kennyevo Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Hi! I have an OPiPlus2, the official product page says that the soc runs on 1.6ghz, but the cpufreq-info says it's hardware limited to 1.3ghz, so what now? Thanks in advance and sorry if I miss something!
tkaiser Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Forget both about 'official product page' and cpufreq-info 'labels'. When we (linux-sunxi community and Armbian team) started to support H3 boards a lot of testing happened. It's safe to to clock H3 with 1296 MHz on boards that feature the SY8106A programmable voltage generator so we decided after a lot of tests to go with this upper value. In case you really know what you do you can increase that (but 1.6GHz was never possible. The absolute maximum is 1536GHz and then you need insane overvolting and are most probably not even able to check whether the SoC works reliably with this speed so the whole idea to clock it that high is moronic since no one likes bit flips and data corruption) Further readings in case you're interested: http://linux-sunxi.org/Orange_Pi_PC#CPU_clock_speed_limit http://linux-sunxi.org/User:Tkaiser#Orange_Pi_H3_stability.2Fheat_issues https://github.com/ssvb/linux-sunxi/commit/589da2af30717333bf9a287dcb467a07e18c1472 (the last commit is the reason why we are able to use 1.3 GHz whereas most if not all OS images available at Orange Pi forums aren't -- OpenELEC being one known exception)
kennyevo Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 Hi! Thank you for the quick response, so if I understand, there's no real advantage of using the higher value, overheating, unstable running, etc.
