-next-sunxi_5.98_armhf.deb

After rebooting, the kernel crashes:

I did download from https://apt.armbian.com/pool/main/l/linux-4.19.62-sunxi/linux-image-next-sunxi_5.92_armhf.deb 4.19.62 Kernel Installation

I am expecting this problem will be fixed?

@yuanyunlong I never had kernel-crashes with the OPi R1 neither with 4.19.y or 5.x kernel versions

I also did try this very actual dev-version without a kernel-crash:

Welcome to Debian Buster with Armbian Linux 5.3.7-sunxi
package bsp-kernel[5.98.191026] u-boot[5.98] dtb[5.98.191026] firmware[5.98] config[5.98]

The only thing which came to my mind is that you only do update the kernel package, but when armbian does a "system-update" there are some additional packages which would/should(?) be updated along with the kernel package:

linux-u-boot-orangepi-r1-dev 5.98 armhf Uboot loader 2019.04
u-boot-tools 2019.01+dfsg-7 armhf companion tools for Das U-Boot bootloader
linux-buster-root-dev-orangepi-r1 5.98 armhf Armbian tweaks for buster on orangepi-r1 (dev branch)
linux-image-dev-sunxi 5.98.191026 armhf Linux kernel, version 5.3.7-sunxi
linux-dtb-dev-sunxi 5.98.191026 armhf Linux DTB, version 5.3.7-sunxi
armbian-config 5.98 all Armbian configuration utility
armbian-firmware 5.98 all Linux firmware

Maybe you newer kernel needs some of these packages for not crashing on you?

thank you for your reply. I don't have access to third-party hardware. First, make sure that the software system is stable and try to access other hardware and drivers. My current position is Debian_stretch

I tried it again and again today.

Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img    Armbian_5.90_Orangepi-r1_Debian_buster_next_4.19.57.img

Stability is still said in the past.

But I need to build the system myself. The current build script is the latest Armbian_5.98_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.79.img

Did you try to run the armbian-image without additional software or patches from your buid-script?

The kernel error does show that the system was unable to page in virtual memory (from virtual memory module zram).

What do you add with your script to the standard image - maybe that is to much for the 256MB of ram the OPi R1 has?

The kernel error does show that the system was unable to page in virtual memory (from virtual memory module zram).

What do you add with your script to the standard image - maybe that is to much for the 256MB of ram the OPi R1 has?

When I use Armbian mirror site to download Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img does not access third-party hardware. Nor does it install other redundant software, and kernel crashes occur, but not so often.

This kernel I am crashing information from 4.19.38 to 4.19.62.

@guidol: Here is the picture you requested.

My standoff skrews look a bit diffrent compared to the ones you used.

I also added a bit of tape between the coil ant the ethernet port is has contact to.

IMG_20191028_093500_2.thumb.jpg.43b9f214b5060da4d831717806f8a550.jpg

It is powered by the 3Amp Power Supply supplied by Orange Pi.

After starting over with a fresh build I tried syncthing instead of Nextcloud.

Not exactly doing the same thing, but good enough to use it as a phone backup cloud.

Was hitting some errors when large amounts of pictures were synchronized.

This happens if I add a new phone to the cloud:

Tried a few things to figure out the issue:

Lowered CPU frequency to 648MHz.

Tested RAM with memtester.

Wrote a few gigabyte to the msata SSD via dd.

Switched from eth0 to usb ethernet.

--> All with nothing looking problematic. Say - it all worked without errors.

Then watched htop while adding a new larger folder to the sync cloud --> System looked frozen (Actually was just terrible slow).

htop looked like this indicating that I was running out of memory:

pi@orangepi:~$ htop

Added a 512M swap file to the SSD. Now it seems to run stable.

because of my high standoff-screws I had not to add tape to the coil :) , but I had to add some Arduino-connector-extension :(

As I wrote to @yuanyunlong his kernel-exceptions could also be low ram if there is any additional software running.
Maybe he also should try to add swap-space?

thank you for your reply.
According to your instructions, does it mean that I am trying to replace the 512M Orange pi-r1?

Then I use 256M Orange pi-r1, Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img Image Is there insufficient memory when no other software is installed?

When I look at r1 with the mysql service, it is indeed swp full.

thank you for your reply.

Currently, the health of another board is not verified.

This is another board, no other extra software is installed.

