BigG2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I'm trying to get my Logitech Quickcam working and tested using Armbian Xenial Mainline 4.9.13. It's worked out of the box on just about every other distro tried in recent years...not sure on Armbian. Here is the output from lsusb: Bus 003 Device 007: ID 046d:08d8 Logitech, Inc. Quickcam for Notebook Deluxe Bus 003 Device 006: ID 0c45:7000 Microdia Honestly, the webcam may work fine now, but I'm having issues installing a package to test it, such as Cheese or guvcview. Can someone assist me with checking it out? Once I get the webcam working, I'd like to use it with Google Hangouts or Skype (via exagear). Thanks!
Igor Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Do you have /dev/video ? Logitech C525, which is little newer than Quickcam, works out of the box with Skype on Exagear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__HKvtiOSTY&t=3s Image was build from latest sources - not from download section, but that should not be the case.
BigG2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Author Posted April 23, 2017 The webcam is apparently not recognized in /dev/video..output from "ls -l /dev/video" says "ls: cannot access '/dev/video': No such file or directory". If the C525 is recognized out of the box, should I just purchase it? I'm certainly willing to make some effort to get this one working, but I'll need some linux guru assistance.
BigG2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Tried again to get a newly purchased C525 working with gcvcview; however, it gives me an error that no webcam is found. Also, I don't see any folder /dev/video. I"m still using the zenial mainline downloaded from the website. Please help. I do have an exagear license for my odroid, so I can see if it will work that way with Skype. I just wanted to give it a basic opcheck first with a simpler program.
BigG2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Is there an easy way to change to the legacy kernel in my current zenial setup or do I need a completely new os image?
Igor Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 I just checked my setup - legacy kernel 3.10.105 and I have Skype operational, even BT headphones works. Kernel 4.x is under development ... Up and downgrade should go with help of this: https://www.armbian.com/kernel/
BigG2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 uname -r shows "4.9.13-odroidxu4" I'll give the legacy kernel a shot and see if that works. Now I see the comment "Multimedia and desktop usage scenarios" for the legacy kernel, while the mainline kernel is for "Server and light desktop usage scenarios." I must not have noticed that info before.
BigG2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Looks like a few steps backwards when I tried the legacy image: -Unable to boot to 1024x600 touchscreen display (had to boot using TV screen first for setup) -Wifi adapters (both Airlink and Comfast...Realtek chips) aren't natively recognized -Still no /dev/video for the webcam
Igor Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 That's odd. Usually more things works in legacy images ... especially displays and cameras, while for wireless adaptors ... that's another story.
BigG2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Author Posted April 30, 2017 I'm always amazed! Thanks again for your help and please provide any other recommendations to get the webcam working. Also, have you experienced any issues when trying to use the Software Store (add-on)? It opens on the Odroid, but it fails to update/refresh to show available packages...activity icon just spins. Curious if you've had any problems.
BigG2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 Logitech C525 works out of the box on Fedora Desktop with both Cheese and Skype. What's the deal with Armbian not recognizing the webcam? Any ideas?

My video is a proof that this camera works, so it is recognised and working under Armbian. You are using kernel 4.x, where not everything is implemented ... ARM Linux (kernel) is another world and if something work on desktop x86 PC, there is absolutely no warranty that it will work here.
BigG2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 I've tried both legacy and mainline images as I previously mentioned...webcam not recognized on either for me.
Igor Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Armbian Legacy works, while on recent mainline 4.9.27 (from Hardkernel) my camera also doesn't work. BigG2017 Posted May 13, 2017 Author Posted May 13, 2017 I'll be quite busy over the next couple of months, but I'm not going to give up on getting everything working. Thanks for your diligence!
