db0 Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 (edited) Hello everyone, brand new user of BananaPi and armbian, just today and I've spent quite a few hours trying to make the basic setup for WiFi work with no success. Initially I used the server version I downloaded from the main armbian page and then the "nmtui-connect" command. What happens is that it keeps asking me for the password (definitelly correct) and never accepts it. Looking at the NetworkManager logs while this is happening shows me this J Spoiler an 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9166] Config: added 'ssid' value 'The Portal of Infinite Realities' Jan 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9168] Config: added 'scan_ssid' value '1' Jan 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9169] Config: added 'key_mgmt' value 'WPA-PSK' Jan 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9170] Config: added 'auth_alg' value 'OPEN' Jan 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9171] Config: added 'psk' value '<omitted>' Jan 17 22:25:28 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227928.9222] sup-iface[0xea04d8,wlan0]: config: set interface ap_scan to 1 Jan 17 22:25:29 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227929.0120] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: inactive -> scanning Jan 17 22:25:30 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227930.1282] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: scanning -> associating Jan 17 22:25:30 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227930.2980] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: associating -> disconnected Jan 17 22:25:40 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227940.3311] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: disconnected -> scanning Jan 17 22:25:41 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227941.4510] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: scanning -> associating Jan 17 22:25:41 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227941.6669] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: associating -> disconnected Jan 17 22:25:51 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227951.7007] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: disconnected -> scanning Jan 17 22:25:54 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <warn> [1516227954.2863] device (wlan0): Activation: (wifi) association took too long Jan 17 22:25:54 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227954.2880] device (wlan0): state change: config -> need-auth (reason 'none') [50 60 0] Jan 17 22:25:54 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <warn> [1516227954.2978] device (wlan0): Activation: (wifi) asking for new secrets Jan 17 22:25:57 bananapim2plus NetworkManager[581]: <info> [1516227957.7942] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: scanning -> inactive I then tried using the nmcli command directly on the SSID with the password on the command line, with no better success. Sometimes it kept asking me the password, and then after a reboot I saw in the NetworkManager logs it was repeating "No agents were available for this request" I even tried using a direct wpa_supplicant command which was failing with some "nl80211" error but this could be because I didn't define a driver in the command line. I've tried reinstalling with the desktop version this time, with the same results. My suspicion is that somehow the system is failing to save or pass the credentials properly to my wifi. Note my wifi works fine for all other devices in the house. Ethernet connection works as well. I've been googling for hours and unfortunately I'm at my wits end as a new user. There's almost no results on my NetworkManager errors in relation to armbian or BananaPi. I've been trying various suggestions in this forum and elsewhere with no success. Currently I'm on a fresh installation again. Please let me know what more info I can provide to help you help me troubleshoot. Edited January 17, 2018 by db0
Kalobok Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 WiFi behaviour may depend on what kernel you are using. Does the board see any SSIDs at all (nmcli device wifi)? I faced a situation with mainline kernel when SSIDs with Control Channel set to 13 are not seen by the board.
db0 Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 Yes, it's seeing my SSID and it's trying to connect to it (you can see it in the log), but for some reason it's failing, sometimes when it's passing the password, and when running from the command line, sometimes when trying to get a DHCP IP.

db0 Posted January 19, 2018 Author Posted January 19, 2018 Oh, I'm using just the distro/kernel on the downloads page. As a newbie to this I thought it would be the most stable. Do you think it need to install something newer?

Do you think it need to install something newer? You made it right. Legacy kernel images are based on old stock - the one and only at the time - kernel + tons of fixes. It's (getting) EOL and will be ditched when functionality on mainline meets it. Currently, video acceleration and 3D is what is lacking in a modern one plus perhaps some obscure functions. A modern kernel is much better but since its a bleeding edge it can be declared testing at best. 4.14.y is expected to become first stable kernel for H3/H5/A64 boards. Try this image: https://dl.armbian.com/bananapim2plus/Debian_stretch_next_desktop_nightly.7z and with an update, you should get to the similar state I made those tests.
db0 Posted January 20, 2018 Author Posted January 20, 2018 Did a quick attempt with this distro, and unfortunately not much more luck this time either. Same behaviour in fact. Kernel 4.13.14 I can't troubleshoot this more tonight and I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, but I'll folow up when I come back in a week or so