:(

Still crashing when I restart

No . you dont have to replace the OPi R1. If you use the mysql service, you should add more swap-space/virtual memory.

It looks like 256MB real + 120MB isnt enough to handle this task reliable.

But there could be your problem also.... did you try another (better/newer/faster) MicroSD card or another stronger Power-Supply?

If your card has problems then it could crash while using virtual memory or even make the kernel-exceptions if the card has problems while writing and the filesystem is corrupted after restart and could make kernel exceptions.

Or your power-supply doesnt give enough power while writing to the card.

When no other software is installed (like mysql) then 256MB should be enough to run stable and also to restart properly.

My R1 with newer armbian and some small additional software (like FTP-Server) does use less than 80MB after bootup and it does restart properly every time:
armbianmonitor -u
System diagnosis information will now be uploaded to http://ix.io/203a

I will download https://dl.armbian.com/orangepi-r1/archive/Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.7z
and check if my OPi R1 will reboot properly with this image ;)

alright, thank you very much.

I am not concerned about whether I have mysql installed or not. If it is a software problem, I can find other ways to optimize it.

What hurts me is that the system crashes when no other software is installed. After the system is stable, I will do the next step to install the software.

I have already prepared two steps.

1. Replace R1 of 512M.
2. Replace the new MicroSD TF card (16G)

The Orange Pi R1 is only available with 256MB:
http://www.orangepi.org/OrangePiR1/

Memory (SDRAM): 256MB DDR3 (shared with GPU)

Only the NanoPI R1 is available with 512Mb or 1Gb of Ram ;)
https://www.friendlyarm.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=69&product_id=248

Iam using SanDisk Ultra or Samsung EVO Cards Class 10 (mostly 16GB but sometimes 8 - 32GB)

512MB is available for the Orange Pi Zero. In case you do not need the 2nd Ethernet port. Other thhan that the R1 and the Zero are basically identical.

With nothing installed the system should be stable though. At least mine was until I started doing things that are a bit too much for the 256MB Ram.

As already suggested:

- Try a different power supply.

- Try a different SD card.

Those 2 things are most critical to most SBCs.

I started to like SBCs that come with barrel plugs instead of micro sd for power.

Also industrial sd cards are not much more expensive compared to consumer cards, but should be a bit more robust.

If the size of the board is not critical and you can choose, go for the OrangePi One instead of Zero. Better voltage regulator, HDMI output, no (broken-by-design) wireless and costs the very same as even a dollar less than the OPi Zero with 512MB.

However this board does NOT support powering through microUSB. You have to use a barrel plug (or the pin header) to power it up.

No problem and no kernel panic on my R1 with ARMBIAN 5.83 stable Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 4.19.38-sunxi ;)

OPi_R1_fresh_4_19_38.jpg

awesome!
I have replaced a better TF card. It runs normally for one day, and during the reboot, it does not find the kernel crash. It feels amazing

image.png.97e8a40089c0666946f8f3d70436ed77.png

Next I will check the Swp issue again.

Yes, I remembered it wrong before. The Orange Pi R1 is only 256M of memory.
For the NanoPi R1, it is not currently considered. Although its configuration is very high. But I see that it does not open up the redundant GPIO interface. Used for my access urat

Thank you very much for your reply.
I also have other projects that are using Zero. It is very stable at the moment.
The problem with R1 seems to have been found. thank you very much.

Yes, I have abandoned the microUSB interface in the follow-up development. I have used a syringe plug.

I am using the latest armbian build script version 5.99 to build the debian Stretch kernel version update to 4.19.81

Burning into the TF card starts normally.

Looks like this version fixes the previous problem.

Building a new system with the armbian build program The support for R1 is still not very friendly.

Build with the armbian 5.99 version of the program
Armbian_5.99_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.81.img
A kernel crash message will still appear after the restart operation.
and
Armbian_5.83_Orangepi-r1_Debian_stretch_next_4.19.38.img
It is very stable.

I am getting the error message again on 5.99

The query may be the cause of a driver. Because this is convenient, I am not very proficient.
I will see the chance again.
The name of the R1 NIC driver under armbian5.83 is

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0bda:8152 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

The name of the R1 NIC driver under armbian5.99 is

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0bda:8152 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8152 Fast Ethernet Adapter

I guess again, will it be the error caused by the NIC driver?
