Hello igor! Thank you. The last build 3.0 jessie with kernel 4.0.4 works fine. But i had some problem with first boot after installation. After i try to change password for root bpi drop connection and after reconnection password still was 1234. I tried about 5 times. I had to reboot bpi with disconnect power and after reboot i was able to change password normally.

Yes. Jessie & systemd are causing some additional troubles and this is one of them.

It started in latest build - the build before Jessie was anyway completely broken.

You simply need to wait that it reboots than it works just fine.

I know it's not noted under bugs. I'll add. Thanks for bringing up.

Hello Igor,

I am playing with two Bananas since one year... from my point the Allwinner A20 boards are very good toys in money and perfomance...

but the last week I had been playing with your Image and I am perfectly satisfied... great Job :)

Today I checked your page of the Orange PI... It shows a new image with Kernel 4.0.4...  The change log shows "usb/sata install fixed on 4.0.4"!!!

Is it the same Kernel as for Banana PI? Is it fixed for Banana PI as well?

Or am I only impatient?

regards

Fischkopp

Sorry to ask again...

Does SATA work on Banana too?   The Banana page still shows "USB/SATA install fails on new kernel".

Is Kernel 4.0.4 reliable? (compared to 3.4.107)

regards and thanks

Sata install works now on all 4.x but I only rebuild Orange kernel ... which covers all Allwinner boards. Just the name is "orange".

Huh. It's stable but it's lack of some functionality and it's hard to say if it's 100% reliable. I haven't used it that much.

I just need USB, SATA and Gigabit LAN...

I will try Kernel 4.0.4 on the media server....   see if it will run 24/7...

Hi Igor,

basically I followed your 'FAQ - frequently asked questions' to upgrade the kernel from 3.4.107 to 4.0.4...

mkdir 3.19.6
cd 3.19.6
wget http://mirror.igorpecovnik.com/kernel/3.19.6-cubietruck-next.tar
tar xvf 3.19.6-cubietruck-next.tar
dpkg -i linux-image*.deb

The first try failed :(

The serial console showed:

** File not found /boot/dtb/sun7i-a20-bananapi.dtb **
5046520 bytes read in 842 ms (5.7 MiB/s)
Kernel image @ 0x46000000 [ 0x000000 - 0x4d00f8 ]
ERROR: Did not find a cmdline Flattened Device Tree
Could not find a valid device tree
SCRIPT FAILED: continuing...
scanning bus for devices...
Found 0 device(s).

When I read that device tree blob (dtb file) is missing I rembered that newer kernel need it...

I installed also this package:

dpkg -i linux-dtb-4.0.4-orangepi_1.3_armhf.deb

maybe the FAQs should describe it as well or even better it will be installed with the linux-image...

lets see if it will be stable for 24/7 ;)

Yes, I assumed that I already fixed dependencies ... but haven't   :(

U-boot is also necessary to change - with old one you might have only one CPU core. Note that last version might be broken ... so U-boot one version back - check archive.

If u-boot and dtb packets are not installed automatic, install them too:

dpkg -i linux-u-boot*.deb
dpkg -i linux-dtb*.deb

BTW: My Orange PI is hard crashing without any report of error ... with any known kernel. Longest up-time was around one week. Currently clueless.

Igor,

you are fast...

you answered my post while I have edited it :D

I updated the u-boot... now 2 CPU...

Orange PI is crashing with any kernel, also 3.4.x?

So might not be a kernel problem?

Lets see how long my Banana will keep running...

Nice!  :D

Yes, it's some unknown hardware problem, hopefully solvable.

Banana should work just fine. Hard to say how stable is kernel 4.x since it's new stuff ... people report stability but also some crashes.
