[HC4] Difference between dedicated images and manual installation on top of minimal

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm curious, is there any qualitative difference between the dedicated application images and the Minimal image followed by a "normal" manual installation of the given application? For example OpenMediaVault (OMV) which comes with tailored installation instructions for Armbian. IOW, does the dedicated application image "only " take care of the OMV installation for you, or is there more to it which I might miss when installing OMV myself (on top of the minimal image)?

Thanks!

From Armbian perspective, application image is minimal + official way of installing things.

This is how we do it:

https://github.com/armbian/os/blob/main/userpatches/extensions/omv.sh

This is what they do:
https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers/installScript/blob/master/preinstall

https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers/installScript/blob/master/install

Some things in this long config are doubled, some deprecated, some makes no sense. I don't think we need to deal with all that. If you can access OMV via WEB interface and if you can upgrade it, that's about it.

Thanks for the quick response Igor.

  • Can you share some more details about the specifics things you mean? My aim is to be as compatible as possible, with Armbian and OMV.
  • This sounds like your clear recommendation is to use your dedicated application image as the optimal choice. Is that correct?

Thank you!
