  1. Hi, There's been a few guides around on how to get RDP working with Armbian so you can login from your Windows or other PC. Some solutions mentioned in various threads here were: Install tightvncserver instead + x2go bloat (i.e. use VNC) Only login as root - didn't seem to make any difference for me Change some permissions of a log file in your home directory. Well, this is what I did on my Orange PI PC running Buster desktop with Kernel 5.4, as of April 2020. sudo apt install xrdp xorgxrdp sudo systemctl enable xrdp sudo reboot ... and that was it. The missing piece of the puzzel appeared to be the install of xorgxrdp, this isn't installed automatically by 'xrdp' package, and it's useless without it.
  2. OK. I'll refer to the Git going forward. My question was more out of curiosity, not a demand. Armbian on an Orange Pi PC does everything one could want now thanks to the work sunxi have done and your tireless unpaid hard work. It's amazing how far things have come. Merry Christmas!
  3. Hi Igor. Is there any update on mali integration in the mainline kernel? It does not look like there has been any movement on that pull request, so I assume hardware accelerated 3D graphics is still out of the question?
  4. Hi, I installed Armbian Buster Desktop last night (finally upgraded from the legacy 3.X Jessie distribution) for my Orange PI PC and HDMI Audio worked fine. Just needed to select this option in the Audio Config. Pity about the fact there's no hardware accelerated video etc... but hopefully by 2021 we might have that working in the Linux kernal!
  5. Yep. The Orange Pi's are total garbage. All they really are is a Chinese TV box without a case! Might as well buy a TV box!
  6. Requirements: Doesn't require endless stuffing around to get working with various Kernel patches. Not a headless device. Want to be able to plug this into HDMI to view a basic desktop. Linux Kernel o f > 4.6 support + future compatability. (i.e. my orange pi is basically stuck forever at 3.0 unless I want a headless box) SSH / Web Server NAS of USB attached devices Desktop Web Browsing with decent video playing performance Video playing of H265 and 264 output. Audio playing support of course (2 channel sterio is OK) Bonus points: Hardware H264 encoding... but not sure I'd ever actually use this.

  8. Hi, Long time OrangePi PC user here who was going to get another of these devices but is intrigued by the TV Boxes which some can be get for about $15. I'm confused about what is the 'best' Tv Box chip-set to get here, Amlogic (yeah I noticed the threads about them lying about CPU speed, but I don't care) or Rockchip etc. What has the best, or is likely in the future to have good Linux Kernel support for WiFi, Ethernet, SD Card, Audio, HDMI and Hardware Decoding (and bonus points for encoding!)? Amlogic seems to be a winner right? Any links to Aliexpress products that fit the bill?

I bought an Orange Pi PC about two years ago which is still working perfectly to this day (very happy with it), but I am curious to know what would be considered the 'best' Single Board Computer at this time point time, which would be around the same price range ($15 USD). 'Best' being defined as having a decent processor, and good software support - which the Orange Pi PC eventually did. I'm tempted to just buy another one of these for another project, but interested to know. Again, the main factor is price - $15 USD or less would be ideal.
  10. I guess it's up to Igor to decide this. I think even 10 boards is too many. Perhaps the Top 5 get priority. I suspect this would mean most of the Orange PI derivatives would be the focus - but one only needs to look at the forums to see they already are.
  11. Hi Igor. More than happy to help out, but I am confused as to the purpose of that sun8i.conf config file. What really needs to change is the contents within the distribution '/etc/lirc/hardware.conf' so similar to how lircd.conf is contained here. Any insight in to how to do this appreciated. I am happy to test for stretch.
