What is the purpose of the "network" line in /etc/network/interfaces?

Here it is specified as required but is not made clear how to obtain or set it. Specifically, how is it different from 'address' line?

I would guess it would usually be the same as the address but with 0 in the last place.

 

However, you probably don't want to be messing with that at all. network-manager

if the address is 1.2.3.4, and the netmask is 23 (255.255.254.0), then the network entry would be 1.2.2.0.  But according to your link, it's only needed in 2.0.x kernels, and we're way, WAY past that.
