Varun Pilankar
I’m helping my friend set up Helios64 with OpenMediaVault as a media server. We’d manage to set it up as per your documentation mentioned on your wiki page but are stuck on SD-Card to eMMC migration. As after migrating with no error so far we’re still unable to boot the system without the SD-Card in Helios64. We still couldn’t figure out what could be the problem? Can you guys help?
barnumbirr
I've been running into the same issue for about a week or two, haven't had the time to dig into it though. armbian-config says the "Boot from eMMC - System on eMMC" step went fine but device won't boot after that. Haven't hooked a serial cable to it to see where it fails.
gprovost
I'm unable to reproduce the issue. Just tried a fresh install of Armbian Buster 20.11.4 on microSD card then used armbian-config to install boot and system on eMMC (option 2)... and it works as expected. What does the serial console output when you boot the system ? We need to see where your system stops. When did you do the migration SD card to eMMC, before or after installing OMV ?
chango
I seem to have a very similar issue, although I'm not using OMV. Fresh Debian installation (Armbian_20.11.4_Helios64_buster_current_5.9.14.img.xz) on MicroSD card, followed by update/upgrade, then tried to move to eMMC using the armbian-config menus (option 2). After a shutdown, removed MicroSD, but system refuses to boot. Replacing MicroSD card allows it to boot successfully again. Following sucessfully restarting with MicroSD in place, this is lsblk output: NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT sda 8:0 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sda1 8:1 0 3.7T 0 part sdb 8:16 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sdb1 8:17 0 3.7T 0 part sdc 8:32 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sdc1 8:33 0 3.7T 0 part sdd 8:48 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sdd1 8:49 0 3.7T 0 part sde 8:64 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sde1 8:65 0 3.7T 0 part mmcblk0 179:0 0 29.7G 0 disk └─mmcblk0p1 179:1 0 29.4G 0 part / zram0 251:0 0 50M 0 disk /var/log zram1 251:1 0 1.9G 0 disk [SWAP] and this is output from dmesg | grep mmc: [ 2.887657] dwmmc_rockchip fe320000.mmc: IDMAC supports 32-bit address mode. aprayoga
@chango yes, it seems something wrong with the on-board eMMC. You shouldn't be able to move to eMMC if it wasn't detected. Could you attach serial console output since power on? Edited January 5, 2021 by aprayoga
chango
@aprayoga Unfortunately I have no success with obtaining serial output. I've tried using both my MacBook Pro laptop and Manjaro desktop, and neither produces any serial output. The tty never shows up when connected to the Manjaro box, and only sometimes shows up on the MBP (/dev/tty.usbserial-DT03OFSJ), but then using screen to that device produces no output (I did initial setup via ssh instead). Is any of this useful diagnostic info stored anywhere else? Curiously the eMMC has shown up on some subsequent boots, with the following output in dmesg | grep mmc: [ 2.890213] dwmmc_rockchip fe320000.mmc: IDMAC supports 32-bit address mode. Opts: commit=600,errors=remount-ro On seeing this I tried again to go through the steps to transfer the system to eMMC, but was then surprised to see the HDDs thrashing. Seems the installer requires/expects all mounts to be in /mnt/, but I have a ZFS pool mounted by its default off /poolname instead. After moving the pool mountpoint I retried the install-to-eMMC process, which went fast & smoothly (apparently), but then on powering onwithout the SD card I got the familiar static System LED, and un-pingable IP (MAC address is pre-assigned to an IP by router). Replacing the SD card allows booting again. So it seems there's some issue with the transfer/boot process with eMMC, and with serial connection. Sometimes eMMC shows up, sometimes not. Serial connection never works. While I understand this is a tinkerers' device in many respects, I would also expect the basic hardware to both function and be tested. Any possible advice on which way to proceed with this? Edited January 5, 2021 by chango typo

Ran into the exact same issue. As I had no luck with connecting my MacBook Air via Serial Console, I did it headless with the SD Card. After copying the boot partition from SD to the eMMC, it booted once without an issue. After trying to install OMV via softy it just does not boot anymore. I will be back on the SD Card and unwilling to touch that procedure again if it is not flawless.
