Trying to connect using Orange Pi PC Plus WiFi module results in a kernel panic

I'm trying to use the WiFi module included with the Orange Pi PC Plus, when I try connect to a WiFi network (using just iwconfig and 'ifconfig wlan0 up') it doesn't connect, resulting in a kernel panic.

All packages are updated. I'm also connected via Ethernet, I can disable it and try using the serial port if its necessary.

I "fixed" this installing NetworkManager and using it for handling the connection. I dunno what is causing the kernel panic otherwise.
