How to switch OS install from one model to another? [OPI 4 -> OPI 4 lts]

I've installed the OPI 4 image awhile ago for my PI as that was the only one available. I've since installed just the kernel targeting this model. Is there a way I can ensure future kernel updates will look for the lts model?

Opi 4 and 4 LTS featuring different hardware, therefor individual firmware is necessary.

There's no way to change the device's target without a reinstall? Even if you compile the kernel and install the linux-firmware?

It may work but we cannot provide assistance since this has never been tested.
