nanoPC-T4: trying to enable eDP LCD display

FriendlyELEC sells an 11.6inch eDP FHD LCD Display with Capacitive Touch for the nanoPC-T4. I'm trying my hardest to get it working with Armbian. Unfortunately, Armbian doesn't seem to detect the display:

It works in the stock lubuntu image they provide so I'm trying to gather as much configuration information as I can from lubuntu to see what I need to do to get it working.

I want to try a few different experiments.. I have a kernel.img file from lubuntu that I'd like to try booting with Armbian but I don't understand uboot very well and simply copying the kernel.img file to /boot under the same name as the existing vmlinuz file seemed to only brick the install (even after I copied back the old image). Is there a way to properly get uboot to boot that image with Armbian?

 

Here's what I've gotten so far from lubuntu configuration:

Armbian with modern 5.8.y kernel? Or Armbian with legacy 4.4.y kernel? 

With modern kernel serious work might be involved and can be (for sure it is) far from adding just a kernel parameter. Since we don't have displays nor resources to support them, we can't proceed into this direction. We use the same kernel as on stock images https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/sources/families/rk3399.conf#L10 ... this display might just work the same way, but can't verify ... In legacy builds with kernel 4.4.y only.

Sorry should've mentioned. I'm using the legacy kernel. Though it doesn't detect the display with either one :/

After a bunch of experiments I WAS able to get the LCD to work with Armbian!..... using lubuntu's bootloader.  The problem has been narrowed down to uboot then.  If you could give me any ideas on getting it to work with Armbian's bootloader that'd be great.

Here's what I did for anyone who wants to follow:

  1. Edit Armbian buildscripts to add kernel.img to the kernel build targets (could also just set KERNEL_IMAGE_TYPE="Image kernel.img") and have it copy the resulting kernel.img file to output/images.
  2. Once the desktop sd image is built, run:
    # this will setup the image on one of the loopback devices, for example /dev/loop0
    losetup --partscan --find --show output/images/Armbian_20.11.0-trunk*.img
    # create rootfs.img
    dd if=/dev/loop0p1 of=./rootfs.img
    losetup -d /dev/loop0

    3. keep those files rootfs.img and kernel.img for later and run:

    git clone https://github.com/friendlyarm/sd-fuse_rk3399.git
    cd sd-fuse_rk3399
    wget http://112.124.9.243/dvdfiles/RK3399/images-for-eflasher/lubuntu-desktop-images.tgz
    tar xvzf lubuntu-desktop-images.tgz

    4. replace the kernel.img and rootfs.img files in the newly created lubuntu/ folder with the files made earlier from the armbian build
    5. run './mk-sd-image.sh lubuntu'

    The newly created lubuntu image will actually boot armbian with the SAME root filesystem and the SAME kernel as the image created by the armbian build scripts - only the lcd works in this case.

    I'm not exactly sure why, but it *might* have something to do with the friendly-elec splash image that comes up immediately in the lubuntu loader. This is a diff of the output of dmesg between the two images (again the lubuntu bootloader works, armbian bootloader does not):

You maybe need to change "enable-gpios = <&gpio4 RK_PD5 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;" to pin which is dedicated to backlight on you board.

To Linux kernel boot argument add "video=eDP-1:1920x1080@60" and remove other "video=HDMI..." parts. I changed mine bootargs in GRUB but similar can be achieved in uboot.

 

Didn't try X11 with it and I didn't manage to get early boot messages on eDP panel (yet). But after booting I get login prompt and I can login on it.

Linux 5.10.12 (linux-image-current-rockchip64 on Armbian 21.02).

Has anyone gotten this to work?  I have not.  When added to my decompiled dtb, the dts snippet above gives syntax errors which I haven't been able to figure out. 

 

One for the gpio enable, which looks OK to me. 

 

Then, if I comment `gpio enable` then `&edp` is an error.  My understanding is that & is a reference, so I'm not sure how it can be used on the left.

I looked at the add script but didn' t see anything obviously helpful.

So Im hesitant to push it forward.

 

I'm not against installing to nvme to try it, but booting from nvme is

another thing I havent tackled yet, and Im not sure its even possible.

 

I tried installing Arch to the nanopc-t4 following tmountain' s explanation,

but booting from nvme had other problems. I was never able to make it work.

From what I've been able to figure out, DT overlays are not available on

some images.  The nanopc-t4 being one of them.

 

I tried installing root to nvme, which it seemed to do, but other than

copying it to the drive, armbian-install didnt do anything about mounts

or boot, so nothing actually changed.   But I think it doesnt matter.

 

overlays dont work on this board, unless we can work around it manually.

I had some problems getting the files over. I have them now.

Put the proper UUID into boot.cmd.   

The overlay is applying, but not working. It booted with no problems, looking

for errors and warnings still.

I tried it both with and without hdmi plugged in. No edp either way.

I tried this overlay.
