I have X96 MAX. I download, burn and start Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_buster_current_5.7.15.img.xz from micro sd card. Internal storage is not found in kernel messages but when I try with Armbian_20.02.0-rc1.037_Aml-s9xxx_buster_current_5.5.0-rc6_desktop_20200205.img.xz I see all storage's (internal and external) and installation is ok.

I don't know way when I'm starting from Armbian_20.02.0-rc1.037_Aml-s9xxx_buster_current_5.5.0-rc6_desktop_20200205.img.xz showed memory is 3.2GB but when I start from Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_buster_current_5.7.15.img.xz showed memory is 3.6GB?

AFAIK, it has hisilicon hi3798mv100 which is a armv7

Regarding Linux on this box, i have found on chinese forum, someone managed to install Ubuntu 16.04 using serial console and hitool. But the sad news is, it uses ancient kernel 3.10

Hi @sengsu: Could you please give me the link about this successfull attempt? rightnow I had soldered the male header pin successfully. But just need a direction.

It is not a fact that you can use the UART console to activate multi-loading. The manufacturer could block the startup process from being interrupted in u-boot, in which case you will only be able to see the startup process itself.

@balbes150: It seems you are right. USB TTL does not work when the bootloader is locked by the firmware. Is there anyway to brick the bootloader forcefully?

For EC6108v9, I had soldered the male header pin, then connected the USB TTL (prolific 2303) to the pin:

GND - GND, TXD-RX, RXD-TX

Then I tried:

- ls /dev/ttyUSB*

   /dev/ttyUSB0

- sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200

Then I just got a Blank Screen.

I also tried using putty in serial connection, but I got a blank screen (black) using /dev/ttyUSB0 at 115200

Does this means that it is blocked by the firmware?

Build on Windows 10 WSL2.

I was able to build the image from source code on Build-Armbian on Windows 10 (WSL2) Ubuntu 18.04.

Used NO_APT_CACHER=yes and cloned the folder in ~/. Had multiple build failures without these settings.

Thought I would share, just in case if someone is interested to use this environment to build images.

hi, you can see here and use google translate if you dont understand chinese  :

http://www.hdpfans.com/thread-826810-1-1.html

if you already successfully download the file and other source code from pan baidu,  i hope you can reupload it to mega or other site, so people outside china mainland can try it too.

Actually I am not interested in the file. But I am interested in the process of how the uploader achieved it. It seems ubuntu 16 does not work well in this box based on the uploader description from Google Translate. There is no step by step as well on how to burn the image from Hitool. Which makes the process more complicated.

I am thinking that if somehow we can brick this box and force it to read the SD Card. That might trigger Armbian to boot. But I don't know how to brick it forcefully.

To be Honest, I really like how U-boot magically works in Allwinner by re-writing "u-boot.img" to the SD Card. How I wish to have such procedure for Amlogic

hi @balbes150, nanopc T4 freezes with the latest build 2020.08.21, Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.16.img.xz . I can reproduce it by writing zeros to a USB2 HDD. The USB HDD works well on other systems.

tty@arm-64:/storage/upload$ dd if=/dev/zero of=./test_io bs=1M status=progress
2585788416 bytes (2.6 GB, 2.4 GiB) copied, 122 s, 21.2 MB/spacket_write_wait: Connection to 192.168.1.183 port 22: Broken pipe

The same applies to USB3 HDD.

tty# dd if=/dev/zero of=./test_io bs=1M status=progress
2681208832 bytes (2.7 GB, 2.5 GiB) copied, 53 s, 50.6 MB/spacket_write_wait: Connection to 192.168.1.183 port 22: Broken pipe

tty# dd if=/dev/zero of=./test_io bs=1M status=progress
2637168640 bytes (2.6 GB, 2.5 GiB) copied, 53 s, 49.8 MB/spacket_write_wait: Connection to 192.168.1.183 port 22: Broken pipe

I checked kern.log after reset, there's no abnormal logs.

One interesting thing is that it ALWAYS dies after writing ~2.5GB. The actual data written out is ~1.9G. My board has 4G memory. It dies earlier if I write to NTFS partition, ~1.2G.

Any help/comments on my question? In the meantime was able to successfully boot my X92 with Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.16_desktop.img.xz. Sound playing over HDMI out of the box. Bluetooth not working (was working in the bionic build). Wifi working. Memory, CPU, diskspace reporting correctly. GPU not working. (Read about panfrost lima but no clue how to install). Liking my journey with Armbian. Thanks all the developers.

