error when setting root password

I know the edge kernel and trixie build is not supported, but it builds just fine, but during the first boot it fails when setting the root password. Any fix?

I enter new root password once, and enter return. Then I type the new password again, but before I hit enter, the command promt jumps to loggin. Then I'm stuck.

I guess the problem is that I'm using a simple 2 character password. It has been working fine until now. I'll try a long password next time.

Nope, still fails with a longer password.

I had the same problem when trying this directly on my Banana PI M5. But when I connected from my notebook via ssh everything worked fine and I could create the root and user password. Afterwards login was also possible directly on the machine.
