Hey all... Looking to put something a LOT more lightweight than RaspiOS (and not-modern-desktoppy at all, please) on my Pi4Bs. Found out about armbian from the Wikipedia page and downloaded the Jammy CLI image, but I can't get either gitlab or github to talk to me for downloading either of the recommended imagers; gitlab just gives me a blank page (no HTMl at all, per Firefox "view source") and github outright refuses connections. If it's important I do not have accounts on either system, and am loath to create same, although I could if necessary. I don't have Internet at home so I'm doing this from a Win10 PC at my public library; it's running the current Firefox (122.0). (My Pis will also live offline; I don't currently have a portable screen/mouse/KB to haul down here to do online installs, so I know I'll be stuck with only whatever's already in your images, for now anyway.) Can I just dd the image to a new/blank uSD card (Sandisk class 10, A1)? I'm fully capable of verifying the result, been admining UNIX systems since the 80s and Linux since 0.99pl6 or so... (I'll surely have more questions about making any resulting system work without internet connectivity, but first things first.)

I suggest looking over the overlays available; https://github.com/BPI-SINOVOIP/pi-linux/tree/pi-6.1-sunxi/arch/arm64/boot/dts/allwinner/overlay They may or maynot need to be edited as BSP VS MAINLINE usually isn't identical.

Hey Efe, Thank you for your help. Cannot believe that I downloaded the wrong Armbian image. With the Armbian_24.2.1_Orangepi5-plus_jammy_legacy_5.10.160_gnome-amazingfated_desktop.img.xz, I managed to boot into the setup CLI, although it is very "flashy". The monitor turns off and on again every 2 seconds. After setting up, it says "Starting desktop environment..", and goes black from there. The flashy CLI helped me figure out the reason. I am using ultra wide screen with 5120 x 1440 resolution. After changing to standard 2k resolution, I can boot into the desktop without any issue. Once I am in, I can change the resolution in settings to 5120 x 1440. I think the initial Linux configurations cannot understand weird aspect ratio. I tried 2k resolution with Joshua Riek image that I failed to boot before and it worked normally this time. Because Joshua Riek uses GUI first-boot screen, I went immediately to black screen instead of "flashy CLI".

@Markus Braun To be sure you could make one ext4 partition. "4 Boot from Flash..." is the right one indeed, after that it should ask to install/update the bootloader which you can agree and otherwise you can choose 7 install/update bootloader indeed.

Just download the file "rk3399-kobol-helios64.dtb-6.6.29-L2-hs400-opp" and copy it to /boot/dtb/rockchip/rk3399-kobol-helios64.dtb and reboot. It replaces the original rk3399-kobol-helios64.dtb which you may rename to rk3399-kobol-helios64.dtb-orig beforehand. It clearly enhances the stability of the system - but it cannot resolve any application errors.

Thanks yor your help @royk! As far as I know my storage is an nvme (at least it appears as /dev/nvme0n1) and not sata. Do I have to partition my nvme before using armbian-install? What option should I choose when using armbian-install? "4 Boot from MTD Flash - system on SATA, USB or NVMe" seems fine, doesn't it? And after that "7 Install/Update the bootloader on MTD Flash"?

Looking at the new BPI M4 zero to replace a RPI zero. The official build listed does not have gpio turned or maybe just not built into the kernel. If I download the image from the BPI website it has it but it based on bullseye and the image is broke. I built my own image but still no go so I am not sure what is wrong. I have built images for other boards and projects with success so that's not the problem. I have a 3.5" TFT touch screen and some relays that I need to run along with a sensor.

Would love to see a Radxa Rock 5B version

Hi, the device uses the PINs only, but not the spi protocol. It talks directly so the SX1278 via the PINs. This works in RaspberryPi standard images from scratch without any change (only disabling SPI). I don't know what you mean with "dtbo". I'm not a developer, only a user. I think this will be the final update. One thing I now know for sure: it would've been easier to reinstall. But I did it my way, learned a bunch of things, broke and restored things, it was kinda fun to take my "old" server for a ride. Had to do much more upgrades, some broke the network, some broke libcrypt which broke ssh and sudo, but in the end I have a working system and software running on it is relatively up-to-date, debian bookworm edition.

Armbian doesn't support TV boxes. Of the three major cpu families alwinner has the least support (practically no activity on alwinner). You can look at other threads in this forum discussing the h616.