chango
@bunducafe After following up with the Kobol support team via email on this, I tried direct installation to eMMC via USB-C cable, but that produced the same results. It ended up with me sending it back for a replacement, which their team handled fast and smoothly to their credit, and my replacement board works well as expected, and is now running 24/7 from eMMC. I suggest persisting to trying to find a way to connect via the USB-C serial console, as this will give you sufficient info to see what may be happening and how to proceed. For me I had to cut back the USB-C cable sheathing about 1.5-2mm or so to get a snug fit in the socket, and I also had the benefit of having another computer with Linux on to help diagnose.
bunducafe
Hm, is there a possibilty that the old bootloader name is again the used in the newer kernels? I can get it working with the workaround in the troubleshooting section: Zitat sudo mkdir -p /mnt/system sudo mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/system sudo ln -sf rk3399-kobol-helios64.dtb /mnt/system/boot/dtb/rockchip/rk3399-helios64.dtb sudo umount /mnt/system sudo poweroff Then the machine boots without any issues. Zitat After boot successfully to eMMC, we strongly suggest to update the bootloader using armbian-config. Here I am unsure what I have to do? Excersise the same procedure again - e.g. in armbian-config: Select Boot from eMMC - system on eMMC ? Then I do fear that it won't boot as expected as I have done this several times now...
bunducafe
vor 2 Stunden schrieb chango: @bunducafe After following up with the Kobol support team via email on this, I tried direct installation to eMMC via USB-C cable, but that produced the same results. Hm, I guess I have to go the same route as I am unable to boot again with emmc. Also in the boot settings I only have two points left I can chose. So will have to contact the support team directly I suppose.
bunducafe
After I could not boot at all tonight, I am somewhat puzzled what I should do. There is a possibility that the SDcard just went dead but neither could I boot from the eMMC. After several reboots with a freshly installed SD the helios is booting up again but of course all the setup is lost. Bottom line: Is there a way to easily delete the emmc partition and tell the helios64 to boot from SD card immediately? And if so: How ;) I cannot get it done via the armbian-config unfortunately.

Unfortunately I cannot get the console working with neither MacBook nor iMac. It's really frustrating. Beyond that: I shortened the P10 jumper in order to boot from SD card, yet, it does not boot. No flashing light, just the steady blue one, no heartbeat. So, what else am I supposed to try to get the Helios64 boot again from SD card? Funnily I did not change anything from the last time, I just switched the Helios off while I was away...
bunducafe
At least I could get it booted again. I did a clean install onto a fresh SD card with the latest Armbian-Image kernel 5.10. It did boot up but of course I am losing all my configs with OpenMediavault etc. That's the output of the dmesg, there seems something wrong with both mmc and sd. How can I solve that issue in order to get a system that works and where I can then do all the config with OMV and after that reboot / shutdown and boot again...?! bunducafe
Hi folks, just a heads up in this thread (maybe related to others experiencing boot issues with Helios64 and OMV5): If you use the setup: OMV5, Multiple Hdds, LUKS encryption + UnionFS then it is very likely that the machine does not come up instead is booting into revocery mode. That's because it cannot find any mountpoints because of LUKS. In order to get the helios booting again you have to add a "nofail" into the mergerfs option. Unfortunately the merferfs pool does not getting mounted automatically once you decrypted the hdds within LUKS Plugin. That's a bit of a nuisance but it is bearable if you do not boot your machine every day. In my case I had to remove the nofail, the mergerfs did mount immediately and then I did put the nofail in again. There might be a more elegant possibility but at least it is a remedy to get the helios working again. Jump over to the OMV-forums and do a search for LUKS + UnionFS + nofail and you find several threads about that issue. I have no idea if it is better to swith to the merferfsfolder plugin because I have no knowledge so far if I just can change the plugins without any errors.
hartraft
Thanks for this, I'll try on my end too. I think many people follow the "perfect media server" guides which pretty much have this setup
