Banana PI M2+ does not boot after power cycle

Wanninger

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new here, and first of all I want to greet you.

Last week I got a brand new Banana PI M2+, and tried to install the latest armbian Image on SD card.

So far so good, but the M2+ is not booting from SD card. Except I short press the uBoot button followed

by the reset button.

This means I only get the board booted after a power cycle, if I press the uBoot button before.

Then I tried to boot the board from NAND, but it is the same. It only boots from NAND, if I press the uBoot

button before. (Installed to NAND before, of course)

To verfy that I do not have any hardware issue, I downloaded a original Banana PI M2+ Image from the

Banana-pi site, and installed it to SD card and also to NAND, and in both cases, the Board is booting perfectly.

So I hope you can help me with this...

Thanks a lot   -Wanninger

True. Power on -> it hangs here and pushing reset is enough to boot properly.

Hmm o.k. I understand.

What can I do now, or whats next?

You can investigate, collect additional info, actively help to solve this problem or wait ... I already did some investigation but haven't found any obvious cause of this.

I have Armbian 5.23 (upgraded from 5.20) booting fine from SD card and 5.20 booting fine from eMMC.

The only thing to note it that the upgrade process is not creating the uImage lnk and i have to do it manually.

Since i do have to tweak my own script.bin here  i suspect you have a broken script.bin or a new revision board. I have rev 1.1 maybe you have newer.

Your board boots normally on power on? BTW: mine is also rev 1.1

Yes.

Important note: I lost a day to find out you must have HDMI plugged in (image is headless), i think it is related to the problem,

Anyway, mine (using an old - 3 month old - boot loader) restart without problem if I use reboot or do a proper shutdown.

But if it crash for whatever reason, I need to disconnect anything AND wait some times (discharge? cooling?). This doesn't help to make tests or be sure of anything. And much more as it is in production, headless, unattended. Bad pick ...

@Igor

...just came one small step forward.

I figured out, that all tested current Images stopp booting after loading the USB system.

So I recompiled boot.scr with the kernelparameter "nousb", and the boot procedure ran

completely normal up to Login screen. Only one issue, the tested system began to reboot

a few minutes after start.

Perhaps this helps you

Edit: This problem also exists on Banana PI Linux-Images, except the Banana Pi Android-Image.

@lvmc

sorry, but I am also a "customer" like you.

The only thing I found out yet, is the USB issue from post #16.

But I don't know whether or not it is helpful for Igor, to solve the problem.

He hasn't commented the post #16 yet, so I don't know anything.

Perhaps, it would be helpful to open a new thread in a banana pi forum,

because their linux images (kernels) have the same issue!?

@Wanninger, @Igor, @tkaiser: Could you please help me on one test?

Try to simulate the issue without connecting HDMI cable to boot the OS. Here when I don't plug the HDMI and connect it only after some time power is connected, problem seems to be gone.

It is working with compiled from source Armbian 5.20 and also Armbian 5.20 with apt-upgrade to 5.23.

This board has some problems :)

BTW: It also crashes at restart (i checked few other h3 boards and they don't), kernel 4.9.0 (built hour ago) this way:

@Igor, what have you changed? It seems to present the same behavior as before...

Dev u-boot. I saw some changes which might be related and I can't reproduce this error. I made at least 20 reboots, power off / on, waited hours, power on. Working good.

The only other change is that I am using stronger power supply from Cubieboard 4.

@Igor, something interesting... using this latest image (I only tested with it for now)... if I both plug power sup barrel (5V@2A or 5V@2.5A) + another power supply connected to microUSB, it seems to be stable... I'm testing.
