Problems running Armbian images containing a mainline (next, dev) Linux kernel

Hi everyone,

 

thanks at first for all the efforts to maintain downloadable Armbian images. However, I am currently unable to execute a mainline Linux kernel, packaged as a .deb, that comes from the Armbian repositories.

The current situation:

1. Successfully tried Xenial default image (Kernel 3.14). Upgraded to next (Kernel 4.13.10.7), C2 board won't boot.
2. Successfully tried Stretch next image (Kernel 4.13.5.7). Upgraded to next (Kernel 4.13.10.7), C2 board won't boot.
3. Tried Stretch next nightly (Kernel 4.13.10.7), C2 board won't boot.
4. Also tried the dev images from the beta repository, C2 board won't boot.

(Besides I am aware of the experimental character of the next and dev kernels. The board is an ordinary C2 one without any modifications and a decent power supply.)

 

My problem:

I need to compile the DRBD 9.x kernel module. To make things easy for me, I usually download the appropriate linux-headers-xyz package from the repository and compile the module.

With the default kernel (Kernel 3.14), this is possible. Because the current next Linux kernel (Kernel 4.13.10.7) won't boot, there is no chance for me to compile the kernel module mentioned before.

 

From my perspective, there are two options:

• In some way I can get the linux-headers-4.13.5.7.deb file for the only working mainline kernel (see 2.) or
• I manage to prepare a kernel source tree for 4.13.5.7 from the running kernel.

Odroid C2 next is broken since last 7 days because we moved to mainline u-boot and things will be (probably) ready when the kernel is moved to 4.14.y 

This is the only image with a modern kernel that works - and don't upgrade it.

You can try to check out our build script to the 23.10. ... and recompile the kernel. This is the best at this particular moment.

Compiling an image with the dev kernel should work.

In essence I can wait until the janitor jobs for the mainline kernel are done or I am going to set up an environment to compile a working Armbian image with a kernel version I want.

 

Hm, I guess I prefer the latter. Anyways, thanks again for the important informations.

After setting up the environment and compiling the dev-branch today, I can confirm this.

I just build dev kernel 4.14.0-rc7-odroidc2

with debian stretch and networking is working "fine" but DNS resolve don't work.

Any idea how to fix this??
