marcopete87 Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Good morning all! I started with sbc when first Raspberry pi appeared (256MB of ram!), now i bought an Asus Thinkerboard to use with Zoneminder as server in an low power cluster video-surveillance system (at my home). OS: Armbian 5.30 Ubuntu Xenial next 4.11.4 from ufficial torrent. The board works just fine, except frequent hangs after 5-10 minutes of use. I tried with different power supplies on micro usb port (2 of raspberry pi, 2.5A@5.1V and an external battery phone charger, i have also connected an 1x1000µF capacitor across gpio 5vcc terminals and ground); measured voltage seems to be ok. The system doesn't have any usb device attacked and system boots into terminal mode. Cpu governor is set to stay between 1.1GHz and 1.5GHz, temperature is 50-70°C and thermal throttling engage rarely (i have also changed thermal paste with an better quality). I tried checking SD and Power supply, but i don't have any clue about this issue. htop is saying about 50% cpu, 2.x system load After some minutes, system simply stop to respond: lan goes down and, when logged into local terminal session, i can only press enter (everything else won't work). Sd activity (green led, i suppose) stay on, yellow led goes off (normally, it blinks). Does anyone have any idea about this issue? Thanks!

Hi there, This sounds like a power supply issue/It's drawing too much power, I use a 5V3A on my Tinkerboard to avoid this. I haven't tested whether or not the PSU is able to provide the advertised 3A yet, I'm in the process of testing that out today, I'll edit/come back & let you know of my results. The "Before reporting problems with your board running Armbian, check the following:" above has some helpful info too.
TonyMac32 Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Have you monitored the voltage at the 5V gpio pins? Or at the USB connector? I use a 5.25 volt supply since even without any power-hungy peripherals my board consumes 0.5 to 2.2 Amps. Depending on load, of course. I would recommend upgrading to at least a kernel 4.12 image if you need Mainline. There have been a collection of various improvements to the hardware support since 4.11, which is also an eol kernel (no more updates from kernel.org). As to your specific issues, I'd say we revisit after the upgrade.
TonyMac32 Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 3 minutes ago, mpmc said: I use a 5V3A on my Tinkerboard Even before going to 3A I would recommend finding a 5.25 V supply. 2.5A should be enough, as repeated again and again the microUSB is only rated by specification for 1.8A continuous. I would not assume any board uses a "better than minimum spec" connector.
marcopete87 Posted September 17, 2017 Author Posted September 17, 2017 Ok, thank you! Now it's quite late, but i'm going to monitor voltage on 5Vcc GPIO pins. I'm going also to upgrade kernel version. However, if is power supply, why every power supply thinkerboard after a while? I noticed, setting lower frequency limit in cpu governor that setting more than 600MHz make this board more stable... (edit 1): voltage on vcc pin on gpio is 5.11-5.14v under load at 1.5GHz, after 2 minutes, it stabilizes on 5.2V and then, drop to 5.17 when board hangs.
TonyMac32 Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 The supply has to always be considered suspect on any of these boards that power their elephant CPU through a small straw. See my post within the length "Tinkerboard" thread: That said, 4.11 was prone to HDMI dropouts, had no WLAN support, and had an incomplete device tree/potentially incorrect thermal trip points. (I updated as the Asus/Rockchip team updated.) There have been a considerable list of improvements in driver support since.
marcopete87 Posted September 17, 2017 Author Posted September 17, 2017 Thank you very much for support! Tomorrow i'll cut the micro usb cable to power via GPIO (with misc filter capacitors). Now, i'm searching about upgrade Armbian kernel. (10.10 am update) i cut micro usb connector, i'm using GPIO connector for power. Voltage is between 5.30V and 5.29V (10.45 am update) no differences, board continue to hang...
marcopete87 Posted September 18, 2017 Author Posted September 18, 2017 Update: i upgraded kernel getting latest package from https://apt.armbian.com/pool/main/l/linux-4.12.0-rockchip/ and running dpkg -i *.deb now, i'll let this run for a while, meanwhile i'm going to buy a new micro sd card, i'll test it in case of hangs. (i'll do tomorrow) p.s. i noticed shutdown -r now command doesn't reboot, but seems to shutdown without reboot option, may be an help for find the solution on my issue? updated kernel, after 30 minutes, it freezes (again).
TonyMac32 Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 Hmmmmm, I'll set a mine up and just monitor it to see.
