Unfortunately this is one of those things you have to live with, the android driver is both closed source and unavailable for any platform besides android, thus unless someone writes a driver from scratch to fully offload GPU processes to hardware, it will always be done in CPU in linux.

I don't have a rockchip device, but 5.7.15 is the last kernel working on my S905X3 device, all others after it fail, so i am wondering if something in the kernel itself is broken. I noticed starting with 5.7.16 it would not properly update the directories in /lib/modules with the new version number. Possible other areas are affected as well.

Hello all, I have sadly had to reinstall my nicely build Armbian system after a bad update I can't run ddbr to make a backup of my eMMC. Whether as root on my OS on eMMC, or booted from USB drive, command "ddbr" does not exist. What can I do? This seems to be missing on both Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.15_desktop.img and Armbian_20.09_Arm-64_buster_current_5.8.5.img I might be doing something wrong but i tried both "ddbr" and "sudo ddbr", says command does not exist. This is exactly the situation i found, boots to 20.09 just fine but once you install to the emmc, all goes wrong. My device is an X96 Air (4gb RAM / 32gb eMMC / S905X3) ---I would advise caution installing a kernel later than 5.7.15 on S905X3 for now. --- I just tried every Balbes150 Armbian build written to eMMC on my X96 Air. 5.7.15 is the latest that will boot from eMMC. I'm now booting from Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.15_desktop.img The following images had no problem booting from USB drive, but after running install-aml.sh, would be stuck in a boot loop, even X96 Air logo was missing: Armbian_20.08_Arm-64_focal_current_5.7.16_desktop.img Armbian_20.09_Arm-64_focal_current_5.8.5_desktop.img Armbian_20.09_Arm-64_buster_current_5.8.5.img As my previous 20.08 install stopped booting as soon as I updated to kernel 5.7.16 with "apt update" & "apt upgrade", I believe this version and the following versions to be problematic for the time being. I did notice, after upgrading my 20.08 system with "apt", the directories in /boot reflected the new kernel of 5.7.16, but the directories in /lib/modules reflected 5.7.15. Perhaps it is not fully installing? Edit: I would recommend, if you have a working system for now, to run apt-mark hold linux-image-current-arm-64 After doing this on a fresh install of 20.08 Focal 5.7.15, I was able to run apt update & apt upgrade, and reboot back into the OS successfully. It seems that the kernel update is the only offending update, in that case.

Did anyone successfully install Balbes150 20.09 on their S905X3? each time it fails to boot after running install-aml.sh, but it works just fine from 20.08. I just freshly re-installed Focal 20.08 w/ desktop on my X96 Air. I had to use Amlogic Burn Card Maker with the X96 Air stock Android firmware to make a recovery SD card after 20.09 install failed.

If you find a stock Android firmware for your X96-max, you should be able to recover it with sd-card. For my X96 Air which bricked after install-aml.sh on latest 20.09, I downloaded "X96Air_P3_20191220-2048.img" and burned it to sd-card. USB-stick seems not to work for this. I will attempt reinstall of 20.09, since the Android image can work to recover the box.

Hello all, I have 20.08 on my X96 Air. Today after running apt update && apt upgrade, i rebooted the machine, but it hangs on a black screen after the "X96 Air" logo. Is there a way i can get back into the system without erasing the eMMC? Unfortunately I can not get a list of what had been updated as I can't get back into the OS. I was able to boot the machine with the same USB drive I installed 20.08 from, but i'm not sure how i could attempt to rescue my system. I noticed all the folders in /boot say 5.7.16 however my /lib/modules folder said 5.7.15. I tried changing the name in /lib/modules to 5.7.15, but it still doesnt' work. Thank you,

The rockchip ones are the best, for sure, but they are the most expensive too. i prefer X96 Air for a balance of performance and value, considering for optimal use you will likely spend an extra $10 on heatsink and new PSU. With some heatsinks it is a very good performer for under $50 and has great I/O and hardware support without modifications on Balbes150 builds. I would also highly recommend replacing the PSU on any of these with a 3A or better if it is going to be doing serious work. You will see much better performance at peak CPU load with a 3A or better. 4gb RAM and 32GB eMMC is the bare minimum i will accept. I got a comcast branded 5V 3A power supply on ebay for only $5 shipped, but the catch was the plug wasn't the same size as the X96 Air, so i got a 10 pack of 5.5x2.1 male barrel DC plugs and soldered it on. I got a T95 max+ as well. Cost less than the X96 air, and mostly same specs, but less usb ports & no optical I/O, & no working wifi out of the box. I set up the T95 max+ for my parents as their new web-browsing computer, with auto apt update scripts applied, to replace their aging Mini Mac which is several OS's behind. With a browser, email client, calculator, and nothing else, it serves them fine & is compatible with their HP printer via hplip. Sadly there seems to be no hope for me to use my Canon printer on my X96 Air as Canon drivers are x86 specific.

