fr3d
Good evening, last week they changed the electric meter in my building, but in order to do so they cut the power, and my Tinkerboard (the first model, the one issued back in 2017, Asus first's SBC), that I use as my "Save for later, and never look at it again" network folder, suffered. It continued to reboot from some kernel panic, which I forgot to take note; but since it hadn't been upgraded to jammy, I took the opportunity to do it. Pluging in the uSD card (with the newly released jammy version, just downloaded here), power, and all (including the ethernet cord!!), first boot I have to create my user (which, for some reasons refuses to let me put my usual fr3d tag, obliging me to go with the common "fred", but OK ), then all the trivial steps to set my locale settings. Then the beautiful armbian desktop penguin greats me. Nice now some more little custumisations and I'm ready to go, or so I thought; the wireless connection doesn't work, it fails to connect (and it is only 2m away from my router), it continues to ask me for the password, which has was not changed in the meantime. I tried nmtui But nothing change, well I only got the funny message Quote Secrets were not given....... I also tried to fix it by looking into armbian-config but nothing, after the third time, I get the same message about "secrets" not being given. I also tried installing "non-free" package, hoping it would find missing piece of software/firmware/driver to solve my issue, but as you can immagine it doesn't. And I also found out the "browser" can't be opened, as it gives me some kind of Input/output errors, yet if I scroll down to the internet program section, I can open firefox, and it seems (only used it for 1h, more or less) to be working properly. Would some good soul help me find a solution?? As soon as I'm able to send some screenshots i'll do it. Thanks in advance, fr3d Edited November 24, 2022 by fr3d little clarification
CryBaby
Is your router using RADIUS? https://www.spinics.net/lists/hostap/msg09840.html OpenSSL has disabled insecure old TLS auth which should have been fixed 10 years ago but it turns out not everyone has. Try updating your router firmware. Edited November 25, 2022 by CryBaby Spelling
fr3d
Hi @CryBaby, I have no idea. My router was provided by my ISP, and it's not easy to find any manual about it. The user manual took me around 2 hours of heavy duty search (almost at page 5 of the google research)..... And it was anything but useful, at least for my problem back then. Anyways, I followed those step yesterday (and again just now), fred@tinkerboard:~$ sudo nmcli dev wifi rescan fred@tinkerboard:~$ sudo nmcli dev wifi list IN-USE BSSID SSID MODE CHAN RATE SIGNAL BARS SECURITY F4:06:8D:53:4B:E0 Devolo-Fr3d Infra 1 130 Mbit/s 92 ▂▄▆█ WPA1 WPA2 30:D3:2D:0A:8A:68 Devolo-Fr3d Infra 6 130 Mbit/s 50 ▂▄__ WPA1 WPA2 38:35:FB:4F:9F:06 Casa_2.4GHz Infra 11 195 Mbit/s 49 ▂▄__ WPA2 fred@tinkerboard:~$ sudo nmcli --ask dev wifi connect Devolo-Fr3d Password: •••••••••• Errore: attivazione connessione non riuscita: (7) Erano richiesti dei segreti, ma non ne sono stati forniti. The last line is: "ERROR: couldn't activate the connection: (7) Secrets were requested, but they weren't given" Usually how can someone see if their routers uses RADIUS?? It should be noted it's kinda new, like only 3 years old. We've got this one, straight from our ISP, and sent back the previous one which was from zyxel. jock
Hello fr3d, I recently tried the Tinkerboard-S (which should be identical to yours, except for the onboard eMMC) for the imminent new armbian issue release and, despite the network was far from being fast, I was able to connect without particular issues to my router which is one floor away with basic WPA2 encryption. My test image was Jammy with linux 5.15 kernel, so it was pretty regular. Which image did you use?
CryBaby
If you are using WPA then you probably don't have RADIUS as that is for central auth in enterprise environments, usually they use PEAP. That doesn't necessarily rule out OpenSSL as the culprit though. I get the same error as you at work but have no problem at home where my router runs OpenWRT. Perhaps there is a menu option in your router for firmware updates. You could try the workaround suggested in the link I posted: > > adding this to /usr/lib/ssl/openssl.cnf fixes the issue. > > > > [system_default_sect] > > Options = UnsafeLegacyRenegotiation It may not be quite that simple, it didn't work for me. Alternatively, you could get hold of another router (gl-inet.com) that you can connect to and hook it up to your main router with a cable from WAN to LAN ports.
fr3d
@jock The last one available on this site, just downloaded it the last weekend. jock
Hello @fr3d, last day I checked in with my tinkerboard-s and a fresh Ubuntu Jammy cli image, kernel 5.15, taken from download pages. Everything was working very fine with my router, which is crappy sercomm but does its job. What I noticed is that the power management of the chip, which is on by default, may interfere a bit and caused some up&downs in throughput. You can try to turn it off with: iwconfig wlan0 power off Also the transmitting was kind of low (12db); I don't know where is the programmed default, but you may try to increase to near-maximum and see if you still have problems: iwconfig wlan0 txpower 18 To show the hardware settings (including power management and tx power): iwconfig wlan0 Try and tell me if it gets better

