Alb Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Hello, I have an issue with my box, which keeps freezing without any apparent error signals. It's probably me not knowing where to look, so I'm kindly asking for your help to understand how to proceed in identifying the root cause. My box is a MXQ PRO 4K (Leelbox), I'm using meson-gxbb-p201.dtb and u-boot-s905. Current version: v25.2 rolling for aml-s9xx-box running Armbian Linux 6.6.66-current-meson64 The box works perfectly for some hours, then it goes offline and disappears. The led is still blue (on), but even if I attach and hdmi cable there's no signal. I tried to leave a couple of ssh sessions opened to see what's happening before the crash, this is what I see: htop 0[|||||||| 5.4%] Tasks: 35, 10 thr, 104 kthr; 1 running 1[||| 2.0%] Load average: 0.11 0.08 0.03 2[|| 1.3%] Uptime: 00:33:16 3[|||| 2.6%] Mem[||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 143M/925M] Swp[ 0K/463M] [Main] [I/O] PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU%▽MEM% TIME+ Command 2320 alberto 20 0 11268 7296 3200 R 2.7 0.8 0:50.34 htop 1578 root 20 0 329M 21564 14720 S 1.3 2.3 0:01.83 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon 1336 systemd-re 20 0 21492 12288 10240 S 0.7 1.3 0:00.55 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-resolved 1591 root 20 0 17500 10240 8960 S 0.7 1.1 0:05.76 /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -u -s -O DIR=/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev 2628 alberto 20 0 6944 3584 2176 S 0.7 0.4 0:15.46 watch -n 1 cat /etc/armbianmonitor/datasources/soctemp 1 root 20 0 21852 11724 8524 S 0.0 1.2 0:04.98 /sbin/init splash 1105 root 20 0 26412 6220 4556 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.41 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udevd 1295 root 19 -1 28008 7808 6912 S 0.0 0.8 0:00.41 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald 1334 _rpc 20 0 8320 3456 3072 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.03 /sbin/rpcbind -f -w 1386 root 20 0 6720 2048 1920 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.04 /usr/sbin/cron -f -P 1395 messagebus 20 0 8648 3712 3200 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.75 @dbus-daemon --system --address=systemd: --nofork --nopidfile --systemd-activation --syslog-only 1404 root 20 0 17468 7424 6656 S 0.0 0.8 0:00.30 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-logind 1446 syslog 20 0 217M 6016 3200 S 0.0 0.6 0:00.12 /usr/sbin/rsyslogd -n -iNONE 1560 syslog 20 0 217M 6016 3200 S 0.0 0.6 0:00.02 /usr/sbin/rsyslogd -n -iNONE 1561 syslog 20 0 217M 6016 3200 S 0.0 0.6 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/rsyslogd -n -iNONE 1562 syslog 20 0 217M 6016 3200 S 0.0 0.6 0:00.03 /usr/sbin/rsyslogd -n -iNONE 1571 root 20 0 27048 1152 1152 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/rngd -r /dev/hwrng 1573 root 20 0 27048 1152 1152 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/rngd -r /dev/hwrng 1574 root 20 0 27048 1152 1152 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/rngd -r /dev/hwrng 1575 root 20 0 27048 1152 1152 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/rngd -r /dev/hwrng 1687 root 20 0 329M 21564 14720 S 0.0 2.3 0:00.09 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon 1691 root 20 0 329M 21564 14720 S 0.0 2.3 0:00.00 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon 1694 root 20 0 329M 21564 14720 S 0.0 2.3 0:00.37 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon 1922 root 20 0 108M 21376 12416 S 0.0 2.3 0:00.48 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/share/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrade-shutdown --wait-for-signal 1923 vnstat 20 0 5180 3328 2688 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.57 /usr/sbin/vnstatd -n 1944 _chrony 20 0 19696 3112 2432 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.16 /usr/sbin/chronyd -F 1 1945 _chrony 20 0 11568 3384 2816 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.01 /usr/sbin/chronyd -F 1 1953 root 20 0 5292 1408 1408 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.02 /sbin/agetty -o -p -- \u --keep-baud 115200,57600,38400,9600 - Alb Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 Hi, I tried with Debian, stable, but the problem is still there. This time when the ssh connection dropped I received this error: kernel:[132648.806302] Internal error: Oops: 0000000096000004 [#1] PREEMPT SMP This is what comes up after restarting with armbianmonitor -u https://paste.next.armbian.com/dalewonika 0 Quote
Pita Bread Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 I'm not sure... but check these things to get more information and do more troubleshooting: Check your power supply for frayed wires and try a different power supply that puts out the same volts but more amperes. If you booted from a SD card or a USB flash drive, check it for data corruption and physical damage. Also try another card or USB drive. Check the motherboard and CPU for excessive heat above 60 Celsius. If it's too hot, it can do strange things. Create a cron job as a regular user to get kernel messages and write them to a text file (every 1 minute). Run "crontab -e" and add the text I wrote below to the crontab and save the file. Later open and read the kernel-dmesg.txt file. I hope that helps some. */1 * * * * /usr/bin/dmesg > $HOME/kernel-dmesg.txt 0 Quote
Alb Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 Hi Pita Bread, thanks for the support. Quote If you booted from a SD card or a USB flash drive, check it for data corruption and physical damage. Also try another card or USB drive I tried with SD and USB, same error. That's why I tried to reinstall everything using Debian instead of Ubuntu (on the USB at the moment), but the problem is still there. At least now there's an Oops: 0000000096000004 which is better than nothing Quote Check the motherboard and CPU for excessive heat above 60 Celsius This was the first thing I checked, temperature was 41°C or similar when it crashed. Quote Create a cron job as a regular user to get kernel messages and write them to a text file (every 1 minute). Run "crontab -e" and add the text I wrote below to the crontab and save the file. Later open and read the kernel-dmesg.txt file. I hope that helps some. I set it, let's see. The board was running for a couple of days before it crashed, Let's hope it crashes sooner this time About the wires.. I hope they are not frayed, I will try to see if I can find another power supplier. Thanks again, Alb 1 Quote
Alb Posted December 31, 2024 Author Posted December 31, 2024 Hello, it crashed and this is the content of kernel-dmesg.txt. I see an interesting "Received SIGTERM from PID 1", does it mean the board was shutting down? Can this be related to some kind of automatic update not going the right way?
