By the way i agree with @Netraam31 with the install is using edge and its no download of current install so for new users is one no go then the edge kernel is being broken if not having one one year old current image that is working OK.

Posted (edited)

I updated the armbian kernel without reading the thread and now I have my TV box down. How can I revert the kernel to the previous version without losing data? is that possible? thanks in advance

EDIT: OK I used .deb packages to force the old kernel version, everything is now OK. How can I upgrade the kernel to the pre-bug version? What is the appropriate version?

I was able to chroot into my existing installation after booting from the Armbian_22.05.0-trunk_Rk3318-box_jammy_current_5.15.35_xfce_desktop image from a usb stick, then i ran armbian-config to install the 6.6.32 kernel and freeze it without issue fwiw.

Partly a "parse error" for me (also not a native speaker so could be me), so not sure what you agree with 😉

I want to share an observation, and have a question linked to that. Not sure if this is the right place to ask, so please guide me to other threads if it would be more applicable there.

Observation / steps:

- installed one of the standard trunk images (bookworm/minimal), running a -current kernel

- go into armbian-config and switch to -edge kernel

- apt update, apt upgrade

- that would install newer -current kernel and seems to be booting from that instead of from -edge (or at least there are cases where this happens, probably related to availablility of new -current and no new -edge packages in the repo)

So it looks like armbian-config wouldn't remove the -current kernel package (even though I do see so messages during that process, indicating it would be removing the current kernel) and just installing the -edge kernel (+dtb) package alongside.

Question: could it be that the switch to -edge kernel would indeed not uninstall the -current kernel package but only remove some of the files in /boot, that would be placed back by an upgrade of the -current kernel package?

My current workaround to prevent going back to -current, and to prevent having an unbootable system, is to first remove the -current linux-image and linux-dtb packages, and then reinstalling the -edge linux-image and linux-dtb packages. But it seems a bit backwards to first go through armbian-config and then still doing this manually. Not sure if armbian-config does more than just install these two packages?

Sure it wasn't too complicated really, I can give you the gist of it from memory.

1. Burn Armbian_22.05.0-trunk_Rk3318-box_jammy_current_5.15.35_xfce_desktop to usb drive, plug into usb otg port to boot.

2. Go through basic install routine as usual until you get to armbian desktop

3. You should see your emmc drive as a desktop icon

4. open terminal

5. mount your emmc and important dirs, I don't think I had to mount boot dir ymmv

example mount /dev/mmcblk2p1 /mnt

mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc

mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/sys

mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev

mount -t devpts pts /mnt/dev/pts

chroot /mnt

6. Use armbian-config to install working kernel (6.6.32) as well as update bootloader.

7. Exit terminal and shut down system, once you no longer get a signal to display unplug usb drive and power cycle to verify bootup and you can freeze with armbian-config once booted up.

Great thanks @mrdotdotdot it was fixed in some minutes !!

Was already having Armbian 24.5.1 Jammy with Linux 6.1.63-current-rockchip64 (last found current image) on USB-stick so it was only booting and mounting and configuring and shutting down and connecting the Thread RCP and  HA is working well !!

And as you was writing dont forgetting freeze the kernel update or must redoing all more times.

Hello I also need support.

I have an x88 Pro 12 TV Box. I installed Armbian, but my wifi is not recognized. Also the clock display is black. I read a lot of X88 owners and what they did to bring both to work. But that is a miracle to me.... hopefully someon can help me, step by step.

This DTB enables all the ram speeds and the Mali 450 MP2 GPU is set so it can boost to 750 MHz well within safe operating voltages and the CPU is set to be able to scale to 1.5 GHz (also well-within safe operating voltages.

Tings Fixed :

Mali450-MP2 GPU Clock [added 600 / 700 / 750 MHZ OPP]
RK3318 CPU Clock [600 MHz to 1.5 GHz]
DDR RAM [All Enabled]

thanks to the support of Bing copilot in precise prompt
feel free to test now that i got everything nearly sorted out.