  12. If run the LCD screen + IC2 module off the 3.3volt rail directly, you won't need a level converter. When I tried using the 3.3volts to power the LCD the screen was really dim/dull. I didn't check to see if it worked though. If it did, then you've saved yourself a bit of hassle :-)
  13. Hi All, I recently bought a cheap 16 character, 2 row LCD display from aliexpress.com for use with my Orange Pi PC. I got it to work without too much pain, but I thought I would document it here for the benefit of others. Some good instructions are already available on the internet, but there are some tweaks required for the Orange PI. Armbian I believe already has the I2C module compiled into the kernel directly. So no Linux Kernal insmod work required, unlike what many Raspberry PI guides seem to imply. Step 1) Buy the things you will need. 1. You obviously need a 1602 LCD module which also comes with the the I2C converter. You can buy a 1602 LCD and wire it directly to the 16 GPIO pins required if you want, but that isn't the point of this guide. 2. You will need a level shifter. The LCD display works on +5volts. The OrangePI/H3 GPIO pins are 3.3 volts. I have seen guides stating that you don't need a level shifter, but I'm sure you're slowly frying some transistors in your OrangePI over time. 3. You will need a bunch of jumper cables etc. Like these, female to female only required really. Step 2) Wire things up accordingly.   14. I don't know enough about the XOrg to /dev/disp chain, but I'm willing to put my c coding skills to test! However, is there any hardware limitation which would make this not possible? My only query is trying to pump the resulting VPU generated bitmap to the X framebuffer (correct me if I have no idea what I'm talking about) would probably have an adverse performance hit.

Hi All, Does anybody have a solution to the issue with playing video in Armbian that the MPV on-screen controls (i.e. Pause, Stop and the Timeline) isn't visible in the bottom middle of the video frame? Is there any way to get this back? Does it require a re-compile of mpv, or is this behaviour a result of the All winner undocumented blob based hardware acceleration, dumping pixels straight onto the frame buffer, with little one can do about it. Has anybody compiled mpv from scratch and not had this issue? I notice that when playing video, the video paints over the top of everything - including the mouse pointer. Photo attached with red boxes to highlight what I mean.
  16. Well. Looks like I have wasted your time tkaiser. Sorry! It seems my ISP provided an Over the Air update of my Router/Modem exactly the same time I upgraded to a 32GB Class 10 SD card. This OTA update looks to have fixed the Ethernet issue with the Orange PI PC. I can't seem the replicate the problem anymore, even with the old SD Card or older version of Armbian. If only I had another switch from the get go, I could have confirmed it was actually an issue with my networking hardware not the PI PC!
  17. The Class 4 SD Card is fine from a storage perspective, but maybe it's the reduced bus speed that was killing other peripherals on the H3. Warning: Only 7439 of 7440 MByte tested. Test finished without errors. You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.   18. I think I have figured it out and it again goes to show what a black box these Chinese H3 devices are. I have been using a 8GB Class 4 SD Card with this device without any issues, other than with Ethernet performance being dismal when using full duplex either at 100mbps or 10mbps port speed. It seems this has been resolved with the use of a Transcend 32GB Class 10 SD Card!?? Although I am also using Armbian 5.20 now, instead of 5.14 on the Class 4 SD Card - so maybe that was it. Who knows how these devices work. Maybe the bus frequency is reduced to match the frequency of the SD Card, which inadvertently kills the Ethernet? Maybe the Armbian 5.20 fixed something. Another one of life's mysteries. Edit: Absolutely nothing to do with the SD Card. Looking like my ISP provided an Over the Air update of my Router/Modem which fixed this bizarre Ethernet issue with the Orange PI PC. I can't seem the replicate the problem, even with the old SD Card or older version of Armbian.
  19. Wouldn't have the slightest clue. Your first battle will be seeing if such a piece of hardware is even supported by Linux. If not, no amount of ALSA configuration is going to help. In any case, the configuration above is for audio output only.

