lag spikes when using wireguard on banana pi m1

I have a problem with my wireguard implementation. When connected through it I get lag spikes every few seconds. What might be the cause and solution to this? It is not the internet connection/cable/etc because a raspberry pi running wireguard works fine on the same exact cable, port etc.
