Since you didn't tell us which build nor which hardware you are using ... nobody can help you. (logs with armbianmonitor -u)

There used to be problems in some previous versions with this, so consider using latest build or at least upgrade there. Getting from this semi working image will be hard.

Are you sure it installed the desktop? Was internet connected? If not it'll just skip everything.
You can try with
startx
and see if it boots into desktop.
If so then probably there's a problem with the display manager. So try to install "sudo apt install lightdm".

It was definitely connected to the internet Nico - and apt install lightdm states that the latest is already installed

Since you didn't provide the most important info armbianmonitor -u (to see relevant data), now for the 3rd time, you are only wasting our time. You use this free software on your own risk and support is our personal cost. After R&D ...

In case you didn't update to this before installing it could be our bug. In any case, images from the download section are fixed. Installing desktop must work there. If not, bug will be accepted and fixed when we find time.

Well, lightdm is installed in this process. You need to have one for easy operations. You can try uninstalling ... update ... try again.
