Hey @NicoD,

Thank you for your note, I never tested the Legacy images, i will give them a try, but I am not happy with that :(

The alternative to that right now seems to be using a fixed frequency. I personally have been using the "userspace" governor with min and max set to 1416000 and had no crashes at all since I started using those!

Is there some update or a walkaround you know?

The current status last I read seemed to me that people are currently testing and looking for a solution.  I think it's a regression introduced by newer kernel or something like that.  You can find more info in this other thread which is about desktop however there seems to be a lot of RK3399 specific discussion starting at the post I linked.

Best thing you could do at this point is familiarize yourself with the discussion / issue, perhaps try and modify dtb and other things if you are capable, if not just follow along and give additional testing when more advanced users eventually post their solutions.  Because the evidence becomes much stronger if testing has been done by multiple people to confirm results (instead of jut one person).

Also, if you don't own a UART yet, you probably should to get one (or more) on their way to you in the mail.  They are only couple bucks apiece, and IMO anyone who play with SBC should own at least one!

EDIT: NicoD advice a few posts up (use legacy kernel) or Pedro Lamas' may be best in this case.  I did not read it until after posting.  Understand that as a Mod I read almost everything that is posted, so I end up with shallow (therefore sometimes wrong) understanding on a wide variety of topics.  lol  Don't mind me, carry on.  Some of general ideas in my post still apply, however, so I leave those.  Cheers.

I tried this, and it seemed to be working. I set max to 1800000 and userspace and 1h30m no crashes.
I then put to performance and it crashed within 5 minutes of changing it. Kernel 5.9.11

Really strange since I've got another image running stable with performance and at 2Ghz. No I'll not update it :)
Update : Userspace and 2Ghz crashed... I'll try performance and 1.8Ghz...

With performance governor at 1.8Ghz it's now been stable for 50 minutes browsing and playing video.

@IgorThe default images for NanoPi M4 is legacy while for other RK3399's its mainline(M4V2 and others...).
Wouldn't it be better to change it to legacy for all rk3399's until this issue has been solved?
I've also gotten emails from my viewers that they've been angered by the crashes. They don't seem to know to choose for legacy.

I've no idea why it does this. I suspect panfrost. So I'll build an image without panfrost. Tho I'm running an image on the M4V2 with panfrost and at 2Ghz. Also had the crashes whith ondemand governor. Not with performance. While now it happens on the M4 with performance and 2Ghz.

dmesg is giving a crapload of messages even with 1.8Ghz. Many about panfrost.

Isn't disabled by default on Armbian?

It doesn't seem so. Enabled by default. It's a downloaded image from backups. It was 5.8.6 but upgraded to 5.9.11.
I'll double check tomorrow.
I'll let it do a stability test all night with 1.42Ghz all cores and userspace governor. It seems it gets more stable the lower the clock-frequency. But seems to have gotten worse the last days. It used to be usable.

@IgorPanfrost is indeed activated by default. Newly downloaded https://redirect.armbian.com/region/EU/nanopim4/Focal_current_desktop
Only did update and installed mesa-utils. No upgrade.

Weird thing is that the repo for the mesa drivers isn't in the repo list. So it can't update the driver.
I'll update the driver and do stability tests.

This is the repo

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

Still crashes with the driver update and ondemand governor. Also with performance and 2Ghz.
Many errors in dmesg, not only panfrost related. But I'm about sure the panfrost driver is the cause of the crashes.

Spoiler

After last nights test it didn't fully crash on 1.42Ghz. But my test programs were closed, and wifi was gone. So it clearly was not ok. It was running for +13hours.

Update : It was a mesa bug that produced the crashes.
RK3399 is now back stable with latest updates. Even at 2Ghz and ondemand governor.
But not all problems are fixed yet with mesa/panfrost. The errors in dmesg are still there. And some things that use panfrost will not work.
Mesa has had a major update to version 20.2.4. So if you need panfrost, best to use mesa 20.2.3. https://docs.mesa3d.org/relnotes/20.2.4.html
You can also download the old version of Armbian Reforged with mesa 20.2.3. But be sure not to upgrade for the moment.

Excellent work @NicoD, does that mean one can now create a PR to improve this and submit to the Armbian repo?

It isn't an Armbian thing.
It should be in this repo, if you don't have it, add it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

I still have questions on how and why Panfrost is enabled by default on the latest images.
And it seems to be missing the graphics repo. @Igor Do you have info on that? Or maybe @JMCC

As a side note, if I get to work on mainline multimedia integration, one of the goals would be to fix the xorg.conf files. I haven't tinkered much with it so far, IIRC latest x server enables the panfrost-modesetting driver by default if no other driver is set.

Don't know. It shouldn't be. Also that repository should be in there. But its in there if you build image from a desktop branch and select 3D support.

Not sure how much it matters or not, but I thought best to point out that I'm actually running Debian Buster and not Ubuntu Focal, plus I run my Nanopi M4V2 completely headless (no screen connected to it) and still experienced the crashes while using the "ondemand" governor.

I've only tried a few hours without crashes and after doing update/upgrade. I couldn't do that yesterday at all. Also using Firefox crashed it every time and now not.
The problem of ondemand governor is unrelated tho to the mesa issue. They might have worked together in decreasing stability since it was more stable at lower clocks but not fully.
What kernel version are you using? Are you using a server image? What does dmesg say? or armbianmonitor -u

I'll do more tests tomorrow.

Here's my most current armbianmonitor output: http://ix.io/2HmF

There's a few things springing out.

17.643595] panfrost ff9a0000.gpu: clock rate = 500000000
[ 17.688112] panfrost ff9a0000.gpu: mali-t860 id 0x860 major 0x2 minor 0x0 status 0x0

[ 17.723351] cdc_acm 7-1.3:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

And at the end you've got

[ 20.317067] systemd-journald[684]: Received request to flush runtime journal from PID 1

So even the server images have panfrost enabled??? Very strange.
The other seems to point to a storage problem I think?

All makes my head hurt.
Has this always been this way on mainline? I'm still using legacy for my daily needs. I was not very aware of the issues on mainline.

All images for a certain board share the same kernel.  After all, a desktop image is just a server image in which you install Xfce and the rest of the desktop apps.

However, panfrost should not give any trouble if you are not using any graphical application. But if you want to disable it anyway, just add a line like this:

blacklist panfrost

to a newly created file

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-panfrost.conf
