OrangePi plus 2E mainline kernel

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new with OrangePi plus 2E which I bought after I have great fun with several Raspberrys.

In first moment I was very disappointed with software and documentation, than I found Armbian.

Well, on all of my boards and computers I run Ubuntu, so I choose Armbian Ubuntu desktop edition.

With legacy kernel everything runs good, but I prefer mainline kernel, and there I run into the problem.

I have no video output on HDMI. I tried nightly build of Armbian and updated legacy desktop edition.

Same result, no video over HDMI.

Googling about this gives me lot of confusing results so I decide to ask here.

Is video over HDMI on OrangePi plus 2E possible with mainline kernel at this moment?

Do I miss something?

Thanks.

Yes. Mainline kernel is still in development and come without end user support. Currently there are problems with screen detection / video driver. It used to work fine, but currently it's just broken ... dunno why exactly, but AFAIK @jernej is working on this.  "tomorrow" this will be fixed and some other problem might jump out but we are getting close. For certain scenarios is o.k. for some time.

Even with fixed video, there are other limitations on new kernel - no video or 3D acceleration.

Igor, thank you very much for fast response.

Well, I feel better now because I didn't nothing wrong.

Sadly, when I picked which board to buy, OPi+2E looked best buy, and there was lot of "comaprisons" over the web which claimed that mainline kernel runs on this board.

Typical chinese storry I guess.

Mainline works, I'm using it for a project myself (driving a large P2314T touchscreen), just don't expect to play GPU intensive video games on it. Its a $35 board that has eMMC, much better I/O and a decently designed SoC, short of the BeagleBoneBlack there really isn't a much better board to buy in this space with these features when it comes to full, libre support, especially if you are on a budget.

If you want a minimal Debian build with kernel 4.10, I have one kicking around. HDMI is fully working! Alternatively, just wait a few days for the driver updates to land. These volunteers are working as fast as they can, can't blame 'em.

By the way, a friend of mine is working on building Armbian as a service, whereby you can build Armbian images with the packages/scripts you want included from the getgo (for easy mass deployment/initial setup), it may be of use soon.

@Igor unfortunately, Armbian uses my first version of the driver, which means that it should work flawlessly. Yesterday on irc discussion was about new version of the driver. I can only make it work on monitors I have and both drivers work with both of them...

Well, I tried to build desktop image with Igors script Built it successfully, but still no image on monitor (Asus ProArt, full HD 1080p/1080i).

But, with legacy 3.4 image, it works "out of box".

Run out of ideas. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have serial converter at this time.

Giving up :(

On both images (legac, mainline). according serial console log HDMI is detected  1920x1200.

Fresh legacy image then starts with lower resolution, then I need to use h3disp to set higher resolution (ie. 1080p@60)

On mainline image there is not signal on HDMI, empty screen. I tried to build both desktop images (Debian,  Ubuntu), with same result allways.

:(:(:(

It happened to me few times but it worked after soft reboot.

To be honest, it is not clear to me how to force video mode.

I tried to do this changing and recompiling /boot/boot.cmd without success.

I guess that I need change DTB somehow, but from available documentation I can't figure out how.

Stopped u-boot over serial console. Tried many kind of "setenv"... No luck. :(

Two things are important here:

1. You need to set edid=0

2. When you save u-boot environment, you need to issue reset to boot u-boot into new setting.

Works for me.

Yeees, finally did it. Sucessfully set resolution to 1024x768-24.

Now I'm going to find more appropriate resolution.

Thank you Igor very much, I almost gave up.

Well, now another issue pops up.

Working resolution is saved to u-boot environment and everithing is ok. Until update.

After update, same old story. Connect serial console... etc.

Where u-boot store environment? I would like save it, and rtestore it after update is done, to avoid hacking over and over.

Well, we erase environment on install by purpose, since problems might occur when upgrading from some very old version. With hack - add commands to store environment into your boot script, the same as you typo into u-boot console (without reset). This way your settings will be saved to your environment on each boot.

We can make this erase conditional and based on old u-boot version, so at least for the future upgrades environment will be preserved.

Putting setenv with working configuration followed with saveenv in the beginning of the boot script really works. It just need two reboots after update.

So, from my point of view... problem solved.

Thanks all for help, especially to Igor.

Hi Igor & IgorS

Glad you seem to have a solution,

I followed your conversation as I have the same problem : connect VGA screen to OrangePiPc 2, but I can not make a story out of what you are writing I'm too new to this. is there a way you could provide me with the list/script of the necessary commands so that I can fill in the (my) blanks.

Thanks in advance

Peter
