Mplayer unable to play stream

I am trying to stream a video using NanoPi M1 Plus device from a URL using

    mplayer https://someurl.com/video.mp4

But it throws an error

    No stream found to handle url https://someurl.com/video.mp4

What is the issue?

I think that default mplayer does not support SSL.

Doing google "mplayer SSL" reveal that certain persons have built an SSL from forked version.
