Hello,

Would this indicate faulty hard drive or USB port are not delivering enough power?

Disk is formatted as NTFS and is working fine on Windows 11 (no errors when connecting). I can mount with sudo mount but when I start copying files system freezes and I have to power off board.

Formatting hard drive as NTFS or even ext4 was failing while disk was connected to OPi

I decided to give a try and formatted hard drive in Windows 11 (not quick format). It took hours to complete it but disk seems to be ok.

dmesg shows only this harmless error

UPDATE:

Hard drive started playing up again :-(

Looks like it's failing and S.M.A.R.T does not detect it.

Would you recommend any particular model?

Here you can check a selection of compatible devices, usually in some personal / Armbian use. You probably don't need 16 port USB hub which is on that list, but that will certainly work perfectly. If you go for some cheap variants, and most of hubs are a lot cheaper, you will be chasing luck. For my purpose, automated testing of USB devices withing Armbian, I can't use cheap ones.

I suspect faulty board or issues with power supply. HDD just works fine on Windows machine.

I'm trying 2TB hard drive without anything other disk plugged in.

The board limits power consuption of USB devices using SY6280 chips. It sets 1.1 amper limit for a pair of USB-A connectors. Your WD Elements 25A1 draws upto 0.75A. I agree, the board and the HDD are Ok, but the power supply maybe has a poor quality