jock
I wonder what dmesg is saying about. Recently it happened to me that I could not connect to a board that worked as an AP. On the client, network manager was telling me errors about the missing secret, but dmesg was telling that the connection was denied and soon I discovered that the AP was not able to accept more clients.

jock
@fr3d Thanks, happy new year to you too! The OF dtb is shared among regular tinkerboard and tinkerboard S, the latter should just have a soldered eMMC. About the still missing secret, well, I really don't know what's wrong. Looks like a software issue rather than hardware/dtb related. If you could try a different router or a different distribution (maybe a debian one) could give some more hints... Also are you using WPA3?

fr3d
@jock, I'm using WPA2, as my router the one from my ISP uses it, I don't have any spare routers, as the ISP usually take back his old model upon sending us the new one..... I also tried for a little time the official Debian distro for the tinkerboard, provided on the asus site. Same issue, that's why I came there.... Good evening @atone, thanks for the tips, now I'll try the solution I hadn't heard of yet. - nmtui, got me stuck on the loop of continuously asking for my password, and at the third time it gives up, telling me connection not working... fred@tinkerboard:~$ nmcli --fields UUID,TIMESTAMP-REAL con show | grep never | awk '{print $1}' | while read line; do nmcli con delete uuid $line; done Connection 'Devolo-Fr3d' (f78d8f2a-c13c-46e4-9f17-7f49a5df3f49) successfully deleted. fred@tinkerboard:~$ nmcli d wifi list IN-USE BSSID SSID MODE CHAN RATE SIGNAL BARS SECURITY F4:06:8D:53:4B:E0 Devolo-Fr3d Infra 11 130 Mbit/s 92 ▂▄▆█ WPA1 WPA2 30:D3:2D:0A:8A:68 Devolo-Fr3d Infra 6 130 Mbit/s 49 ▂▄__ WPA1 WPA2 fred@tinkerboard:~$ sudo nmcli --ask dev wifi connect "Devolo-Fr3d" [sudo] password for fred: Sorry, try again. [sudo] password for fred: Password: •••••••••• Error: Connection activation failed: (7) Secrets were required, but not provided. I tried countless time with "SSID", ''SSID'' (double apostrophe), 'SSID' and nothing, as in SSID but the device fail to connect, and I only have 6 devices on that Extender, on with Armbian 21 it worked like a piece of cake. I have no idea what it is intended for a wallet in 2 of the proposed solution, so I'm skipping them for now, mostly because the distro were different. As for the proposed solution to cancel the device from the router list is a real pain in the ass, will try tomorrow as I need to re read the user manual...
jock
@fr3d are you sure the wlan0 device isn't changing the MAC address on each reboot? I read from the @atone's link the same error can happen when there is a MAC address blacklist.
bang
I'm having the exact same problem... Using a Devolo 723 AP... Did you found any solution? Edited April 30, 2023 by bang
fr3d
Sorry for the long wait, but as the wireless solution wasn't working, I just used one of those POE splitter, plugged into the ethernet port, the USB micro B and it work. My work around POE splitter 5V microUSB. It's been working like a charm for the past 4 months..... In my basament just near my 3 other pis that are connected to my POE switch.
fr3d
I would like to inform you all, that my sd card died, and upon reflection, I decided to download the CLI version, as I only used the graphic one, maybe twice till now. Now I've discovered that the wireless connectivity works absolutely fine in the Bookworm CLI version, I hope that maybe the upgrade would work as well with you too.
