WD drives inaccessible starting with kernel 4.13

I attached a Mini PCIe to 2 Ports SATA 3.0 III Expansion Card to my espressobin. (ASM1031)

Once a disk connected to it, I'm getting this kernel error. Tried to debug using objdump, but I do not know how to extract vmlinux from "vmlinuz-4.14.2-mvebu64"

file vmlinuz-4.14.2-mvebu64 command shows the kernel is MS-DOS executable, MZ for MS-DOS.

  1. It's an ASM1062 instead
  2. Information about your hardware setup (especially how all components are powered) is missing
  3. 'armbianmonitor -u' output is missing, in addition to that multiple 'smartctl -x /dev/sda' outputs would be interesting to see which error counters at the disk side increase with some reboots in between
  4. This thing was cheap, yes? If so, your post and mine should be moved to the 'Buy cheap, buy twice!' subforum
  5. I have a strong feeling this whole issue does not belong to Armbian but is something for a 'Cheap hardware is crappy hardware' reality TV show or something like that
  6. Is this a joke? I reported that such an el cheapo ASM106x is crap and that I can't use any disk with this thing any more after a few tests (couple of cable/contact matings) and you report now the same instead of throwing this thing in the bin? :)

1. ASM1061 printed on the chip

2. I'm powering up the board and the disks using a MEAN WELL RID-50A 54W 5V 12V power supply. (This time I'm using only one disk. It's connected to the card)

Hard disk is powered directly from the power supply. it's not powered by the on-board molex connector.

3. It's not even mounted. I'm getting the trace when I try to mount the disk

4 & 5. yeah. it's a cheap one ordered from AliExpress :P

6. Unfortunately I was too late. I ordered this a few weeks ago and received it today.

To elaborate on the problem: This affects only certain WD drives that are directly SATA attached when running kernel 4.13 or 4.14. So if your disk is in an USB enclosure you're fine and if you use a lower kernel version than 4.13 you're fine too.

In other words: this is just another example of why Armbian's next branch kernel version policy is a real problem (assuming Armbian wants to be a stable distro for headless use cases and not what it has turned into the last 12 months)

Use default kernel (4.4)

I have another SD card which has the default kernel. So I rebooted from it and still get the same error.

root@espressobin:~# uname -a
Linux espressobin 4.4.96-mvebu64 #14 SMP PREEMPT Sun Nov 5 01:06:18 CET 2017 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

I do not get any issues when I connect my WD red or WD Blue hard disks directly to the espressobin sata port. I tried them on both default and next kernels.

So I think this issue is not relevant to the bug you are referring to. This should be something related to the mini PCIe card.

Maybe. But still trying to support issues when 'armbianmonitor -u' output is missing is just a waste of time. I asked already so why do you not provide the support info?

Wrt ASM106x: http://kaiser-edv.de/tmp/91o1vu/ -- the 106flash utility can be used to query and update the firmware (IIRC also backing up the current one which is strongly recommended), the contained firmware seems to be somewhat recent. Only noticeable change after I applied the update on my card was the missing eSATA capability (which is fine since not supported by those mPCIe thingies anyway).

@tkaiser sorry about that. I have missed it.

This is for the default kernel.  Also the card has been updated with the firmware.

Well, no idea then. I just did a quick web search for 'arm unhandled fault synchronous external abort' and that let me stop immediately since I lack both skills and patience to deal with such stuff (especially when hardware initialization happening prior to the kernel starting might be involved).

BTW: since we're talking about EspressoBin... when using next kernel branch after updating from 5.35 to 5.36 I successfully loose network. Anyone else experienced this?

I'm using 5.37 now. built by myself. No network issues.
