I tried to run a tiny Minecraft Server on Orange Pi One. Unplayable.

Just wanted to save some time of a person who will think of trying to do this.

It crashes all the time with acceptable settings. With a tiny world and minimal server settings(and disabled watchdog), it works but it's unplayable. Server can't keep up even with a free falling player.

I have heatsinks and fan on the pi so I don't think it's about throttling. I think this CPU is insufficient for this task.

I think you would need GPU/OpenGL support. Based on searching the forum for the word 'minecraft' and ending up here: http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/1420-opengl-on-mali-gpu-bananapi-orangepi-pc-etc/

According to Release Changelog the new libglshim1 package should add this capability soon (but to be honest: I have no clue about GPU, OpenGL or games at all :) )

No, server part needs

  • Lots of free RAM
  • Enough CPU power
  • Acceptable storage read/write speed
  • Proper JDK version installed
  • Proper memory reservation parameters for JVM to work with such small memory

Especially Vanilla server, third-party alternatives like Spigot may work better

I've written a small tutorial (in German but you should understand the commands) and tested it on an Orange Pi PC (Spigot). It was no heavenly joy but at least I would say if you want to play with one or two friends it is possible.

Alternatively I tried cuberite and I would say it was better and it's not that hard to set up.