(WARNING!!! Large Heat Sink + 12V Fan Required)

The DTS File is also here if you want to tweak the settings you need.
place the File "rk3318.DTB" in /boot/dtb/rockchip/rk3318.dtb and reboot.

and point /boot/armbianEnv.txt so that rk3318-box.dtb is "rk3318.dtb"

rk3318.dtb rk3318.dts

Which ram speeds? are you aware that ddr scaling does not work on these tv boxes?

@pakos96 sorry 😔 , can't say exactly what version the server has built and when it did so... the patch is in mainline kernel armbian for more than one month now, 6.6.41 seems a bit old.

Posted (edited)

Unfortunately the 6.6.39 (Armbian 24.5.3 current) version seems to be the last version. After update I've the boot issue. I've rollbacked to 6.6.32 kernel version...

Who can we report it to?
:(

Unfreez i getting the kernel 6.6.39-current-rockchip64 (the bad one).

Updating i getting the kernel 6.6.47-current-rockchip64 (not tested then it look being one bad one).

Installing edge i getting kernel 6.10.6-edge-rockchip64 that booting but have not testing it for real if its working OK.

Armbian doesn't regularly release updated kernels to the stable channel, except once every three months with new releases.  If you switch to the nightly/beta channel in Armbian-config you should be able to access more current kernels at anytime.

= three month not working stable if not jumping to nightly.

Way not manually triggering one rebuild with latest commits for stable / current kernel of the RK33X8  so users can have working boxes without large problems ?

I knowing CSC but having one OK working stable / current is also important for this devices and edge / best is not the way for most users.

By the way the armbian-config scrip was working great getting old kernel back after getting changeroot mapping all OK.

Hi Jock,

Many thanks to your instructions and ROMs.
I have a H96 Max alike and it cannot boot from SD card, I managed to installed via MARKROM with this

https://users.armbian.com/jock/rk3318/Armbian_23.08.0-trunk_Rk3318-box_bookworm_edge_6.3.13_minimal.img.xz

However, after susscessfully installed, I reboot the box WITHOUT creating root passwords and normal user name/ passwords, too. Then, I ssh to the box via cmd on windows and it asked for user name and passwords

I typed ‘root’ and ‘root1234’ and, off course, I cannot login the box either via ssh nor the box via command line. I cannot put the box into Markrom anymore😭😭😭

Can you tell me what can I do to login or reset passwords?

Thank you

Minh Chau

I really don't understand where is the problem.

You claim you cannot login, but root and 1234 are the default username and password, and those have always been for ages.

You claim you cannot enter maskrom, but you should be perfectly able to boot from sdcard/USB either another armbian image or multitool to do maintenance or erase the eMMC and get back maskrom mode

Hello,

I’m having an issue with my MX10 TV box, which uses an RK3328 according to the PCB. I had to use Multitool to perform a chroot after a kernel update that failed.

I decided to reinstall the system cleanly. I booted into Multitool and erased the eMMC. Unfortunately, I think I used an image for RK322X. Since then, I have been unable to boot into Multitool from an SD card or USB drive (I’ve tried all available USB ports).

I’ve seen that there is a de-bricking method, but my eMMC chip does not have any visible pins for this operation. I also tried connecting my board to my PC via its debug port, but nothing appears in dmesg or lsusb. Are there any other possible solutions, or is my box permanently bricked?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to install Armbian on my X88 device but I'm running in a strange issue with my SD card and burning of the multitool.

Of course I did some research, but was not able to find a similar problem.

When I burn the multitool to the SD card, either with B.Etcher or Win32DiskI, I have the problem that the NTFS partition for the multitool is created with less than 400 MB. Most of the space on the SD card isn't allocated at all. Also most of the time, the multitool partition is not provided with a "drive letter". So, I'm not able to access it through the Explorer.

Based on this limitation, I'm of course not able to copy any image to the corresponding folder.

I already bought a new SD card, with the same results...

So, do you have any solution to deal with this issue?

Thanks,

Matt
