OrangePi Plus 2e fails to boot - stuck at "loading ramdisk"

Recommended Posts

OrangePi Plus 2e. Used Etcher to write Armbian_5.38_Orangepiplus2e_Debian_stretch_next_4.14.14.img to an Evo+ 32GB. Connected via USB serial (putty).

Boot process hangs loading the ramdisk:

I have previously had this plus2e working (on an older legacy kernel image from 2016/7 - can't recall which one). I thought I might have done a nandinstall on that image, but booting with no SD card gives:

Any ideas what is wrong and what I can do to diagnose/fix?

This is not an Armbian fingerprint. This is something that was preinstalled, Android probably and since it also doesn't work ... problem is elsewhere.  First, do some reading here:

Agreed - this is from the "no SD card installed" bootlog, so is probably the pre-installed Android on the emmc; I only included that because I thought it might provide some useful additional information - apologies for any confusion.

I'm not trying to fix the emmc nand-install -- just trying to get it booting with latest armbian from sdcard.  Once that is working I may do a nand install, but I need to get it booting first ;-) !

The first bootlog is the one with latest armbian mainline kernel image (Armbian_5.38_Orangepiplus2e_Debian_stretch_next_4.14.14.img), booting from the Evo+, which shows it hanging at the "loading ramdisk" stage. Is there anything there that indicates what might be going wrong?

Thanks for the pointers.

Does the fact that it fails to boot from the Android presinstalled image on emmc means that its not (just) an SD card issue? SD card was tested with h2testw. Image was burnt with etcher (on Win10), using a USB3 Transcend SD/MMC/CF adapter. I can try to get hold of another sdcard and try that too.

Power is from 3A PSU (bought with the plus2e), which has decently thick cable and barrel connector. Nothing connected to USB or video ports on plus2e. What's the best way to check whether I might have a power issue? I have a (digital) multimeter.

edit: 3A not 2A PSU (according to the printing on the case, at least!)

Yes. Board can have hardware defects and in such case, there is nothing we can do.

Try some stock image and some of those https://dl.armbian.com/orangepiplus2e/nightly/

Remember to attach HDMI as well since I am not sure where is default console and wait long enough. Resizing of some big and slow cards can take some time.

HDMI attached now but no fb output visible during boot. Where in the bootlog sequence does the resizing occur?

With a different sdcard (generic 32GB, h2testw passed just now at 17MBps write 60Mbps read):

At this point it appears to stop; the HDMI output shows top ~80% of screen black and bottom ~20% solid white.

With the original Evo+ (just retested with h2testw - 21MBps write 76MBps read) and Armbian_5.59.180815_Orangepiplus2e_Ubuntu_bionic_next_4.17.14.img get basically the same:

This is not an Armbian fingerprint. This is something that was preinstalled, Android probably and since it also doesn't work ... problem is elsewhere.  First, do some reading here:

https://forum.armbian.com/forum/31-sd-card-and-power-supply/

Thanks Igor -- for the benefit of anyone finding this thread in the future:

I checked voltage on the PSU and all seemed fine. However, I got a replacement PSU "just in case" (a 5V 3A UK plug wall wart off ebay, instead of the EU plug one that came with the OPi; just had to solder a 4/1.7mm barrel connector onto the cable) and miraculously with the new PSU the board now comes up fine!

Lesson learned: PSU quality is make or break with these boards, even when using a decent barrel connector. And the symptoms of dodgy power supply can be pretty random.

Thanks again
