      HEVC root cause found — it never worked, for anyone. Fix is on the dev branch, verified bit-exact. Testers wanted.

      This might just work... @JFL — that log excerpt was exactly what was needed. Both problems are found, and both are mine, not your box's. Chrome (garbled → green). Your driver log shows the pattern on every frame: Chrome creates a 10-bit surface, exports it, and only then decodes into it. The driver decided "10-bit or 8-bit" from the last decoded frame — which didn't exist yet — so every export described your 10-bit surfaces as 8-bit NV12 (10bit=0 on all 11,983 of them). Chrome then read P010 pixels through an NV12 description: garbled, then green. The vaCreateSurfaces errors were Chrome allocating ever more surfaces because none of them yielded a usable frame. Firefox never hit it because it exports after decoding. Fixed in v2.1.5: a surface is described by the depth it was created with until a frame is decoded. Verified with a new test that exports a 10-bit surface before any decode (2.1.4: NV12; 2.1.5: P010 / R16+GR1616). mpv (software). Your vainfo line says it: Trying to open …/dri/panthor_drv_video.so. Your image runs the GPU on the mainline Panthor driver with kisak's Mesa 26, and libva names the VA driver after the render node's kernel driver — panthor — so it never looks for rockchip_drv_video.so. Firefox works because it opens a different node. v2.1.5 ships panthor_drv_video.so and panfrost_drv_video.so symlinks, so auto-detection just works; on any version LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=rockchip in the environment does the same. (Your LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=rockchip mpv … | grep … run probably did play in hardware — without -v, mpv prints nothing that matches that grep, so "no output" wasn't "didn't launch".) v2.1.5: https://github.com/defcom5-rockchip/rockchip-vaapi/releases/tag/v2.1.5. After installing: vainfo --display wayland | head -3 # should load the driver with no LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME set mpv -v --no-config --hwdec=vaapi "/media/jfl/writable/home/jfl/Videos/jellyfish-120-mbps-4k-uhd-hevc-10bit.mkv" 2>&1 | grep -E "Using hardware|VO:" and the Chrome command you used before. Both should be hardware now; if Chrome still misbehaves, the same RK_VAAPI_LOG counts (10bit=1 should now equal the number of exports) will tell. Thank you — the driver log with the frame-by-frame sequence is what cracked it.
