Not Able to Change Calendar Language

Hello all,

I hope this finds everyone well.

This is my first post and I’m not sure where to put it so, as per forum instructions, I’m dropping this here.

 

After the last update released on July 6th, 2023 that fixed a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issue (thank you), another issue developed. The calendar displays words and letters in a language that I’m not familiar with. It appears to be beautiful looking symbols, but unfortunately, they are meaningless to me.

 

I have attempted to correct this in every way I know but with no luck. The date and time format will change but the language will not. This hasn’t happened with the previous versions. I’m in the process of testing the other new variant releases.

 

I’m very grateful for the time and effort that creating this must take. I have included what I thought would be relevant. Feel free to ask for or offer anything that you think might also be helpful. My apologies if I’ve missed something. If your patient with me this time, I’ll get it right next time.

 

I have attached screen shots of what I’m seeing. Any advice or aid would be greatly appreciated. Also, I’m curious what language it is. I might want to learn more about it.

Run:

 

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

 

and choose your preferred language. Your current locale seems a variant of Yiddish

Thank you for the response @mitu.

 

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to make a difference. When I enter that command, it lists several locales being installed with “Done” after each, but I still can’t change the language. I’m wondering if there is an additional config file, or are files, I’m not aware of that aren’t being updated.

 

I can hunt for an answer there, but do you have any additional ideas?

 

Also, I was wondering if that was Yiddish. It reminds me of a toy a friend had when we were young. That made me smile. It also reminds me that I haven’t talked to them in a while. I’ll add a phone call to my “To Do” list.

Hello all.

I set up a bug report with armbianmonitor -u. It displayed, "Please post the URL in the the forum where you've been asked for." The link I was given took me to the beginner's forum, "Userspace issue: https://forum.armbian.com/forum/25-beginners/".

 

It stated that the data would be uploaded to:  https://paste.armbian.com/abajonowev

I had to select the -issue with apt option- but that doesn't quite describe the bug.

 

My apologies if this is the wrong place. I'm a noob hoping for some patience with my first go. Just let me know if I've messed up and I'll get it right next time. I'm looking into subscriptions, but I wanted to see how this goes first.

 

I have also uploaded a copy of the bug report output (abajonowev.txt ) below under "UPLOADED FILES".

 

The calendar language cannot be changed.

Still no luck.

Attached is a screen shot of the results from env | grep LANG

Everything other than the calendar is in English, but none of the methods or changing the calendar languages work.

Check the contents of /etc/default/locale - put there your desired language (en_US.UTF-8 should get you American English) and then reboot. Also, check out the Debian Local entry from https://wiki.debian.org/Locale, your question is not specific to Armbian.

I found workaround, sort of…

 

I flashed the variant multiple times with the same result. Finally, I decided to manually set the language and time zone. This kind of worked. It's now in the correct language and time zone. The problem is that even though the time zone is correct, it's 1 hour and 25 minutes fast and cannot be corrected. So, I have the option of a Yiddish calendar or a clock that's over an hour fast without the ability get the time any closer to actual.

 

It appears that allowing the system to automatically set that during initial setup results in the wrong language and wrong date / time format being locked and unchangeable in the calendar. This seems to only occur with the variant released July 6th, 2023.

 

It does appear to be a replicable bug, as I replicated it several times with the same result. It only works with manual setup.

But keep in mind that I only tried this with English/US locale en_US.UTF-8.

 

No actual solution as of yet.
