That's not the problem, the problem is the extra workload in modifying (and then maintaining) whatever parts of Armbian to support the 2 different init systems (as c0rnelius already went into some detail about).

And we barely have the resources to do what we do already...

Having said that, if it is something you feel strongly enough about, have at it.  But as c0rnelius pointed out, you would probably have your work cut out for you.

Although this is doable. It would be a fairly large undertaking.  Any services and custom services currently used, would need a sysvinit equivalent. Then there is the question, would this also need to be integrated into armbian-config?  Probably, yes. Would all features in armbian-config even be supported in Devuan? I seriously doubt it. Also depending on how debs specific to Armbian are currently put together and the depends they may or may not have, those would also need to be modified.

Plus it would need to be extensively tested. I have found some scripts I run that are linked to services sometimes need modification when using them on Devuan.

For a lot of boards though, on a basic level. It could be done.

Upgrade to what newer version?  A userspace version (i.e. ubuntu focal to ubuntu jammy) or a kernel upgrade (i.e. 23.02 based armbian kernel to 23.05 armbian kernel)?
For userspace it is recommeded to do an install, as upgrades are not tested (but I just did a focal to jammy upgrade last night and they generally do work).
For the kernel, you can just do apt update/upgrades to continue following the builds over time (assuming you don't have your kernel frozen in armbian-config).

FYI. Bullseye does not add or remove anything related to hardware on Armbian Linux. If you build Bullseye / Jammy / Focal / whatever image today with our build tools https://github.com/armbian/build your WiFi will also work.

Just additional measure to divide kernel and user land packages update. If you want to update kernel packages go to armbian-config -> system -> unfreeze (freeze back after) ... do update & upgrade.

freezr reacted to Werner in Which are the differences between Bullseye CLI and Minimal?
Standard comes with all standard tool to be ready to do most common tasks oob.
Minimal comes, as the name implies, with a bare minimum of packages to get a somehow running system.
You can check the build repository on github for package lists.

I choose to move away from repository under our control to PPA simply because I hardly find time to see my kids and nobody else care ... until its changed on worse. If we as a community (I can fix this for myself this way or another) want to have all those segments under better control, no PPA involved, automated testing of this feature and similar ... this project need help on a daily basis. I am afraid not many other options.

Upgrade won't work atm but if you build a clean image, ZFS will build. Also if you know how to add this by hand.

    Hi folks,

this is my first thread here, I just recently came aboard since I found that Armbian is the better solution for my Odroi-HC4 therefore I won't insist on checking for info and solution on the Odroid Forum.

I am not very satisfied with Hardkernel, they produce excellent board with very poor OS support, looks like such critical aspect is left on the shoulder of a couple of great dudes but is not same as having a community behind; also board as the RPI demonstrated that a great OS support is better than having the most powerful hardware, is the same lesson learned by Rock64 even though I won't user Manjaro not even under torture... 😜

Armbian might a great asset for Hardkernel, never understood why they are so reticent... 🤷‍♂️

    Thanks!

From a quick look the only major difference I can see is the memory usage where top includes the zram in used where as htop does not.

It always helps to see full logs to understand. Even that doesn't tell everything, but helps. Here are mine: http://ix.io/3ZDX

I have update mine and it went well. Even ZFS modules has successfully recompiled upon kernel change:

Congratulations. Armbian is adedd to the distrowatch list.

Already 2 years ago I submitted you to the list but then they refused to listen to me, despite the fact that RaspbianOS was placed a long time ago.
I think that this will further influence the popularity of the venture.
