  1. dolphs's post in CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV option for nanopi-r4s kernel (possibly others) was marked as the answer   
    hmm once cable is attached it does report FTDI USB Serial Device converter is attached,
    however apcupsd does not want to comm. with my APC Back-UPS 650, so either Modular or compiled in does not resolve my issue.

    looks like this helped in the end: " rockpi-4a:~:# vnstat -i wg0 --update "
