For anyone else that runs into this via a search engine: If you run the wsl2 terminal as a profile in Windows Terminal (usually this is just called "Ubuntu"), it works. Not sure what terminal emulator the `wsl2` Start menu launch uses by default, but I guess it isn't Windows Terminal.