TonyMac32 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 @marcopete87 I just tried that, lost wireless functionality and reboot. I'm assuming kernel modules are the issue. Now letting a fresh install run to see if I get any hangs [edit] Kernel 4.13.2
marcopete87 Posted September 19, 2017 Author Posted September 19, 2017 Hi, as usual i thank you for support. I mapped 1.25GB of ram as /dev/shm for data shares, swap is 128MB, 0% used (because swappiness is 0) First, i was thinking about thermal issues, but it doesn't seems to be the problem (board hangs also where placed over an thermal pad with generous heatsink). Last armbianmonitor -m print (before hanging) was: Quote 09:17:41: 1200MHz 11.95 61% 5% 37% 1% 15% 1% 46.4°C 11.95 of load is very strange as normal is near 2. I noticed board hangs faster as cpu workload increase. update: changed sd card with a new Samsung MB-MG16EA/EU, nothing solved. I'm writing an new image to sd card, maybe system corrupted? update2: shutdown -r now doesn't reboot. update3: all configured as original, testing new installation (img without desktop environment) for log analysis: http://sprunge.us/FJib
TonyMac32 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 @Igor all archive images for Tinker appear to be 5.30 on dl.armbian.com/tinkerboard. @marcopete87 please try a nightly image, they all have the newer kernel/device tree.
Igor Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Just now, TonyMac32 said: @Igor all archive images for Tinker appear to be 5.30 on dl.armbian.com/tinkerboard. That is correct. Only nightly images were updated. Update others too?
TonyMac32 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Yes, some issues have been resolved since that one came out, it would be best not to keep them in circulation. First though, I'd like to see if the nightly resolves his issue and do some testing myself. The 4.12.y builds were all very stable, I don't know the 4.13 as well.
marcopete87 Posted September 19, 2017 Author Posted September 19, 2017 Ok, thank you all, i'll try as soon as possible. update: now, i'm running ARMBIAN 5.32.170920 nightly Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS 4.13.0-rockchip reboot is fixed. update2: now, it seems more stable, but after 1 hour, it hangs again (red led stays on, sometimes also green, yellow stop to pulse). I tried updating board firmware, i'll let you know about results...
TonyMac32 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 That is strange. I've had my board running 24 hours now with no hang, now it is with minimum load I realize. I'll give it something to do and see if it gets better or worse.
TonyMac32 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I just apt upgrade'd my fresh 4.13 Dev install and I wound up with a 4.11 kernel, so wifi and reboot broken. @Igor, do you know what would cause that?
Igor Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 DEV is 4.14.rc1 and it's broken for Rockchip at this moment. If you were using a stable repository than regression is possible.
marcopete87 Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 Update: using only one camera is STABLE. When i start recording on 2+ cameras, hangs. Today i'll try reduce shm size and, eventually, using an fan over tinkerboard.

Igor Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Some measurements: PSU 3.2A, powered via GPIO (MiQi), kernel 4.13.2 http://sprunge.us/VVNZ Voltage at PSU = 5.05V (idle or full), at board 4.95 - 4.75V (at full load), power draw spikes max. 2.2A, idle 0.7A PSU limited to exactly 2.00A. Sometimes crash already at boot time but certainly at starting stress test ... Moved PSU back to 3.2A and powering via 30cm long quality micro USB cable with only two thick leads. I don't have the option to plug here some other cables. In a short test, I could not crash the board but find out that it's easy to get to the power off due to high temperature. At least with my MiQi which has some 3rd party badly glued heatsink. marcopete87 Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 I was thinking about thermal protection, but measured temperatures (and with not-so-bad infrared thermometer) are on 50-60°C in the hottest part of board. Now, i run test on forced cooled case, same results, so temperature maybe not an cause of this behaviour. I noticed, prior to system crash, system slow down to hell (and declared cpu frequency doesn't change at all), maybe something about massive interrupts or process queue issues?
Tido Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) I have started my "transmission-board" with: Armbian_5.32.170724_Tinkerboard_Ubuntu_xenial_next_4.12.3_desktop.img and did all upgrades as offered currently at: Linux tinkerboard 4.13.2-rockchip #43 SMP PREEMPT Sun Sep 17 I sometimes remove the SDcard to copy the files to other computers - and on the next reboot it will start (red light) and die. I unplug, power it again and it runs. I use this IKEA PSU and I am not sure if it matters on which of the 3 port I power it or not. But when it runs, it works like a charm Little load I have to admit: System load: 0.03 0.24 0.24 Up time: 10 min - no cooler attached - chip feels around 50°C when I touch it. It didn't make sense to me to build something up below 4.12.3 because the reboot was not working before. Edited September 20, 2017 by Tido temperature
marcopete87 Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 @Tido, hot removing/plugging sd card is the best way to get corrupted filesystem. with another pc, check filesystem.
TonyMac32 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 @Igor I'll look at the thermals, mine hit 74 with my large heat sink (it should be throttling at 70), so I'm going to guess there may have been more than just the cooling nodes changed in 4.13, I didn't check the polling speed., For example.
TonyMac32 Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 Cancelling this test because there are others at the moment as well... :-/ root@tinkerboard:~# uptime 03:20:38 up 1 day, 54 min, 1 user, load average: 2.53, 2.14, 1.91 root@tinkerboard:~# uname -a Linux tinkerboard 4.12.0-rockchip #9 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jun 23 20:40:07 CEST 2017 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux Well, it didn't say that was the kernel when I updated. so I guess I'll be repeating this...
