I threw the patch into userpatches dir and let a legacy kernel build and at least it applies without errors reported (whatever that means):
 
[ o.k. ] ... [u][c] dm9601-bug.patch [ succeeded ]

You find them for as less as $10 on eBay (or even just $7) or in combination with a VL812 (Rev B2 or newer recommended) as GbE + 3 port hub combo.