I have replaced the 2A power supply it came with (which i highly doubt was capable of true 2A) with a much better quality 3A power supply. I seem to be experiencing much less slow down at peak CPU load. I had to solder my own DC barrel plug on the 3A power supply as the plug on it was smaller than 5.5x2.1mm. Luckily a 10 pack of 5.5x2.1 plugs is very cheap on ebay. I also was seeing temperatures rise as high as 68C. I bought a pack of small aluminum adhesive heatsinks on eBay. I put one on the SOC (which had only a piece of squishy foam as its cooler!), one on each RAM / Flash memory chip, and one of the Wifi module. I am now unable to push it past 55C even under sustained full load. All in all very worth it for a serious Armbian user to do these small fixes, especially the 3 amp power supply, i am seeing such better performance compared to the X96 Air in stock form with these two mods. I was planning on adding a cutout for a fan, but i'm not sure it's needed after all.

Hello everyone, I have two S905x3 boxes happily running Balbes150 20.08 Armbian build. I am trying to figure out how to make a working backup of the eMMC. Normally in a situation like this I would use Clonezilla, but that doesn't boot on these arm64 boxes. Should I make a bootable USB with one of Balbes150 images and use "dd" on /dev/mmcblk2 to an image file? Would I be able to then restore that image file with "dd" to another S905x3 box and have it boot?

Confirmed working 20.08 on both T95 Max+ and X96 Air. Thanks to all and especially @balbe I thought T95 Max+ would never work, even with toothpick method, but I used the same USB i installed with X96 Air, so the exact same setup should work, I don't have wlan0 working on X96 Air, but eth0 works. On T95 Max+ everything seems to work relating to ethernet until I installed the desktop packages, suddenly eth0 is no longer picking up a connection or IP address with DHCP. Still figuring it out. IT did work fine before I installed the desktop package through armbian-config I used meson-sm1-sei610-ethfix.dtb on the X96 Air, and the non -ethfix version on the T95 Max+ and u-boot-s905x2-s922 on both. It is important on the T95 Max+ to use the USB port closer to the rear of the device, as the one closer to the microSD slot did not work for me!

Hello, I am using the latest image of 20.08. I can't figure out how to install to eMMC. armbian-config doesn't have the Install option anywhere, and nand-sata-install returns "command not found: nand-sata-install" I am following along with the guide here: https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Getting-Started/ Maybe i missed something in the guide, but it did work to install to eMMC with the install-*.sh scripts in the directory i was in. I used the install-aml script as root and now can boot to Armbian on the X96 Air without SD or USB, ethernet works.

I used meson-sm1-sei610.dtb and u-boot-s905x2-s922 renamed to u-boot.ext. booted fine but no ethernet. But with meson-sm1-sei610-ethfix i am stuck at random: crng init done Anyone got ethernet working? Sorry for my ignorance, I made a mistake in extlinux.conf and had two different dtb files selected. Worked fine when i left only sei610-ethfix uncommented. But, I can't get to the "Install" option from within armbian-config or nand-sata-install.

I have two X96 Air but i can't get it to work with u-boot-s905x2-s922 renamed to u-boot.ext and meson-sm1-sei610.dtb on microSD but it did work from USB thumb drive in USB 2.0 port (not USB 3.0 port)

Hi guys. I had a s905x previously which died - the heatsink fell off. I ran armbian on it for a little while and it was great. But i replaced it with a s912 which i like the extra power of. I am now looking for an android box to get for armbian use only. I will probably put an intel heatsink/fan on it even if i feel it is necessary. Which devices under $70 would be considered most ideal for armbian only use? I hope not to have to go back to s905x after experiencing s912 but if it is the best stable one, i will get another cheap s905x. Onboard flash 8gb vs 16gb... Not a huge deal. Will use 200gb microsd either way. RAM at least 2gb my only real concern. Thanks very much all.