Is there a specific distro to install (even dated) to operate the "midi"?

Which image and dtb are you using ? I am unable to make it work . I have tried with almost all gxm dtb but it freezes on H96Pro logo .

Thanks. You are awesome. Meanwhile in the focal build running on x92 3 + 32 saw that desktop was not showing up on my tv though boot scroll and shut down scroll was visible. Didn't face the same issue with computer monitor. Think there is an issue during display protocol negotiation during changeover to desktop. Changed the display frequency to 60hz which my tv supports in the display settings. Problem resolved.

The new version of images 20200814.

Please note that the algorithm for initial configuration of the system for startup has changed. Instead of a file "uEnv.txt", the file "/extlinux/extlinux.conf " is now used. The rules for editing a file remain the same.

All Amlogic models now need the "u-boot.ext" file.

Before launching on Amlogic, you must copy or rename one of the existing files "u-boot-*" to "u-boot.ext".

For s905 (not X) - used u-boot-s905

For s905x and s912 - used u-boot-s905x-s912

For s905x2 and s922 - used u-boot-s922

For g12a\g12b models, a single file is now used (files u-boot.sd and u-boot.usb now replaces one u-boot-s922 file).

don't understand this, do we have to create one more file?

Hello.
Tell me how to install Armbian so that it boots from eMMC on my TV-box x92 3/16?
With SD, Armbian loads and works well for me, I want it to work from eMMC on the set-top box, but I can't find a suitable instruction for my build version.
I have Armbian_20.02.0-rc1.038_Aml-s9xxx_eoan_current_5.5.0-rc6_desktop_20200205.img
I use meson-gxm-q201.dts, with which everything works great (except for the indicator on the front panel  and not sound).
Installing via armbian-config does not work, in the "system" section there is no item "install to eMMC, NAND, SATA & USB"

Explain how can I put Armbian on eMMC?

I'm unable to make this work. I have what I believe is some random generic box (this one), with an Amlogic S905X. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, or perhaps I'm missing a step or something. This is what I do:

1- Burn Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.16_desktop.img.xz into a MicroSD with rufus.

2- In the BOOT partition, modify the 'extlinux.conf' and comment out everything except 'FDT /dtb/amlogic/meson-gxl-s905x-p212.dtb' and the APPEND that is there below (I honestly don't know how this thing works, I don't know if I have to change something or even if I should use it, sometimes I left it out with no difference).

3- Renamed the 'u-boot-s905x-912' into 'u-boot.ext'.

When I try to boot the SD card in the tv box nothing happens, I go directly to the Android system. I have another SD card with 'Alexelec' that boots fine. This box doesn't have a reset button, I tried flashing 'aml_autoscript' but it says 'error' after rebooting.

What I'm missing?

Regards!

Has anybody here had success with running Single Armbian Image on RK3399 Orange Pi 4?

I tried using the latest image with revised procedure using extlinux. There are two dtb available in rockchip folder.

1. rk3399-orangepi-4.dtb. No HDMI with this image.

2. rk3399-orangepi.dtb. HDMI works only on 1024x728 resolution and no sound.

The startup screen and u-boot messages with both screen were hazy and jumbled.

If anybody here had got this working, let me know if these are the correct dtb files?

Thanks

I assume a normal reset in the Android system wouldn't work, right? Because firmwares for these kind of boxes are usually non-existent, and I don't have any backup.

Hooray put it on eMMC, thanks to balbes150 for his work!
However, with the sound question, the image I use does not have a file gx_sound.sh there is only g12_sound.sh,
but is it suitable for GXM? or where to get gx_sound.sh?

Hello, I have a bunch of services already installed (also ssh host keys, etc). Is there the possibility to upgrade my S905 5.3 kernel to 5.7 without reflashing image? I started with Armbian_5.90_Aml-s905_Debian_buster_default_5.1.0_20190701 and was able to update to 5.3 branch

Hello
I ran Armbian from the SD card image:
Armbian_20.06.0_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.6_desktop_20200630.img.xz
for Mecool m8s pro W (amlogics905x)
When installing to eMMC, I chose the install_aml_emmc.sh script and restarted the system after installing it. Unfortunately, from now on, the box does not work with the emmc or the SD card (only black screen on the HDMI output)

In previous experiments with this box and Armbian, I usually installed the system on the box with the install_aml.sh script and everything worked fine - I just have no idea why I chose a different script this time?!?!?

I tried to start the box with the reset pressed, but without a positive result.
Is there a chance to rescue the box?
