Yes, all of them use gzip/lz etc. to decompress the initrd file, but on the files that i've tried all of them seem to be compressed with somthing else (file initrd just answer with 'data'  and cpio just can't decode it. ) it is entirely possible that the file is both compressed and encrypted. (actually, quite possible)  it does not appear to be an ramfs file either (at least, not a standard one. compressed or not)

I seem to be able to get the kernel image fine (abooting) and a second file too, but can't decode the resulting initrd/ramfs.

I see, was this Android 8? I'll do some more digging then. I will test with android 6 and 7 and see what I can find out.

I was thinking about doing exactly that for an A95Xpro (runs kernel 4.9.xx)  the issue i've run into is the reconfiguration of the Initrd (can't seem find a way to decompress it, which seems to be required to replace init )

    Really interested in the answer.

Interesting, I'll have a look into the initrd issue and see what I can find.

Edit: Did you try this method https://www.thegeekstuff.com/2009/07/how-to-view-modify-and-recreate-initrd-img/

    or https://sites.google.com/site/sridharlreddylinux/linux-t/initrd-img

The answer is simple-a waste of time. Details can be found on the Internet on request, what is the difference between Android and Linux systems.

There is a BIG difference between Android and GNU/Linux, I can not run my NewCS carsderver under Android, among countless other applications....

  4. I was thinking: My Android (7.1.2) for MXQ Pro+ 4k runs on a Linux 3.14.29 kernel, that's the Linux part (and why the correct name for Ubuntu, Debian etc. is GNU/Linux).

The Android image is pre-rooted so I have access to all parts of the system in theory. What if I just copy the missing GNU components from another 3.14.29 GNU/Linux into the proper directories and purge the Android specific stuff, will I get a running system? The kernel has support for all HW in the box, yes some modules I will have to keep, but if I just copy and not overwrite anything I should get a working GNU/Linux?

What do you guys think, am I missing something essential here?

I will never support this model, it does not have a fundamentally important element for me - a wired network.

    S905Y2 = NOT support

There are versions (only S905X2), but it is too early to write about it.  :)

But it is fairly simple to connect a RJ45->USB network card to any box without ethernet, I use it on my Guleek I8S running Linux Mint 19......

The S905Y2 is the new generation of S9XXXX chips and is not supported by any available Linux kernel at the moment. So no Armbian for any box based on the S905X2 or S905Y2. You can expect it to take some time too.

Woah. Thanks, do you know anything about the 905x2/y2 performance wise? Is it even worth thinking about?

You just copied the team from the site ? When you copy text on a website, the translator changed the format of the special characters should be used a different type of quote character instead of ' should be used `

No I did not copy it from the website I wrote it by hand. I have only one type of ' on my keyboard, except for "

    @Reddwarf

Run the command uname -r, that gives you the kernel version string that you should add at the end of the update-initramfs command.

Oh, yes, and when nothing works, read the documentation for update-initramfs! :P

As I wrote I did exactly that and it worked ;).

New version 5.75 of the image and script.  dir s905_mali

Simplified use of the script. Once your image is running nominally for Armbian need to download, unzip and run the script. After the script finishes, reboot the system. If after reboot there will be no sound, you need to perform, on behalf of the ROOT user, one command

    update-initramfs -v -c -k 'uname -r'

and reboot the system. No other additional steps or commands are required.  Please note that the new version of the script works only with this version of the image (which is with him on the site in the same directory).

Tested the image on my MiniM8S (s905), ran the script, rebooted no sound, ran update-initramfs -v -c -k 'uname -r' ('uname -r' does not work, had to type the version) still no sound unless I connect an external soundcard via usb. Testvideo plays smooth and nice.

Is it necessary? Firefox work fine with multimedia, next build of chromium may also be fine.  Chromium is very resource intensive at compile time(one build with compiliting time ~3 hours need 16 threads cpu ~ 32Gb ram and ~100 gb storage on ssd).

    Ah! No maybe not...

  11. 1 hour ago, talraash said:

Not sure. Rather, the problem is in different compilation flags. Half a year ago, the situation was reversed, in favor of chromium.

I tested versions only from repositories, and it is not known who compilated them and how.  Test video from balbes150 smooth. My own sample h264 720p and 1080p looks ok too.

Mmmmm, maybe download the source and compile it yourself?

Some curious observations. All test on latest 5.75 bionic desktop image screen resolution 1080p(generic s905x tv box)

      Hide contents

https://i.imgur.com/H60AxX1.png - firefox 65(aarch64) zero drops, smooth playback 1080p youtube video in browser(still high cpu usage make sure you have good cooling)

https://i.imgur.com/jd88Xgp.png- chromium 71(aarch64) a large frames drop, not smooth playback

That might be due to poor programming in chromium, how does the test video run for you?

  13. Ok, so I did som testing with the 5.75 S905 images on my MiniM8S (S905). The Ubuntu variant boots from SD-card but complains that it has no support for the cards voltage. Changed to USB boot and is able to start Linux. WiFi works, no BT, no ethernet and no sound. If I connect external soundcard (usb) sound works. With external BT-dongle BT works. Video plays smooth and beautifully also in fullscreen just by doubleclicking the test video.

The Debian variant won't boot from SD-card, from USB it seems to start booting but dies after a minute or so.

I looked at the description and details. perhaps something and make with this equipment. But for this i'm need to have real equipment available for development and testing. I wrote to the manufacturer, if he is interested in supporting this model on the Armbian platform, then it is possible to make a working system for this model.

Well that would be great :) We can only hope...

@Reddwarf It's vpu part... https://dri.freedesktop.org/docs/drm/gpu/meson.html I mention early that if you play video which does not match with display resolution use --sws-scaler=fast-bilinear it give a huge performance boost

I see. Bilinear certainly is faster but not so good quality... Would it not be possible to have the Mali prescale every frame to display resolution in fullscreen mode?

    Google translates it that way:
This behavior was in all releases) IMHO, this is primarily due to the scaling video, with software scaling. With the 720p, soc still manages, in the "in window" mode with 1080p - already a problem. When playing the corresponding permission in fullscreen, you don’t need to sign anything, and accordingly there are no problems. P.S. I saw a mention about puppyrus, but I can’t persistently fail to register for puppyrus, the activation letter just does not come to the gmail box)

Well I suspected it to be a scaling problem also, but should not the GPU take care of scaling? Or is it still not used?

Would be nice if we others could read it ;)

I don't have the equipment to check and answer. I can only assume by analogy with another model that I have (Tronsmart Vega S95 Telos). In Telos also has a SATA port. But it only works on Android. In Linux, SATA is not visible (need exact parameters for the activation of the port in the DTB). I tried to get this information from the manufacturer, but did not get it. From your model I see a similar situation -   have it only Android. Therefore, I think if the manufacturer does not provide the necessary information and sources, this SATA port will not work in Armbian (Linux). I will not disassemble the firmware and study reverse engineering. I won't waste my time making profits for those who don't want to provide support for their Linux hardware.

I see. Pity the manufactureres are not more forthcoming, but so is life, I guess...