Hi All, After I accomplished my IR Red Key Rick Rolling experiment the other day with much success, and from general end-luser use with Armbian, there were two things which irritated me, which are namely due to the default ALSA configuration that comes with stock Debian and that Armbian inherits. These were: Update: 11 September 2017. This guide will not work for newer Armbiam (Debian) installations which comes with Pulseaudio by default. If you really want what this tutorial provides, you will need to uninstall pulseaudio first: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio 1) You can't have simultaneous applications using an Audio device. So, how about if I want to stream Internet Radio with 'Radio Tray' but also get system alert sounds, or anything else? Out of luck, you'll get (for example): [ao/alsa] Playback open error: Device or resource busy 2) I want to actually have audio going out of the 3.5mm jack (don't really care about video out), better still if it's the same/simultaneous to what is going out via. HDMI. That means if I have a HDMI TV connected then I can get the sound from the TV, if I don't, then I can just use the 3.5mm jack (i.e. If I'm using my Pi to play Rick Astley headless/without a TV). No need to keep editing /etc/asound.conf every time. Solution? Step 1) Fix the mute on the analog Line-Out in alsamixer (for a start) There's a lot of noise out there about people not being able to get any sound our of the analog Line-Out jack even when having changed /etc/asound.conf. The reason for this is likely due to a mute by default on the analog audio line-out (i.e. the 3.5mm headphone jack) in alsa that you would unlikely to be aware of. I only found this out thanks to a comment here, otherwise I would have thrown by Pi PC out the window today. So to fix, you need to type in the console: sudo alsamixer Then F6 select the 'audiocodec', then tap the right arrow key to select the 'Audio lineout [Off]' item. Press 'm' and you'll get the green 'OO', which means it's now active. Exit alsamixer, and when you're back at the console type: sudo alsactl store 0 ... to store you mixer settings. For your information, the mixer settings are stored to the file: /var/lib/alsa/asound.state ... and if you do a diff of this file after having made the changes in alsamixer, this is what is changed in the alsa asound.state file: control.9 { control.9 { iface MIXER iface MIXER name 'Audio lineout' name 'Audio lineout' value false | value true comment { comment { access 'read write' access 'read write' type BOOLEAN type BOOLEAN count 1 count 1 } } } } Step 2) Change the /etc/asound.conf file As you might or might not be aware, the default /etc/asound.conf file looks something like this: pcm.!default { type hw card 1 } ctl.!default { type hw card 1 } All it is configured to do is give applications direct access to the hardware audio device, and pump the sound either out to the analogue line-out ('card 0') or via HDMI ('card 1'). Pretty basic, but does the job. However, what I wanted was two things: Software mixing before the resulting PCM/Sound is sent to the hardware audio device - This enables me to listen to Internet Radio and Youtube at the same time... Simultaneous Output to both HDMI and analog line-out. The only downside is that CPU usage for playing music will increase a bit as ALSA will essentially route inputs from applications to two Software Mixers, which are connected to the HDMI and Analog Line-Out hardware devices separately. For some reason you can't have a single Software Mixer route to two hardware devices (or I couldn't get it to work), but whatever. We're talking 20% CPU usage vs. 10% on one core, to play music.
  23. Note: Guide Updated May 2017, as I realise that /dev/input/event3 may not always be the IR receiver device on your armbian installation. Hi All, I recently bought an Orange PI PC and the best thing I ever did was install Armbian straight away (and donate). Now that I have a bit of spare time, I wanted to configure my Orange PI PC to do something ridiculous like play Rick Ashley 'Never going to give you up' upon pressing the 'red button' on some generic Chinese IR remote for an LED light strip I have in my living room. Thanks to Armbian, most of the pieces are in place (such as the SunXI IR package) with the distribution, you just need to glue it all together. However there are few configuration issues with the default Armbian install on the Orange PI PC that need to be adjusted, otherwise you'll encounter infuriating issues such as: No IR device existing or being detected (root cause: sunxi-cir module not loaded) No LIRC 'irw' output even after successfully using irrecord (root cause: DRIVER=devinput doesn't work, though it could be my remote), like this poor sod was experiencing. I should also note that this guide on the terrible Orange PI forums, helped me with my issues. Step 1) Adjust /etc/lirc/hardware.conf Updated: This guide was originally written for Armbian based on Debian 'Jessie'. The latest Armbian (as at September 2017) is now based on Ubuntu Xenial. This introduces a new lirc package which yet again comes with a broken hardware.conf For Ubuntu Xenial (September 2017): The default hardware.conf that comes with Armbian is broken. It's assigning the 'remote' and 'transmitter' to the same device, this breaks everything. This is a good news. Step 5) Configure lirc to map IR input to key presses or events. Again, Armbian has irrecord installed (great work Igor), but given I'm re-using this remote to configure the output of a LED strip I have, I'll need to map the IR data sent, to something more meaningful. In other use-cases this isn't generally required as lircs provides a database of media remotes which is pre-mapped to Linux commands/keyboard keys. There's plenty of information on how to use irrecord, command I used was: /etc/init.d/lirc stop ...to first stop the service, then: irrecord -H default -d /dev/lirc0 /etc/lirc/lircd.conf ... to record my remote and bind to 'keys'. If you have a /etc/lirc/lircrc file, the irexec service will start automatically at boot - this service is what actually converts the key press to the command.   24. It shouldn't be the power supply as I have bought the official one from the Orange Pi Ali express shop. Running any stress testing doesn't cause any problems, other than the CPU getting a bit hot, which I'm waiting for a heat sink to resolve. I think there is something wrong with my board.
